Who wants to collab with the the DeepOrb AI?

Post by claytantor »

Hey songfighters,

If you have participated in a fight in the last two weeks you may have noticed some different sounding pieces being submitted.

Last week: Take It Outside - Deep Orb Whisky - http://www.songfight.org/music/take_it_ ... ky_tio.mp3
This week: I Am Very Busy - Deep Orb Steel - http://www.songfight.org/music/i_am_ver ... l_iavb.mp3

These songs were generated using home grown RNN Based learning techniques as described here https://towardsdatascience.com/how-to-g ... 786834d4c5

Right now there are three models trained.

1. Deep Orb Whisky - Training from over 200 public domain midi country, western and bluegrass songs. Lyric generation from public domain cowboy poetry from 1891-1954
2. Deep Orb Steel - Training from over 170 public domain metal, speedmetal and dark metal songs. Lyric generation from public domain gothic poetry including Poe, and HP Lovecraft
3. Deep Orb Sparkle - Training from over 290 public domain pop, electro, and EDM songs. Lyric generation from public domain young adult poetry from 1945-2000

How does a collab work?

In order to maintain the spirit of the collab I am proposing some basic rules (with artistic license)...
  • Humans choose the model Whisky, Steel or Sparkle
  • Humans receive midi generated by DeepOrb. This is a multitrack "song"
  • Humans can cut, copy, paste anything down to the unit of one measure for AI-generated tracks. Strange outlier notes can be deleted but an effort to retain the vast majority of the measure should be made.
  • Humans can produce up to 50% of the measures of the song. That might mean accompanying tracks, it may mean inserting MIDI in an AI generated track.
  • Humans can assign any instrument or effect they wish to any track.
  • Humans may choose to sing or can have MP3 lyrics generated for them, but should try to use artistic licence with the generated text to make an interesting set of lyrics with at least 50% of lyrics coming from the AI.
Import Rights Info:
* All collaborations become public domain and will be put in song play rotation with attribution on https://deeporb.net

I have questions.

Will the vocal melody be MIDI as well, or will the human provide it?

Can the human replace a MIDI instrumental track with one played by a human (maintaining the notes as much as is physically possible on the instrument)?

How much song structure should be kept? Is it acceptable for the human to re-organize things into a verse/chorus/bridge arrangement?

Maybe not this week, but I'm TOTALLY down and would love to make beautiful, strange music with you. But really only deep orb steel. Because it needs to be so br00tal we come in last.

I'd be interested in giving it a go, in a couple weeks.

At this rate we're almost in sidefight territory...

I like that idea. Would we all be given the same output and see who can make the best song out of it? Or does each of us get our own uniquely generated output?

I would prefer the latter -- though since we have three models to choose from it may not matter?

Do the human noises have to be actual singing? I have other options.

Deep orb can generate "spoken word" type singing that you can put effects on if you want, or you can sing the lyrics. At least 50% of the lyrics generated should be deep orb.

Yes. As long as 50% of all notes across all tracks are deep orb.

You can re-arrange any way you would like as long as the building block is a measure and the note count is at least 50% generated by deep orb.

Just think of it as a collaborator who is being a nerd diva about the numerical content collab, not necc the artistic, being 50% or more.

Would people like me to make some files available here as an example? I can put the files up on S3 and make them public... Then talk through it.

Ok here we go:

This is the type of "song" created, this is what was created for I am Very Busy
https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/deep ... -Metal.mid

This is the "lyrics" created in text form...
https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/deep ... y_busy.txt

And all the generated voice files...
https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/deep ... er_mag.wav
https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/deep ... er_mag.wav
https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/deep ... er_mag.wav
https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/deep ... er_mag.wav

I would deliver this, as a unique bundle for every song fighter...

I'm tempted to do this. Right now I can't record instruments but my voice works fine.

Start with the next title? Sidefight so as not to flood the main fight?

I didn't even think of the idea of doing this in the main fight. Admittedly I'd giggle hard to see a tracklist consisting of "Deep Orb Sock" "Deep Orb Phleb" "Deep Orb Kasper" "Deep Orb Cash"

Don't use anything that was made prior to the announcement of the title of a fight, for a fight. This seems like it should be a side fight.

Of course not! This would be way better as a sidefight
