The People's Republic
by Lichen Throat
Three months gone,
And it feels so wrong
Not to have you by my side.
I get perplexed
About why your texts
Leave me so unsatisfied.
You write about
Your adventures out
In the smoggy, crowded streets,
But I can’t dismiss
That you’re quite remiss
Of asking about me.
Read about your weekend,
Read about your new friends,
When will you have time to call?
I’m feeling so alone;
Can I get you on the phone
After you see the Great Wall?
Don’t want this to be an attack,
But I’m starting to think that you won’t come back.
I see you’ve cut your hair short
Since you got your passport
Photo taken last June.
I think it looks nice.
Are you getting sick of rice?
Do you miss crab rangoon?
The Terracotta Army
Could feather me and tar me.
And I’d still wait for you,
But you haven’t written back.
I hope your backpack
Didn’t get lost in Chengdu.
Send me an Instagram
From Three Gorges Dam
So I know you didn’t forget me.
Staring at the ceiling,
Don’t remember feeling
So bad since before you met me.
Can’t wait to meet you on the tarmac,
But I’m starting to think that you won’t come back.
Are you coming back? Are you coming back?
Are you coming back from the People’s Republic?
Are you coming back? Are you coming back?
Are you coming back from the People’s Republic?
Four months away,
I think you’re going to stay;
You even rented a house.
I said you were the one,
But I fear we’re done.
I thought you would be my spouse.
You tore us apart.
I need a new start;
Moving to South Carolina.
I can’t take
Any more heartbreak,
So please, just stay in China.
I’ve been drinking like a lumberjack
Since I realized that you won’t come back.
