I'd Rather Drink With the Devil

I'd Rather Drink With the Devil - Robyn Mackenzie

Well it's fifteen past midnight
I got a bottle in hand
And I made it through the winter
Now I try to make a stand
In this cold and dark apartment
That's never been. my home
And I think, and I sink like a stone

And I'm dreaming about Heaven
But I'm on my way to hell
And I'm hoping for a miracle
But only time will tell
Hear the voices in my memory
Telling me to wait
Till the day that I stand at the pearly gates

Well the night is long and lonely
And I'm tired and I'm bored
And they say that I'm a warrior
So I fall upon my sword
And I know that when it's over some might say I went a bit overboard
But I'd rather drink with the Devil than dine with the Lord

It's an hour past the sunrise
And I'm lying awake
Thinking 'bout the days of old
They would have burned me at the stake
And I'm dancing to the music
That's ringing in my head
And I could stay here but I think I'll go instead

Cause the night is long and lonely
And I'm tired and I'm bored
And they say that I'm a warrior
So I fall upon my sword
And I know that when it's over some might say I went a bit overboard
But I'd rather drink with the Devil than dine with the Lord

And I know you see what's wrong with me
I can't shake it off, it's my destiny
And I wish you well and I wish you love
But you won't find me up above

Cause the night is long and lonely
And I'm tired and I'm bored
And they say that I'm a warrior
So I fall upon my sword
And I know that when it's over some might say I went a bit overboard
But I'd rather drink with the Devil than dine with the Lord

Ooh, I'd rather drink with the Devil
Ooh, I'd rather drink with the Devil

If the dusty trail leads you to nowhere
You can come see me
If the pain is too much to bare
You can lean on me

If you want to drink with the devil,
Pull up a seat
I'd rather drink with the devil
And the devil is me

You might find yourself down in a hole
Down on your luck, down on your soul
Call me up when you're feeling low
Have a drink with me

If you want to drink with the devil
Pull up a seat
I'd rather drink with the devil
And the devil is me

I'd Rather Drink with the Devil
by Lichen Throat

Yellow leaves on the aspens,
Thin clouds in the sky.
Cold breeze through the tavern walls
Makes lanterns flicker inside.
After six months in the gold fields,
He takes a seat at the rail.
With sunburned hands not yet peeled,
He raises his first mug of ale.
He says, “I’d rather drink with the devil,
Than spend another night alone.
Tonight I’m going to revel,
Until the cows come home.”

Everyone sees her enter
and hears her slam the door.
But no one dares to befriend her
As she steps to the open floor.
Troubadours begin to play
And hands begin to clap.
She closes eyes and starts to sway
As they watch, enrapt.
She says, “I’d rather drink with the devil,
Than stay here in this town,
Dreary and disheveled,
I hope it all burns down.”

She stamped her feet, then took a seat
And shivered in the chill.
With angry eyes, she warned the guys
That they had best stay still.

Minutes pass; he sends his coat
When the barman clears the mugs.
He wonders if she’ll find his note,
And then he simply shrugs.
Hours pass; the night is old,
When she comes and murmurs thanks.
He talks of plans to seek more gold
On the graveled river banks.
He says, “I’d rather drink with the devil,
Than leave here without you.
Come dig the sand and pebbles,
Let mud dry on your shoes.
If that’s not the life for you,
Then leave me in a year,
But I think you’re overdue
To get away from here.”

I’d Rather Drink With The Devil by Sweeney Toad

I stepped out the hallway saw they left trash in the living room
I started to clean up with a steam vac I’m a giving dude
I’m missing shoes I don’t care look I am bare foot
I see foot prints and paw prints me and my dog share looks
Something is wrong something is not right
Something very strange happened here last night
I open the blinds I can taste the sun light
It tastes like gasoline and motor oil think we had a fun night
Haven’t seen my wife yet I bet she must be in the basement
She don’t drink very often I hope she didn’t get too wasted
There is a phantom smell of smoke stinking real hard
I fell down the stairs found her drinking in the dark

Saw a potted plant with a horse head sprouted out
The oil pumping through my veins felt like clouded doubt
Implore you to go your eyes were pink and unsettled
You smirked and you said I’d rather drink with the devil
Saw a potted plant with a horse head sprouted out
The oil pumping through my veins felt like clouded doubt
Implore you to go your eyes were pink and unsettled
You smirked and you said I’d rather drink with the devil

I looked in your eyes and wondered why you looked so different
You looked the same but with insane cooked up figments
Imprisoned in your mind but you wanted to stay there
Like you’d been possessed but obsessed and haunted to play fair
I play with your hair in hopes you snap out of this spell
But your hair is now snakes and you’re passed out in hell
I’ve made mistakes but you’ve made a grave error
The Devil owns your soul paid the toll of great terror
I hate to care it tears me up I lost you to evil
Always knew the cost of loving a mind so feeble
But I’m weak too I’m the pot to your kettle
If I had to pick my poison I’d smoke pot with the Devil

Saw a potted plant with a horse head sprouted out
The oil pumping through my veins felt like clouded doubt
Implore you to go your eyes were pink and unsettled
You smirked and you said I’d rather drink with the devil
Saw a potted plant with a horse head sprouted out
The oil pumping through my veins felt like clouded doubt
Implore you to go your eyes were pink and unsettled
You smirked and you said I’d rather drink with the devil

He's got Beelzebub brew

Lucifer's elixir eternal damnation fixer

If you're lookin' for a good time don't give me a call
Quit your snivelin' it ain't your fault
Hear me now on the level when I tell you the truth
I'd rather drink with the devil than with you

Firewater and brimstone
With a twist of the lime
Drinkin' with the devil is one hell of a time

If you're lookin' for a good time don't give me a call
Quit your bitchin' it ain't your fault
Hear me now on the level when I tell you the truth
I'd rather drink with the devil than with you

Drink up drink up

If you're lookin' for a good time don't give me a call
Quit your cryin' it ain't your fault
Hear me now on the level when I tell you the truth
I'd rather drink with the devil than with you

Tossin' back with Satan
Only for the bold
Be prepared to pay up it will cost you your soul

If you're lookin' for a good time don't give me a call
Quit your whinin' it ain't your fault
Hear me now on the level when I tell you the truth
I'd rather drink with the devil than with you
Bringin' the stink since 2006.

I'd Rather Drink With The Devil - Brown Word and the Big Whine

Many ages ago Lucifer fell
And things just ain't been the same since
Over the years his poison has changed
But let's just say he's partial to absinthe

Well an angel fell from heaven
Gotta ask if it hurt
Cuz I never had a pickup line
That actually worked

But I'll take my whiskey black
And I'll take 'em back to back
Just to hear the merry tails
of raunchy Old Scratch

Rather be drinking with the devil
in a rotgut roadhouse
Than cling to sober piety
They say I'll pay a penance
In my own due time
Yeah I'm drinking with the devil
On a borrowed dime

Well I saw him playing poker
When he anted up
He bet a thousand screaming souls
And a blood-filled cup

Lost it all to a hedge fund manager
Bet you never seen
The Lord of Flies turn redder

Rather be drinking with the devil
in a disco biker tavern
Than cling to sober piety
They say I'll pay a penance
In my own due time
Yeah I'm drinking with the devil
On a counterfeit dime

People always want to know
Is the devil an angry drunk?
Or is he a happy drunk
I think it's safe to say
He's a little of both

Rather be drinking with the devil
in a rotgut roadhouse
Than cling to sober piety
They say I'll pay a penance
In my own due time
Yeah I'm drinking with the devil
On a borrowed dime

Rather be drinking with the devil
in a country rap saloon
Than cling to sober piety
They say I'll pay a penance
In my own due time
Yeah I'm drinking with the devil
On a stolen dime

imagine me in '93
straightedge Mormon on my mission in my teens
I was depressed and confused
so when I heard "Out of Step" coming from a house I was like "who?"

I rang the bell, straightened my tie
in a dark room stood this drunken mess of old disheveled guy
I said "excuse me sir, I was thinking you were edge"
He said "I used to be, but now I'm something else instead"

He sat me down on his weird couch
he said he'd lived with my same sorrow but he'd figured a way out
and he went on to explain
every detail of my sadness; every aspect of my pain

I broke on down right there
where I collapsed in tears
and I said "man, so what was the escape?"
he stood up with a waddle
fetched a whiskey bottle
and said boy, the answer's in this drank."

he said:
I wished I was dead.

...but instead of the gun,
I reached for the bottle instead

I'd rather drink with the devil
and lose this useless soul
I'd rather disappoint Ian MacKaye
then pay the reaper's toll.
this whiskey is the only thing that's keepin' me alive
I know the same's for you and that's why I'm here: to save your life

I closed my hand on the frozen glass
I had one and then another and just kept knockin' em back
so it began. I quit the church.
I embraced the bottle with narry a squabble
but jesus, it got so much worse

The years went by
and I synthesized
a quantum tunnel process to control the flow of time
and now I'm back again where I was back then
but now the roles are switched and with this...
I'm changing my mind.

I still wish I was dead.

I check my watch
put on that Minor Threat
get up off of the weird couch
and prepare to live this moment allover again
this time I'm forsaking the bottle
instead I'm getting down the gun
and I sit and I wait
for myself to ring the door bell
again

(Note that this was an attempt to skirt around the edge of the "no first person" optional challenge with time travel rather than endorsing the idea of committing suicide by going back in time and killing a younger version of yourself. Please don't do that.)

You’re all good people, you tell yourselves
With motives to make the world better
With your new eco-mandates
To guide those of us, of the lesser

We don’t need this
We don’t want this
We won’t take it
Leave us alone

You think your rules are essential
Though just partly based on science
You mark out a path to follow
With intent to force our compliance

We don’t need this
We don’t want this
We won’t take it
Leave us alone

We don’t need this
We don’t want this
We won’t take it
Leave us alone

My pastor offered me some communion wine
I have it once a month and it's just fine
She tells me that God is watching me
But there's a whole lot of things I'd rather God not see

I'd rather drink with the devil
I'd rather drink with the devil
I'd rather drink with the devil
'Cause the devil is much more fun

Many people don't believe in him
Or think that they can live a life of sin
But for me I'm free of fear
So get out of the way 'cause I need a beer

I'd rather drink with the devil
I'd rather drink with the devil
I'd rather drink with the devil
'Cause the devil is much more fun

Satan's the G.O.A.T.
He knows the most
About drinking and carrying on
Satan's the one
Who knows what must be done
Pour a cold one and come on
Pour a cold one and come on

I'd rather drink with the devil
I'd rather drink with the devil
I'd rather drink with the devil
'Cause the devil is much more fun

Em
Well everyone saw that Oprah piece
C G
Where Meg didn’t name the prince from Greece
Am
But someone not far from the crown
C Em
Was worried that the baby may be too brown

Who could it be oh who could it be
Says Dana Carvey dressed as Church Lady
Probably was a number of folks
But they'd have you think it was just the oldest bloke

C Em
At the end of the day they’re just some wealthy strangers
C Em
Lifting pinkies drinking tea don’t make them angels

D
And when the racist duke was laid down level
F C G
He said send me down I’d rather drink with the Devil

The man was like a leaky spigot see
With a drip drip drip of crusty bigotry
They’d hush him up from time to time
If they thought it might hurt the bottom line

But he just said what they all thought
And he’s the one that always got caught
Never mind the greater stain
of pillaged lands and ill gotten gains

Cause at the end of the day they’re just some wealthy strangers
LIfting pinkies drinking tea don’t make them angels

And when the racist Duke was laid down level
He said send me down I’d rather drink with the Devil.

This song is about the time my wife got stung by a southern devil scorpion and I got pissed at it and drowned it with a hose

Camouflaged on the top soil
She felt the sting and she recoiled
Her hand went numb, no feeling
Cherry red, not so appealing

"My finger's burning, lit up like a torch,
hey man, check under the porch"

I got the nozzle set to "spray"
Like Guantanamo Bay
Take a drink you southern devil
Today is your last day

Flip the brick now, you're revealed
You stung my wife, your fate is sealed
Tail's up in a defensive pose
I won't deal with that, I'm grabbing the hose

I got the perpetrator right in my sights
Don't like to kill but I think this is alright

Twist the spigot let it spray
Like Guantanamo Bay
You ruined Momo's Saturday
Yeah, I don't think that's okay
Now take a drink, you southern devil
I'm gonna make you pay

Moody Vermin

he got a nasty cigar burn
in the middle of his lap
it dropped right out of his mouth
on his first heart attack

no easing up on the pedal
who cares to paint inside the lines
no pinky up with the royals, he'd say,
I'd rather sleep between the pines

the doctor warned about his heart
said the day could come quickly
he swallowed the news with ice cream
and washed it down with some whiskey

it was the middle of the summer
when he reaped what he'd sown
clutching his heart behind the wheel
as his car veered off the road

no time for smelling the flowers
who cares to bail out the vessel
no sipping tea with the living, he'd say,
I'd rather drink with the devil
I am definitely too square for how experimental this is, but I can imagine that if I was in the right state of mind, the section starting at 2:20 might transport me to another dimension - jeffhenderson

There was a plane
Everyone raced to get on it
Take-off was smooth
But no one survived when it fell

The mystery grew
Investigations were started
Families grieved (for loved ones)
And couldn’t accept they were gone

If they had to do it over again
Could they spare that many family and friends?

People were lost
Somebody must be responsible
Technology fail?
Or was it the pilots on board?

Frustration was high
Answers were so hard to come by
But charges were laid (karma karma karma, etc.)
The fleet was grounded outright

And when they asked the experts building the planes
If they knew exactly what was to blame

They said: “This can’t be
Can’t be our technology”
They were wrong
And some of them knew all along

Victims’ families got some lawsuits settled
Even though defendants weren’t on the level
Families said I’d rather drink with the devil
Than live through this

Suzy says to Johnny -you're wasting my time
Johnny says to Suzy -you're reading my mind
Suzy says to Johnny -you act like a clown
Johnny says to Suzy -you're making me drown.

I'd rather drink with the devil
I'd rather drink with the devil
then have you around

Johnny says to Suzy -I need to be free
Suzy says to Johnny -that's okay with me
Johnny says to Suzy - I never was true
Suzy looks at Johnny - This is something I knew

I'd rather drink with the devil
I'd rather drink with the devil

Johnny had a change of heart
Johnny wanted to make a brand new start
Suzy didn't feel the same
Didn't want to play that stupid game.

Johnny says to Suzy - I want you back
Suzy says to Johnny - There's just no chance
Johnny says to Suzy - Let's work it out
Suzy says to Johnny - I have my doubts

I'd rather drink with the devil

I’d Rather Drink With the Devil
spite

Gray
Gray as October
Breath
Burns with the cold
Running along the bridge that spans the highway
Thinking about how far I am from home

Stars
Sputter and crackle
Or is that just the power lines above?
Cutting away the distance of two strangers
Taking apart the mystery of love

I'd rather drink with the devil
Than celebrate another sober year in this place
I'd rather die trying
Than sleepwalking into a fine and pleasant grave
I don't want to be

Safe
Safe as houses
Locked up
Behind their gates

Ghosts
Drift through the wreckage
Invisible
Under dead weight

Rattling all the chains that bound their bodies
Calling the last lost moths back to the flame

I'd rather drink with the devil
Than celebrate another sober year in this place
I'd rather die trying
Than sleepwalking into a fine and pleasant grave
I don't want to be

Yaks of the Industry

Verse 1
Playing it safe just isn’t for me
I like it perilous, give it to me risky
I need to feel the danger
I like it close to the fire, give it to me stranger

Prechorus
Let’s raise a glass to trouble
Make this one a double

Chorus
I’d rather drink with the devil
In the middle of hell, so beautiful
I don’t want to be careful
I just want to feel special

Verse 2
Pedal to the metal, is how I drive
I like to feel like I might not survive
I need to feel the danger
Me and my good friend, Saint Anger

Prechorus
Let’s raise a glass to trouble
Let’s make this one a double

Chorus
I’d rather drink with the devil
In the middle of hell, so beautiful
I don’t want to be careful
I just want to feel special

Bridge
The party’s on in purgatory
Fireball shots are mandatory
Starring in this horror story
Tattoo my chest “no guts no glory”

Solo

Prechorus
Let’s raise a glass to trouble
Let’s make this one a double

Chorus
I’d rather drink with the devil
He takes it to a whole other level
I don’t want to be careful
I just want to feel special

Re: I'd Rather Drink With the Devil

Post by daveyboy103 »

How do you think
That this is gonna end for you
Do you think that you just walk away
And carry on like any other day

I hold the key
And I hold redemption too
And you have given me zero reasons
To hand them over to you

Now you’re on your own
You are cut off and you are free
There’s nothing that you can say
That will mean a single thing to me

So let’s raise a glass
Let’s sing a toast or two
To all of the things in this world
That mean the most to you

CHORUS.

And I know that doesn’t include me
My eyes are open and now I can see
Now you got me at my lowest level
I would rather drink with the devil

Where did it all go wrong
When did we leave the straightened road
And we lost to each other now
And there was noone to take the load

I can see it in your eyes
I can hear it beating in your chest
The death of this thing that we had
A death to which we acquiesced

So now we’re on our own
All cut off and fancy free
There’s nothing that we can say
That will mean a single thing to me

So let’s raise a glass
Let’s sing a toast or two
To all of the things in this world
That mean the most to you

CHORUS.

And I know that doesn’t include me
My eyes are open and now I can see
Now you got me at my lowest level
I would rather drink with the devil

BRIDGE

And when love dies
It leaves some scars inside
That never heal
Leaves you wondering how you would feel

CHORUS.

And I know that doesn’t include me
My eyes are open and now I can see
Now you got me at my lowest level
I would rather drink with the devil
I would rather drink with the devil
I would rather drink with the devil
Now
