Re: L'Brainstorming
So after some googling it seems this weeks title (or prompt ) is the name of a high end beauty shop. Huh? Does anyone get what this is about?

I'm pretty sure it's (Occitane) a French province; the "L'"suggests femininity so perhaps a song about a gal from Occitane...or about outrageously overpriced and unnecessary beauty products! Fun

It's also a motorway apparently. But I've already got a bit of ridiculousness whipped up based on the high end beauty shop angle ... kind of.

Re: L'Brainstorming
It's about the swamping of cultural and historical information on the Internet when a commercial product roars by. I've got the chorus already: "Well if you think the Internet's worth a damn, Just you go and search for L'Occitane."

Re: L'Brainstorming
Just because it's not always clear on the Internet, let me say that prompt comment was a joke
Looks like there's one of these beauty shops here in Boston, so I guess I could go do some field research. Haha. Seeing as I barely managed to get something into Circle of Titles, I wouldn't count on it.

Just because it's not always clear on the internet, let me just guess that JB's post was probably also a joke.

l'Occitane is just obscure enough to open up a wide range of possible lyrical scenarios. At first I thought "oh geez!", but now I see the light. Who knew?

Re: L'Brainstorming
If I'm not mistaken, it's lox-i-TENNE.
But French pronunciation is weird about stressed syllables.

Re: L'Brainstorming
I found a video on YouTube with the founder of the store pronouncing it "lox-ee-Tan". Good thing, cause my one year of French class was leading me astray.

Re: L'Brainstorming
I would say "lox-i tahn"
but I have had my schoolboy French shot down in flames by Noah and J$ in the past - so I am a bad source.
But I have written 2 songs in (bad) French previously* - so this is tempting

Re: L'Brainstorming
I would defer to people who actually speak the language (or perhaps the corporate board of the beauty supply store), but I'm pretty sure the pronunciation depends on gender. For a feminine, as implied by the E at the end of the noun, the last syllable would be closer to "ten" (though I notate it as "tenne," because I feel like French pronunciation lingers of syllables like that for a split-second longer than we would in English). If it were masculine, that last syllable would be "tan," though there's no way in English to properly write the way the French voice snarls up on that vowel sound and almost completely loses the N at the end.
Take note, then, whether you're composing about a person from the "Land of Oc" or whether you're actually writing about beauty products.

Re: L'Brainstorming
Has anybody here heard of Google? It's this really cool web site where you can find out how to pronounce things. You just type "pronunciation l'Occitane" or whatever and it gives you all kinds of answers. I haven't figured out what else it does yet. . .
There's actually a video about this, if you're interested in the opinions of people in New York City.

Exactly what I found when searching this topic as I had no idea how to pronounce it... lox-ee-tahn is what I've settled on for my song based on that videoAJOwens wrote:There's actually a video about this, if you're interested in the opinions of people in New York City.
