Guessing Game
by Lichen Throat
Wake up, and I don’t know who I am.
Broken body in a narrow bed.
They’re feeding me narcotics, many milligrams.
Got to get out of here and clear my head.
Break these casts off,
See if I can stand up.
Rip this wristband off,
Time for me to take off.
Someone paid to keep me in the loony bin;
Turns out it was my sister, Evelyn.
Steal some clothes and sneak outside.
Call up a cab and take a ride.
Trapped in a guessing game;
I don’t even know my name,
Only hope the truth will set me free.
Trying not to be afraid
Though I know I’ve been betrayed,
Desperate to regain my memory.
Got to get myself out of this mess.
Nowhere to go but my sister’s home.
Find a mansion at her address,
Under bright maples and dark oaks.
I’m greeted by wolfhounds;
My sister seems on her guard.
While she’s out, I snoop around,
Find a strange deck of cards.
Faint memories start coming back,
But most of my past remains black.
My brother calls on the phone;
He wants to talk to me alone.
Trapped in a guessing game;
I don’t even know my name,
But I can see they’re all afraid of me.
Not sure what to do,
Haven’t even got a clue,
Desperate to regain my memory.
Who am I? Who am I?
My brother takes me for a drive.
Landscapes shift before my eyes.
Big tanker truck on the wrong side.
Everything I see leaves me mystified.
Sparkling sidewalks,
Crowds of transparent men,
Smelter eating cars,
Kentucky fried lizard parts.
Close behind us, a horn sounds,
Along with the baying of hunting hounds.
Each mile forward is a harder slog.
Pursued through the forest by demon dogs.
Trapped in a guessing game;
I barely know my name.
No escape but down into the sea.
Sink beneath the waves,
Don’t want this to be my grave,
But somehow, through the water, I can breathe.
