Black Mountain
by Lichen Throat
Hillsides glimmer in the dark of the night
From the fires of the moonshine stills.
I spent all day breathing anthracite
At the back of a six-inch drill.
I went underground while the dawn was just
A wish in the eastern sky.
I’m covered from head to boots with dust,
And my throat is raw and dry.
After eight hours of darkness,
I sometimes feel unwell.
If cleanliness is next to godliness,
Then I must be next to hell.
Lived my life at the foot of Black Mountain;
Never known anything else.
Oh, Black Mountain.
My daddy died when the mine caved in;
And my uncle’s got black lung.
This is how things have always been
Since great-grandpa was young.
We tell ourselves we’re the salt of the earth,
But the salt has lost its taste,
So we’ve been trampled underfoot
And buried in mining waste.
This city was never on a hill,
And the mountaintop’s been torn down.
Too many dead from fentanyl
Around this broken town.
Lived my life at the foot of Black Mountain;
Never known anything else.
Oh, Black Mountain.
Is this the way it has to be?
I can’t imagine so.
Oh, God above, hear my plea
And show us what to do.
The good old days ain’t coming back
No matter what the redcaps say.
One by one, the old smokestacks
Go cold, crumble away.
It’s hard to see this fall apart
And not fall to despair;
It’s hard to heal my broken heart
When our lives seem so unfair.
Lived my life at the foot of Black Mountain;
Never known anything else.
Oh, Black Mountain.

Re: Black Mountain
I didn't know that you were hurting
At least not to that degree
The shame I feel: A persistent devouring
Approximating your disease
And as I'm climbing that black mountain
Trying to outrun the pain
I lose my breath next to the chasm
And i fall back down again
Muffled sobbing: the wind it whispers
I try to hush all of these dark thoughts
I nearly yield to the incessant longing
I fail to gain solace I have sought
And as I'm climbing the black mountain
Trying to outrun the pain
I lose my breath next to the chasm
And i fall back down again
At least not to that degree
The shame I feel: A persistent devouring
Approximating your disease
And as I'm climbing that black mountain
Trying to outrun the pain

I lose my breath next to the chasm
And i fall back down again

13/8 135 bpm
Key of D
Don’t be afraid
It’s just a trick
Keep to yourself
Try not to die
I won’t climb Black Mountain
The witches and ghosts might get to me
I had good intentions
The difficulty was too much to bare
Despite What you said
I still get sick
Deep in my gut
Digesting a lie
I won’t climb Black Mountain
My wishes and hopes are dwindling
I bought new inventions
Elaborate ways to go nowhere

Vowl Sounds
I start the car, the snow's still coming down
It's been coming down for days now
And the ice has covered up the mirrors
But I can't wait until the road is clear
Black Mountain waits for me
Black Mountain waits
I saw a ghost by the side of the road
Wearing cutoff jeans and sandals in the snow
I stopped to pick her up and ask where she needed to go
She shook her head and said
I don't know,
I don't know
Black Mountain waits for me
Black Mountain waits
Fishtailing around the bends
The pines close in like a cave
Black Mountain, where I spent my darkest days
I've been a ghost
I tried to hide
All those days I should have been happy
But I bent my head over breakfast and began to cry
I start the car, the snow's still coming down
It's been coming down for days now
And the ice has covered up the mirrors
But I can't wait until the road is clear
Black Mountain waits for me

Nick Soma - Black Mountain
On the icy path towards
The top of the black mountain
You hope to find
The long lost fragments of your soul
You gave up long ago
But you don't know since no one told you
Give up the ghost
All the things you can't control
I stand alone
Outside imaginary walls
I have been to all these
Faraway places and seen
All the lights
That claim to guide you
But push you down.
A heavy storm is raging on
The top of the black mountain
One look inside
You're terrified at what you see
I stand alone
Outside imaginary walls
There on the other side
Of the mountain I saw
All the lights
That claim to guide you
Fade to black.
Abandoning all hope
You cannot cope with all this knowledge
How could you know
And is it better to surrender
How could you know
And is it better to surrender
How could you know
And is it better to surrender
On the icy path towards
The top of the black mountain
You hope to find
The long lost fragments of your soul
You gave up long ago
But you don't know since no one told you
Give up the ghost
All the things you can't control
