The Handbook
Micah Sommersmith
I know it’s hard to live in a world surrounded by other people
This would all be so much easier on your own
If you think this way, you’re forgiven
But it’s just not the world that we live in
So I’ve compiled this resource to let you know
Whenever you need, just stop and take a breath and look
At the step-by-step instructions in this handbook
Step one is to know yourself
For better or worse, both in sickness and health
To trace your emotions back to their sources
Measure the strength of your internal forces
Not always easy, or pretty, or fun
But knowing yourself is step one
Step two is to then accept
That all those around you are just as complex
It’s not only you with a rich inner life
You got no monopoly on hardship and strife
Knowing everyone else is as human as you:
This, my friend, is step two
Then step three is to realize
That nobody else sees the world through your eyes
They’re human like you, but they’re creatures apart,
With different humors pumped by different hearts.
We’ve all got our own neuroses and needs,
And acknowledging this is step three.
And step four is to realize that nobody else can fix you
Step five is to realize you can’t fix anyone else
Then we get to step six,
Which is learning and embracing this:
While people cannot be fixed, they can be helped.
Then step seven is to live your life
With all of these principles well in mind
Treat your neighbor with a little grace
And everything else will just fall into place
We can build paradise on earthly time
You know seven’s the obvious rhyme
I know it’s hard to live in a world surrounded by other people
This would all be so much easier on your own
If you think this way, you’re forgiven
But it’s just not the world that we live in
So I’ve compiled this resource to let you know
