Better Luck Next Year
Jim Tyrrell

I saw a young man die
Under a knee
In the middle of the street
With indifference standing by

I heard his mama cry
And if you count up the tears
Of the last four hundred years
Then you don’t have to wonder why

We all know there’s a problem here
But If all you can share
Are Your thoughts and your prayers
It amounts to saying better luck next year

It seems we don’t have much chance
Cause how can we solve this
When their idea of progress
Is boarding up the windows in advance

So now I’m drinking to good things gone
One for the victim
One for the system
And rest of the booze
for the ones who get their news from a song

Here’s to better luck next year
Here’s to the people
Finally equal
In the land of the free
Not for just you and me
But for every single person living here

Better Luck Next Year
Balls To Monte

It began like any other year—
A hangover, and an empty beer.
My vision seemed so crystal clear,
2020 shades dangling from one ear.

CHORUS:
The virus moved in,
the jobs moved out;
The bars shut down
And I just shout:
Better luck next year!
Better luck next year!
Better luck next year!

New Year’s Eve was such a laugh
By September I’ve been clawed in half
Things can’t get any worse, I thought I heard you say
Then Ruth Bader Ginsberg passes away.

CHORUS

The entire year is cursed
Best selling car is a hearse,
So you better wear a mask
But if that’s too much a task

Better luck next year!
Better luck next year!
Better luck next year!
"...and it ain’t a fit night out for man or beast!”

This show is so tight like a surgeon's glove
I never thought it would be something I love
Watching it nightly is part of my life
It's such a good way to unwind with my wife
Stuck in the closet exposed to bubonic
Georgie and Derek are shook like tectonic
Stare at Burke’s hand and notice a tremor
Dramatic tension starting to simmer
Daddy comes in his heart’s nearly gone
Don’t question me Preston, just get Dr Hahn
I’m mad at you Izzie you spilled all my dirt
Artery rupture, stop the blood spurt
All hands on deck for the ferry crash
Meredith overboard fell with a splash
One crisis end now here comes another
You’re less like a lover and more like a brother

Don’t cry - have yourself a beer
You failed your exam but there’s always next year
If you study real hard there’s no need to fear
You can take it again there’s always next year

Get an apartment and move in with Lexie
Don’t you know she thinks you are sexy
Why won’t the interns chill with me
Cause you’re the boss, Iz you stupid or something
That sounds like something Karev would say
I keep tuning in day after day
But why? This drama gives me heartburn
All the gore makes my stomach churn
Found out you only failed by one point
So close to passing but still disappointment
Yo Chief Webber can I take it again
He took it again. And this time he win.
Don a flak jacket, go to Iraq
All of his colleagues were taken aback
“O’Malley did whaaaa?” He’s causing a fuss
The he saved a chick’s life and got hit by a bus

Everybody’s crying so many tears
Georgie’s dead cause he had no fear
Pay your respects, now pour out your beer
Guess he won’t be on the show next year.

Moon, shine your light on my shoulders
Moon, shine your light on my shoulders

In the eclipse, all the pinpricks of light between the leaves of the trees and the lashes of eyes turned into a billion cameras that printed the sun

When the volcano blew open the sky and the ashes rained down and the seas turned to fire, the city was frozen in time in a moment of pain

So do the birds in the trees sing about us and this terrible year and the breaking of hearts and the sadness and fear, the death and the moments of pain?

Or do they capture the shadows that drift past the sun, and what looked like a growl but was only a yawn, and the smiles that light up the room in a flash and are gone?

Moon, shine your light on my shoulders
Moon, tell me I’m right to be hopeful
Moon, tell me what I really need to hear
That maybe we’ll have better luck next year
Maybe we’ll have better luck next year
Maybe we’ll have better luck next year

I hope the next twelve months
can bring some positivity
cos the last few years
have knocked the optimism outta me
You say you want to sleep
and wake back up on January 1st
What if you open your eyes
to find that everything has got even worse?

I keep my chin up
and I won’t give in to fear
but I don’t think
we’ll have better luck next year
I clench my fists
try to make my worries disappear
but I’m not sure
we’ll have better luck next year

My life’s philosophy
has been to find the bright side
but everything’s so dark these days
it’s hard to find the right side
I’m not sure
what is on the cards
fuck this year for sure
but maybe also fuck next year twice as hard

If you made a resolution for January one and you never got a chance to get a thing done and now it's been six months since you've seen the sun...
Better luck next year
Better luck next year
If we all get lucky then we won't be dead next year

If you made a lot of plans to take a long vacation to try and get away for some relaxed contemplation but you never got a chance to hit your destination...
Better luck next year
Better luck next year
If we all get lucky then we won't be dead next year

If you thought the whole world was gonna be okay but now you realize we're in the midst of decay and it doesn't really matter what you do or say...
Better luck next year
Better luck next year
If we all get lucky then we won't be dead next year

Better Luck Next Year - tomdg

We’ll never wake up to another new Bowie song
Rickman is dead, obviously long gone
I’ll never see Prince play live, see Motörhead
Emerson, Lake and Cohen, all now dead

And all that you can say to me
Is keep your head down, keep your eyes shut, better luck next year
Better luck next year

I wake from the dream of a continent working together
The poor starve to death while the rich seem to prosper forever
The plague’s killing millions while others pretend it’s not there
The nazis are running the white house and nobody cares

And all that you can say to me ...

(break)

And all that you can offer to me
To ease the despair in my head
Is keep your head down, keep your eyes shut, better luck next year

Better Luck Next Year - Tim Hinkle

Twenty-six weeks have gone by
since I last gazed into her eyes
half a year since we’ve been near
each other

Other eyes are all I see
in faces they’ve hidden from me
so I can’t tell who in this hell
is smiling

Though the world’s on fire I long to feel
the embers in my heart are just as real
why must you choke the flame that burns inside me?

If I were at school today I might be sitting next to her
We could share a joke—isn’t our teacher such a fool
Do her parents understand the value of her education?
Can she talk to other boys? Does she think they’re cool?

I’ll never see my friends again
The outside world’s come to an end
And all I see is misery
unending

Hope I’ll get better luck next year
Hope I’ll get better luck next year
Hope I’ll get better luck next year
Better luck next year

Every December
Goodreads sends out
An email about
My challenge

Better luck next year
Is what they imply
'Cause I've not yet
Hit the number I set

But the year isn't done
The story's not over
As we loop round the sun
I read between the lines
That there's still time
To shine

Every December
I pull out all stops
And rise to the top
Of the stack

Nothing's off limits
As long as it's short
I don't care what I read
When I'm aiming for speed

But the year isn't done
The story's not over
As we loop round the sun
I read between the lines
That there's still time
To shine
There's still time
To shine

When the year isn't done
The story's not over
As we loop round the sun
I read between the lines
That there's still time
To shine

Better Luck Next Year - Hardmonica

[verse 1]
here we go!
another fight we throw
fix your sights on some dry land in Rome

it's not an epitaph
how do you spell a laugh?
oh lol oh el oh el oh

[chorus]
good night darling
the show's just starting

[verse 2]
so many warnings!
hey, they say a lot of things!
honey, keep away from windows

there's a shooting star
there's a burning car
make a wish on any old sparrow

[breakdown sham]
good luck is only known in photographs
the only time it's safe is when it's pitch black
hide your things
hide your face
build a wall around your place
are you safe?

[verse 3]
no need to concentrate
yeah, you've got time to waste
tidings of comfort and joy and good cheer

or you can pack your gear
six guns and lots of beer
maybe we'll have better luck next year

[outro]
good good good
better everyday
better all the way
we're good (so good)

Better Luck Next Year
by Cavedwellers

You wanted to do what nobody did
Do you wanted to be this year‘s new kid,
Oh well, better luck next year
You wanted to go where none had gone before
You wanted to destroy the record score
Oh well, better luck next year
You wanted to be the next big thing
You wanted the world to crown you king
Oh well, better luck next year
Cause everything has gone to hell
You know it’s true you know it well
Oh well, better luck next year

The world is watching
the sun burn out through protective paper glasses
But don’t the masses feel the fire at their very feet
People pouring into the street
Across the river is the promised land
You stretch out your empty hands

It’s not your year
It’s nobody’s
You can twist it anyway you please
Oh well, better luck next year

The world is watching
Watching through the goggles that they’re given
A legacy of living in the communication age
There is pestilence and there is rage
You know it’s true
Your reach out your empty hands across the blue

Sockpuppet - Better Luck Next Year

This year had its challenges
All my flowers dead, my
pain got worse, my brain got worse, there’s
something wrong with my head

What happened to my career, it
didn't go my way
Things feel bad, and I'm in fear I
won't live another day

oh, it can only get better
oh, I know it will get better

we see the rise of fascists who think
many lives don’t matter
a president who’s on the brink, only
cares to be flattered

where can our people go from here
it all just seems too much
famine devastation fear
we need a human touch

oh, it can only get better
oh, I know it will get better

but it wasn’t all so bad
some of it was swell
remember all the good times we had
Song Fight! Live went well

We take the hand we have been dealt
this year's problems were a-plenty
2019 really smelt, so
here’s to 2020

oh, it can only get better
oh, I know it will get better
oh, it can only get better
oh, I know it will get better

Better Luck Next Year - Paco del Stinko

You tried and you failed
All your hard work to no avail
It might be worse than you feared
Better luck next year

Better luck next year - Better luck next year

You laughed when it started
Now we're all broken hearted
Crack open another beer
Better luck next year

Better luck next year - Better luck next year

It's easy to feel down
Trampled in the mud and the blood on the ground
But there comes a point where you've had enough
And all you gotta do is pick yourself back up

We yelled and protested
Yet we always felt like we got bested
All the words fell on deaf ears
Better luck next year

Better luck next year - Better luck next year

It rained then it poured
All the while we were ignored
Sometimes it looks like the weather won't clear
Better luck next year

Better luck next year - Better luck next year
Better luck next year

It's easy to feel down
Trampled in the mud and the blood on the ground
But there comes a point where you've had enough
And all you gotta do is pick yourself back up

Pick yourself back up
Bringin' the stink since 2006.

Better Luck Next Year - Brown Word and the Big Whine

Whatcha gonna do at the end of the world?
Take your time or have a time?
Whatcha gonna do at the end of the world?
Whatcha gonna do at the end of the world?
Kill your health? Find yourself?
Find your start or find your end?
Throw your towel? Stake your ground?

Better luck next year
You glorious champion
I will still be here
I won't succumb to fear
Better luck next year
You hero of the world
The future's open wide
Won't you take a peek outside

Better luck next year
You glorious champion
The possibilities
They will keep lifting me
Better luck next year
You conqueror of the world
You can take my hand
Let's ring it in real grand
Better luck next year
You wonderful warrior
So long suckers
We don't need no Doomsday hucksters

You wanna out with the old and in with the new
Hey let just go straight to twenty twenty-two
And it's one two three what are we fighing here
Just put a mask on the whole damn year
Throw it in the trash or throw a 2020 bash
Whimper or bang, it's all the freakin' same

One for the road
I'm a-going off the deep end
366 leap year in the shitcan
Keep on truckin'
Cuz it's all you really got
You say why, well I say why not
Four on the floor
I'm headed for the border
Seasonal depression got me by the short-hairs
Keep makin' love
If that's all you really got
You say why and I say why not
Balls to the wall
I'm about to make the big call
2020 busted with Zoom on the install
Keep on giving blood
If you can squeeze it from a stone
You say why well I why the hell no

While twenty-twenty has been widely considered to be the worst year in modern memory
I think we can safely count the years 536, 1349, 1520, and 1941-1945 as complete disasters
depending on who you ask

Who is the traitor
Who lives among us?

Who is imposter?

Who blew reactor?
They are among us.

You might even catch me if you have a bad idea!

Things they won't get better before they get worse, I fear

Who is the golden snitch?

Let’s be clear about this
You will never see a better time
this is as good as it gets
You will never climb higher

You think that you’ll make a fist?
Ah, like that’ll change anything
we are all prisoners of this
masters of our own shit

Don’t hope for better luck next year
Don’t hope for better luck next year

You wanna be top of the heap?
there’s always someone bigger
Equal opportunity?
We’re all just shuffling deck chairs

We’re going down with the ship
Soon we’ll be nothing but fossils
Disappeared in a blip
Another Hot. Dead. Venus.

Don’t hope for better luck next year
Don’t hope for better luck next year

Don't tell me what to lose...

Better Luck Next Year - Robyn Mackenzie

Welcome to the land of the free throw
What's gonna happen next, well you never know
And I don't like what I hear on the radio
The world is gonna end and it's a one-man show

You say you want a revolution, well, it's happening now
We gotta find a way out of here somehow
Oh well
Better luck next year

Generations of the millennium
We grew up in a stolen utopia
Politicians play on the battlefront
And I can hardly think, 'cause I feel so numb

Don't act like it's a mystery
It's just a cruel game of history
Oh well
Better luck next year

So don't crawl, don't walk
You better fucking run to the streets if you wanna see the sun
Can't wait for kingdom come
We never sleep, we're never done
Information all around
You better scream if you wanna hear the sound
Don't let 'em knock you down
We're gonna take 'em to the fucking ground
Oh yeah

Better luck next year
Better luck next year
Better luck next year

Better Luck Next Year, Night Sky

Penny counts the beans all day
And paints her wild dreams at night
That freak storm in the midwest
Left her glorious canvas white

Chorus:
Working hard is the easy part
What gets you are the fights unfought
Creeps and demons you didn’t see
Better luck next year better luck next year

Tommy laid in wait at Jack’s
Penny went there to relax
Before she saw him he attacked
She barely made it out the back

Chorus

Instrumental Verse

Bridge:
We won’t get surprised again
Cause we see the sleight of hand
Our eyes open now and clear
We’ll see better luck next year

That night Penny sat to paint
Every line of Tommy’s face
She traced every edge in red
So she never would forget

Chorus
Night Sky is Sally on lyrics, Steve on drums, and Matt on the other stuff

Better Luck Next Year
by Lichen Throat

Nineties country is not just music,
It’s your way of life,
Out where all the neighs and moos
Are the only kind of strife.
Clint and Alan sing their songs
About small towns and trucks,
Where the roadhouse serves hash browns
And fills your coffee cups.
It’s a hard, hard life you have,
Out among the steers.
You got a bad price for your calves—
Better luck next year.

You work downtown for 40 hours,
If you tell the truth,
In between the concrete towers,
Among the modern youth.
Because you live so far away,
You’re late every time it snows.
If you can’t do your work that day,
That’s just how it goes.
It’s a hard, hard life you live,
So cry another tear.
It takes more than you can give—
Better luck next year.

You don’t think you can be a real cowgirl
If you don’t own six horses.
What makes you think you’re in love now, girl,
After two divorces?

It’s hard to find some batwing chaps
Without a fancy fringe,
No point in patching fencing gaps,
When the gate is off its hinge.
The dude ranch doesn’t have a dude;
The barn is out of hay.
You’ll have to leave the mare unshoed
And let her halter fray.
It’s a hard, hard life you chose
To keep the cowboy gear.
The almanac’s prediction shows
No better luck next year.

Re: Better Luck Next Year

Post by SweeneyToad »

I lost my mind at the video arcade
I told myself everything would be okay
But that was a lie I was just losing it at home
I haven’t left my house in months I’m so alone
I picture all the things I used to do last year
Like going to the bowling alley to grab a beer
But now I never leave the house because of the fear
I don’t want to get sick again so I steer clear

The world is burning down to the ground today
It’s not the news you wanted to hear me say
It’s not the head line you expected to hear
But maybe we will have better luck next year

I know we just want to have this year come to a close
But what if next year is some how worse how will we know
I suppose we can always hope for the best
But what if who you vote for doesn’t get any respect
What did you expect things to really go your way
If you still living in America might be silly to stay
Or maybe we can just leave the planet entirely
If my boss doesn’t like it well damn it he can fire me
I’m leaving this plateau you know I just want to leave
Live with alien hybrid grays I just want to believe
And I don’t care if the place is a lot colder
Abduct me from this planet I’m agent fox mulder

The world is burning down to the ground today
It’s not the news you wanted to hear me say
It’s not the head line you expected to hear
But maybe we will have better luck next year
