Race to the Bottom

Post by king_arthur »

Race to the Bottom / King Arthur
(as performed by the King Arthur Trio)

A light bulb came on / over his head
He ran to the lab / and as he went he said
"When I emerge / at some future date
I'll have a thing / and that thing will be great."

And just when his money / was almost gone
He flipped a switch / and a bulb switched on
It was curly and twisty / it came on slow
But it was efficient / and whiter than snow.

It was a race to the bottom of the lake of his mind
He went for a swim to see what he could find.
He went for a swim to see what he could find
In a race to the bottom of the lake of his mind.

Now this scientist worked / on a corporate team
So they owned the patents / on all of his dreams
The first bulbs sold / in the ten dollar range
But Marketing Man said / that's got to change.

Fast, cheap, better / choose any two
Make 'em in China / yeah, that's what we'll do.
Fill 'em with mercury / to soften the glare
Label it "green" / and nobody will care.

It was a race to the bottom of the ladder of cost
Some rungs got skipped and some things got lost.
Some rungs got skipped and some things got lost.
In the race to the bottom of the ladder of cost.

(instrumental half-verse)

Now they're selling like crazy / at the lower price
They're filled with hazmat / and they'll damage your eyes
You're not s'posed to toss 'em / in the garbage bin
But cheap fails fast / I guess you can't win.

It was a race to the bottom; now here we stand
Nothing turned out the way the scientist planned.
This race to the bottom, it's gotta stop
You can't race to the bottom and come out on top.

(repeat)

RACE TO THE BOTTOM TOBY ROKTOT
jACK SAID, I'VE GOT A SECRET, ON TOP OF THE HILL,
I CAN TAKE YOU THERE, GRAB A BUCKET, WE CAN FILL,
WE CAN RACE DOWN, BET I GET THERE, BEFORE YOU, do
BE QUIET, DON'T WANNA WAKE UP YOU KNOW WHO....

WHERE WE GOING SHE ASKED , AS WE SKIPPED AWAY
JUST UP THE HILL FOR SOME WATER, BE GONE ALL DAY
WAIT A MINUTE, LET ME GRAB MY COAT, IT'II BE COLD UP THERE
WINTER'S COMIN' EARLY THIS YEAR...

OFF WE GO ON A ROLL, COOL FALL BREEZE,
BLOWIN' UP THE HILL
JACK TAKES HIS TIME, LOOKIN' FINE
FLASHES A LITTLE BITTY SMILE, AT JILL
WHERE'D SUMMER GO, IT'S GETTIN' COLD, CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S AUTUMN
JILL SAYS...WANNA RACE TO THE BOTTOM

SUN'S SETTIN' LOW IN A BUTTERMILK SKY
JILL TAKES MY HAND, MAYBE YOU CAN BE MY GUY
DON'T LEAD ME ON, PLAY WITH MY FRAGILE HEART
READY, SET, GO.... LET'S START

OFF WE GO. ON A ROLL, COOL FALL BREEZE
BLOWIN' UP THE HILL
JILL CLOSES EYES, AS SHE LIES ON THE GRASS,
WAITIN' ON A FRIEND
SUMMER'S GONE AND PAST, WISH IT COULD LAST, PUSH BACK AUTUMN
LET'S STAY A WHILE, MAYBE LATER...
WE'LL RACE TO THE BOTTOM

RACE TO THE BOTTOM
Micah Sommersmith

You stood proud once
Spoke up loud once
Worked a crowd once like nobody
Well-respected
Well-connected
Well-protected then

You were certain
That the world was
Maybe dirty, never muddy
Wrong and right
Was black and white
And you were quite content

But the world has shifted since your glory days
Anchored points have drifted now so far away

And the truths you knew
Somehow you forgot them
Your deepest thoughts
It's like you never thought them
The wars you won
You can't remember why you fought them
So raise your glass
Raise your glass and race to the bottom

People walking
All around you
Unaware the world is burning
The way they’re talking
They astound you
How can they not see?

Minds destroyed
By Hollywood
And institutes of higher learning
Asteroids
Would be too good
For animals like these

Now the world is stranger than it used to be
And no one sees the danger except you it seems

But the truths you knew
Somehow you forgot them
Your deepest thoughts
It's like you never thought them
The wars you won
You can't remember why you fought them
So raise your glass
Raise your glass and race to the bottom

The future’s coming at you faster by the second
But you’re long past the age to answer when it beckoned

The truths you knew
Somehow you forgot them
Your deepest thoughts
It's like you never thought them
The wars you won
You can't remember why you fought them
So raise your glass
Raise your glass and race to the bottom

Race To The Bottom - Paco del Stinko

Down at the brew house 100 beers on tap
I planted my ass on a stool and took a look for a sap

I was gonna drink for free play my little game
Find a lonely out of towner looking for a sad luck dame

And then I saw a dude sitting alone in the corner
And then I saw the town pig a skeezy wheezer named of Lorna

I approached Mr. Lonely and gave his back a slap
Told him I'd get him laid if he'd pick up my tab

I caught Lorna's eye and gave her a nod and a wink
She sat down next to the dude and we all began to drink

I took a race to the bottom even though I started out low
Down here with the jetsam and flotsam and all the people we know
You tell me that it is rotten and you don't want to go
But down here at the bottom they put on one hell of a show

Give me another shot and give old Lorna two
Ain't no way we're finished ain't no way we're through
Set the room a-spinnin' set the night aglow
Shiny lights and laughs and grinning until into the black I go

The next thing that I knew I woke up dizzy and ill
Dude and Lorna were gone and left me with the bill

All I could do was laugh pick myself up and pay
Tonight I was the sap but tomorrow is another day

I took a race to the bottom even though I started out low
Down with all the jetsam and flotsam and all the people we know
You tell me that it is rotten and you don't want to go
But down here at the bottom they put on one hell of a show
Let's go!
Bringin' the stink since 2006.

Race to the Bottom
by glennny

Darlin’, it seems like we’ve reached a new low
how come everyone seems to get a little angrier?
multiply the the rate of excitement
justify the newest hypochondriac

and then the challenge was set:
ready? set. go!

Don’t be surprised if you win one
it’s a race to the bottom

I like you, you think
you’ve known me, to drink
sand castles build up
good use for my cup
you whisper your guilt
for spilling my milk

and once the challenge was set
steady met slow

Don’t compromise in the interum
it’s a race to the bottom

Darlin’,
(unlike you, I dream)
your desperation is starting to show
(silently, I scream)
how come,
(my shackles, are locked)
no matter what you always feel inferior?
(that ship sailed, and docked)
subdivide the latest achievement
(you whimper, and weep)
don’t deny my part the parameters
(your burden, to keep)

Darlin’,
(I like you, you think)
it seems like we’ve reached a new low
(you’ve known me, to drink)
how come
(sand castles, build up)
everyone seems to get a little angrier?
(good use for, my cup)
multiply the the rate of excitement
(you whisper, your guilt)
justify the newest hypochondriac
(for spilling, my milk)

too late for challenge regret
credit gets blown

Don’t sanitize down to the angstrom
it’s a race to the bottom
We fanaticize about the last crumb
it’s a race to the bottom

Race to the Bottom
A mediocre commission-piece birdsong by Pepper Jane

Have you heard about a little bird
Called the red-necked stint?
Before he's three months old he's told
He's gotta take a long haul trip

He is born in Siberia or Alaska
Then makes the big trek south
He is mostly grey and brown
Seven inches sitting down
But when breeding, red feathers 'round his mouth

Chorus
Every year it's a race to the bottom
Then the next year a trek back to the top
Thousands of 'em race to the bottom
For 20 years they might fly low with the flock

Have you heard about a little bird
Called the red-necked stint?
Before he's three months old he's told
He's gotta take a long haul trip

It seems these red-necked little guys are quite bipolar
They chase an endless summer, nowhere near the equator
August to April there are plent here down under
Some head to New Zealand or South Africa they wander

Chorus
Every year it's a race down to the bottom
Then the next year a trek back to the top
Thousands of 'em, and they all race to the bottom
For 20 years they might fly low with the flock

Have you heard about a little bird?
Have you heard?
And have you seen one?
Everything is about perspective.
