Please, please, please, don't give into your gut instinct and do cod reggae. Espcially not comedy cod reggae. Anyone who does a 'comedy' Jamaican accent will be summarily barred from music-making forever. Reggae and dub are easy to do badly, next to impossible to do well, and the thought of me wading through a dozen songs and accusing everyone of being a musical racist does not appeal much. To anyone.

(secretly I'm just clearing the field so I can take a swing at it myself :) )

I am not using a Jamaican accent, but I am using Jamaican inspired music. Like I said, I'm a video game music remixer, so I have to stick to what I know. Super Adventure Island II has some GREAT music in this theme.

I asked everyone I know to call me "Winston" for the last week. A very popular name in Jamaica.

Thematically, everything came together nicely for Klownhole with this title.

I don't remember them, actually. I'll have to look them up. I was into Op Ivy, Voodoo Glow skulls, The Skankin' Pickle, The Specials, Madness, etc.. Fun times way back when...

we try to sell ours every time we do grocery store or wal-mart parking lots,I hold her up in the air and scream (baby for sale), most people don't want one. Guess we're stuck with her. She fits in pretty good here anyway.

Wow, I must be getting old. It was just pointed out to me that the song I wrote is "I hope you have a good time in Jamaica" — which is close but not the title. Good thing I only do a couple songs a year.
Punk rock is for children. Grab a six-pack at Half-a-Dozen Records.

Bummer. The Slickitude entry this time around sounds real good to me, you've earned my vote. Dig the attitude, vocals, slap-back reverb and great backing vox. Tasty.

What, are you one of those people who thinks that the title needs to show up in the song verbatim? I really don't get where that pernicious idea comes from.

Short answer: The "I'm crazy" method. Long answer below. Don't read if you don't wanna :)

I start with the idea, then I consult my video game music library to find something that fits based on games I have played. (If I can't find anything there, I probably won't submit a fight.) Then, I write lyrics. I usually keep to a 3/4 or 4/4 beat structure, and I try not to go faster than my mouth can handle. (My Banshee track was 110 BPM, and I think that was my limit.) Then, after the lyrics are written, I remix the track to the distinct verse/chorus lengths and BPM and practice the rhymes. This usually causes rewriting to make the structure fit the song.

Then comes the fun part. I use my metronome through my headphones in my sound studio (read: rigging with sound absorbing blankets and my microphone soundboard) and I rhyme into the mic with only the tempo in my ears. It prevents me from having to stop and rewind over and over again when I get tongue tied. After I have my vocal waveforms, I blend them into the mastered track a verse at a time or a line at a time, whatever it needs.

That's me!
