Nur Ein XVI - Semiprecious
Semiprecious
by Frankie and the Mountweasels
3am in Gympie and the neon lights of Brisbane and your loving arms and coffee are still 2 more hours drive
I love it on the road
Carrying my load
I love it on the road
I love my semi trailer
I love my semi trailer
My precious semi trailer
I love the trucking life
I love the trucking life
I love my precious semi trailer, she's my semi: precious wife
Precious semi, precious semi
I truck to Oodnadatta
Truck to Parramatta
Any destination cos it doesn't trucking matter
Trucking Ulladulla
Truck Eurobodalla
Trucking Cunnamulla
I'm a cunning trucking fellow
All around the trucking world
East, south, west, north
And down the trucking autobahn to trucking Dusseldorf
Precious semi, precious semi

I keep spending my money
on the things I don't really need
I keep spending my time
on me
it feels like I'm skimming semi precious stones
it feels like I'm skimming semi precious stones
I keep spending our money
on my own little luxuries
I keep taking my time
freely
it feels like I'm skimming semi precious stones
it feels like I'm skimming semi precious stones
just hear me out
I keep telling you repeatedly

That title was a challenge. It took me a long time to rustle up something in the recess of my brain for this. The lightbulb moment came when I thought about what I like to do with stones on holiday, then I thought of skimming semiprecious stones as a metaphor for throwing away money. Ironically (I think it is ironic, I was get a bit lost on the meaning and Alanis Morrisette didn't help!) after I had written this song it encouraged me to splurge on an Oculus Quest 2.
I started writing this with piano in mind but it just grew into this big guitar rock number, I was happy to let it flourish.

Semiprecious - Third Cat
our love might not be one in a million
one in ten sounds about right
our love might not shine like a diamond
moonstone lights the night
there's not too many others i'm thinking of
we've got a semiprecious kind of love
kind of love

Budget Bears
he’s making a scene
“do you know who I am?”
before I’ve had the chance
to properly scan
all the documentation
and his crumpled invitation
he’s an irritation, and
he’s throwing his toys out of the pram
his name’s on the guest list
but he’s acting pretty reckless
if you’re asking, my guess is
that he’s somewhat semiprecious
so I’m waving him through
he is granted admission
but there’s a chip on his shoulder
about the lack of recognition
he’s a major star
with a flashy car
now he heads to the bar
to continue to make an exhibition
he’s sweaty and restless
and increasingly breathless
my guess is
that he’s semisemiprecious
he’s not getting served
the meltdown is glorious
if you can’t be famous
you can always be notorious
he made quite an entrance
but he’s leaving already
my guess is
that he’s semisemisemisemisemisemisemisemi…

Re: Nur Ein XVI - Semiprecious
I remembered this article about the Myanmar jade trade I read a while back. I reread it, and then I read some more articles, and then I watched a documentary, and then I wrote this song. Sorry to get all serious
Liner notes:
Semiprecious - The Lowest Bitter
blood, jade and silicosis,
your life is semiprecious
workers lost in a landslide
" goop™ " upon the gravestone
your life is semiprecious
but the jade rollers are in right now!
needling the earth,
and a needle in the arm,
your life is semiprecious
a stain upon your gemstone,
the evil in your palm
your life is semiprecious
your life is semiprecious
tearing down the forest,
turn it all to dust -
it's only semiprecious!
are you coughing up a lung?
are you coughing up blood?
you're only semiprecious!
all the semiprecious,
a tidal wave of dirt,
only semiprecious,
buried in the earth,
all the semiprecious,
a tidal wave of dirt,
only semiprecious,
buried in the earth
somewhere in this wasteland,
among the shifting scree
there are riches,
there's a future,
all waiting for me,
just don't let this ground collapse beneath
just don't let this ground swallow me
just don't let this ground collapse
(your life is semiprecious)
just don't let this ground
(your life is semiprecious)
all the semiprecious,
a tidal wave of dirt,
only semiprecious,
buried in the earth,
(your life is semiprecious)
all the semiprecious,
a tidal wave of dirt,
only semiprecious,
buried in the earth
(your life is semiprecious)
your life is semiprecious
your life is semiprecious

SPOILER

I find repetition easy, the "gradual emphasis" part of the challenge was a bit trickier to interpret though. Hopefully I've managed it. The song has the same simple bassline repeating throughout, and then I introduced other repetitive elements as I went along - like the USB connect/disconnect noise sounding synth, the high synth melody, and the strings - and gradually brought them all together, which I hope fulfils the challenge. I also tried to get the gradual emphasis on repetition in the lyrics, with the "your life is semiprecious" line appearing at first intermittently and then getting repeated more frequently as the song goes on.
Lyrically, once I had decided to write about the ecological and human rights disaster of jade mining in Myanmar, I fixated on the idea that if you interpreted the word semiprecious quite literally it would mean "half as valuable", which seemed a good way to view our detached relationship from the low paid, poorly treated workers making any number of the products we buy. I liked the lyric "your life is semiprecious" as some sort of comment on that.
In terms of the song itself I wanted it to sound really intense and almost oppressive, but still be quite melodic, trying to musically get across the ugliness and the beauty side by side. I wanted the bassline to be super upfront in the mix, which made creating clarity in the rest of the mix and the vocals much harder, but hopefully I've managed it. And then to contrast the grinding bassline I tried to adopt a singsongy, sort of nursery rhyme vocal melody in parts, particularly the "all the semiprecious, a tidal wave of dirt" section. I also wanted this switching between clean vocals and distorted, scuzzy vocals throughout the song, again trying to get this idea of that ugliness lurking beneath the goop-y sheen.

Semiprecious - Brown Word and the Big Whine
I've always been a sucker for colored glass
Never needed anything more gold than brass
But when it came time for my appraisel
You took up the loupe and declared my value
You said that I was semiprecious
Well what else do I gotta do?
I'll never be a ruby or an emerald
I might be an amethyst
Let me be your fool's gold
You said that I was semiprecious
Well what else do I gotta do?
Diamond's radiance is much too bold
Sapphire to my eye is much too cold
But when it came time for my appraisel
You took up the loupe and declared my value
You said that I was semiprecious (semiprecious)
Well what else do I gotta do? (gotta do)
I'll never be a ruby or an emerald

Let me be your fool's gold
You said that I was semiprecious (sem-precious)
Well what else do I gotta do? (gotta do)
To mean a little more to you (more to you)
Peridot, rose quartz, onyx, garnet -
Topaz, citrine, moonstone, tanzanite
Aquamarine, jade, turqouise and agate
In every single shade to compliment the pallet
But you said that I was semiprecious (semiprecious)
Well what else do I gotta do? (gotta do)

Semiprecious
by Max Bomb-ass
I found a diamond in the rough
And I polished it until the dawn
But as I worked it shrank and shrank
Until the gem I found was gone
I turned it over and over again
I turned it over and over
Until there was nothing left
I came across a vein of gold
And it glittered in my sight
But as I dug it disappeared
And I could only find pyrite
I dug deeper and deeper and deeper until it was spent
It was going and going and going and then it went
So I ask myself
What I'm making may not be silver and gold
Am I taking the time to polish precious stones?
I read a letter from my past
That was sent from a different life
Before I knew what I had planned
Would never come to light
And I cried and I cried and I cried and I cried until I was dry
Now I'm asking and asking and asking and asking why
I never told myself that
What I'm making may not be silver and gold
Am I taking the time to polish precious stones?
What I'm making may not be silver and gold
Am I taking the time to polish precious stones?
I turned it over and over and over and over again
I turned it over and over and over and over until there's nothing left.

semi, semi, semi

was I the fool, to think it gold
I thought I knew what it was worth

because it was only
semi, semi, semi

semi, semi, semi

and as a girl

he seemed so smart

The second verse is true but I took a little bit of poetic license/for prosody's sake I wrote "girl" when I was actually 25 (he was 35). So it is not meant to be creepy/pedophiliac!!! FYI!! Drum machine is the built in drum from my Omnichord, that's why it sounds like a cheap 80s/90s Casio.

Balance Lost
This house is quiet today
An unexpected consequence
Of what I didn't say soon enough
Things will go back to how they've always been
My routine unsettled
Only temporarily
Our songs are only semiprecious
To you, to me
And nobody else is interested
In our methods
These stones are only semiprecious
To you, to me
And nobody else is interested
In our possessions
The moment seemed important
And now it's passing
I'm not being funny
And you're not laughing
You're not trying, You're not running
But you've gotta leave
So I'll put it in a letter
An old sweater, comfortably
Our songs are only semiprecious
To you, to me
And nobody else is interested
In our methods
These stones are only semiprecious
To you, to me
And nobody else is interested
In our possessions
A secret kept from me
Is only hidden from yourself
And nobody loses anything
Except the two of us
This house is quiet today

Semiprecious
I think you’re in love with your own damn shadow
Cut you open, see what is in your marrow
Wound up tight, years of spite coiled in your mainspring
In your prime, buy your time, waiting for the big thing
You got stones
Semiprecious
You got gold
A micron thin
You got goals
In your recesses
Dress to impress
Play to win
Feel that strap on your back when you don the leather
At the Mauntak retreat in the warmer weather
Timeless style, flash that smile with the cameras clicking
Keeping time by design while you take that licking
Keep on ticking
You got stones (stones)
Semi Precious (stones)
You got gold (gold)
A micron thin (gold)
You got goals (goals)
In your recesses (goals)
Dress to impress (impress)
Play to win
You got the cuff links and the pens
You rent the Jaguar and the Benz
You turned your betters into friends
The stars are where your story ends
You got stones (stones stones)
Semiprecious (stones stones)
You got gold (gold gold)

Semiprecious
by Lichen Throat
I got the truck that Peter built,
Leather seats with a diamond quilt,
Wheels shiny black, chrome on the stacks,
And a grille with an inset skull.
Life on the road is the life for me,
Back and forth from sea to sea.
I love my truck, making good bucks,
With chrome that never gets dull.
Semiprecious, precious semi,
King of the open road.
Semiprecious, precious semi,
Live by the truckers’ code.
I got a girl in New Orleans,
Looking good in her skinny jeans.
Big brown eyes, soft curvy thighs
And skin with a creamy feel
She doesn’t raise my steady pulse,
Doesn’t make my heart convulse.
But I still stay; she’s pretty okay,
But two legs ain’t eighteen wheels.
Semiprecious, precious Jenny.
Not quite the queen of my heart
Semiprecious, precious Jenny.
I don’t mind our time apart.
My chocolate chips are semisweet.
My ice cream is semifreddo.
And the stone on the ring I bought you is semiprecious.
My trailer was made by Fruehauf.
My mud flaps tell you to back off.
When I feel drab, I sleep in the cab,
And the diesel fumes cheer me up.
I’m married to the blacktop.
My home is in a truck stop.
Life on the road never grows old
When you’ve got a load to pick up.
Semiprecious, precious semi,
You’ll always be my home.
Semiprecious, precious semi,
You’ll never leave me alone.

Title: Semiprecious
Challenge: Gradual emphasis of repetitions
It’s hell down in a well
I really shouldn’t be here
Held in wet and dirty hands
Drenched in sweat and fear
I’m a scared little lamb
Trapped by a dirty little man
With a closet full of dresses
Treating me like I’m only semiprecious
I’ve seen his gradual progression
From curiosity to obsession
His hunger is all consuming
But he keeps up with my grooming
I’m a scared little lamb
Trapped by a dirty little man
With a closet full of dresses
Treating me like I’m only semiprecious
He can’t even protect me
I’m a victim in purgatory
He’s on the edge of insanity
He treats me like an accessory
I’m a scared little lamb
Trapped by a dirty little man
With a closet full of dresses
Treating me like I’m only semiprecious

I'm in love with my truck

Love me baby
I'm your Rubber Duck
Reefer in the back

You come for me
You pick me up
You pull me in
With your kinetic pulse
I come for you
I set you free
I hold you close
A bright crushing blue
From beyond the sea
Lapis lapis lapis lazuli
You wash over me
Like a bright orange glow
Over Lavender Bay spiked with
Lapis lapis lapis lazuli
Lapis lazuli
I reach your shores
I drift away
My mind awash
Under your semiprecious sway
You catalyse
You set me free
You electrify
Your light making waves
From below the deep
Lapis lapis lapis lazuli
You wash over me
Like a bright orange glow
Over Lavender Bay spiked with
Lapis lapis lapis lazuli

Semiprecious by The Serviettes
Tried to talk to you last night
Do this properly, do this right
But I'm a coward, so I wrote you this letter
To explain why I believe that I can do better
Wait
That's too harsh
I'll tear up what I've got and go back to the start
I don't want to hurt you
And I don't want you to hurt me physically
But you will always be precious to me
You need to find someone who makes you feel
Like Bowie's backing vocals on Satellite of Love
He and Mick Robson sound just like
A couple of angels sent from heaven above
But you won't get that reference even though
I've told you so many times you need
To listen to Transformer by Lou Reed
But you never did I guess its symptomatic
Of why our relationship has always been static
Stop, start again
Wouldn't we be better off if we were just friends?
Its not you
Its me
But that's too clichéd, obviously
And you will always be precious to me
Always be precious to me
Always be precious
Well maybe not precious
But definitely semiprecious to me
Tried to talk to you last night
Do this properly, do this right
But I'm a coward, so I wrote you this letter

Hot mess, cool cat
Been there, scorned that
Hand made, boutique
Who cares, un-unique
Silver tongue, razor wit
Catching shade, throwing fits
So bored and so boring
Top marks but who's scoring
No spark just dull roaring
It's draining but the drinks keep pouring
semiprecious
semiprecious
Bad look
No matter how you dress it up
semiprecious
semiprecious
you don't not care
but you don't care much
You love the debate
The ego won’t deflate
Can’t keep you in check
You really left the place a wreck
You hate it, and they love it
In your head you exist above it
Sooner or later you’re gonna trip down
Sooner or later or right about now

‘Til the rope
Settled around your neck
But it’s in vogue, spread detest

Carnelian, lapis lazuli
Shiny little treasures
Bloodstone, sunstone, moonstone
Multicolored, semiprecious
Multi -- I like the streams of dreamy green in malachite
Colored -- Layers of cool and milky blue amazonite
Semi -- Snowflake obsidian, the little specks of white
Precious -- Oh, my semiprecious
Delicate and tender
Pearls and beads of amber
Onyx, fluorite, fluorite
Rose quartz, rose quartz and apatite
Multi -- Jasper, the purest evening sun I've ever seen
Colored -- And the surreal haze of green aventurine
Semi -- There's a whole rainbow to be found in tourmaline
Precious -- Oh, my semiprecious
Oh, my semiprecious
Garnet, andesine, rhodonite, aquamarine

V1
When I met my sweetie I could tell she was a boony
we settled down and always viewed our bunny friends with smiles
So when we were presented with a rabbit opportun-y
We hopped at once to watch the little furries for awhile
Chorus 1
Precious Rabbits oh so sweet
In your little cage so neat
We just love you very much
so please don't run away from our touch
V2
We got the cage home and we realized it was really stinky
But a couple hours and we had really cleaned their coop
We put them back in oh so fresh and hoped to see some binkies
but they would only run around and fill the place with poop
Chorus 2
Precious Rabbits settle down
Night time's not for spazzing around
We still love you through it all
But how did you manage to get pee on the wall?
V3
Well maybe if they're house trained we can remedy that smell
We'll get a bigger cage and liven up their lives in turn
But with more space and bunny toys they only started fighting
And now they're separated 'til they learn.. to behave (SNIP SNIP)
Chorus 3
Precious Rabbits must you fight?
We'll pay for surgery but don't you die!
A few more weeks we'll try once more
And check out our new broom to sweep up the floor (floor of poop)
Final Chorus
Precious Rabbits fur so fluff
I can’t say I’m coo coo for your puffs
Over all you mean no harm
But you belong in a barn
Yes you belong in a barn
When I met my sweetie I could tell she was a boony

They told me
You better act right
Stand up straight, tits out
And keep your knees tight
Hey sunshine
Don’t ever be sad
Bottle that shit up
Until your dead
Who pays for it?
Who pays for it?
Who’s gonna pay for it?
I’ve been shoved over every line
Out of bounds into overtime
A third place trophy, left to rust
Forgotten and semi precious
Always help
But never act proud
Please speak softly
You’re getting too loud
Know the answer
Dumb it down
Have a social drink
But don’t drown
Who pays for it?
Who pays for it?
Who’s gonna pay for it?

Semiprecious
by Crown Shy
Do you tell her that she's dying?
Is it right for her to know?
Six months or so of freedom
Before it all begins to go?
We paused the world for a while
That's what it felt like for a year
But all the time bombs went on ticking
Even if I didn't want to hear
And I didn't make the most of it
I could have listened, could have changed
I washed my hands of all the hard stuff
And lost a year to single days
They could have been
So precious
So precious
I got the message from my cousin
About the will, about the house
About the time she has remaining
And when her money would run out
But I didn't make the most of it
I could have listened, could have changed
I washed my hands of all the hard stuff
And lost a year to single days
They could have been
Semiprecious
Semiprecious
She forgot the word for pencil
Called corn kernels "yellow O's"
Is this a secret we should swallow?
Is it cruel for her to know?
And I didn't make the most of it
I could have listened, could have changed
I washed my hands of all the hard stuff
And lost a year to single days
That could have been
Semiprecious
Semiprecious
They slipped away
Semiprecious
Semiprecious
And all the words
Semiprecious
Semiprecious
That slowly fade
Semiprecious
Semiprecious
I feel ashamed
Semiprecious
Semiprecious
But not enough to change
Semiprecious
Do you tell her that she's dying
Just so she can be afraid?
As all the words go wafting skywards
From the wounds inside her brain
Or should we leave the last to remain
Semiprecious

I could have listened, could have changed
I washed my hands of all the hard stuff
And lost a year to single days
They could have been
Semiprecious
Semiprecious
She forgot the word for pencil
Called corn kernels "yellow O's"
Is this a secret we should swallow?
Is it cruel for her to know?
And I didn't make the most of it
I could have listened, could have changed
I washed my hands of all the hard stuff
And lost a year to single days
That could have been
Semiprecious
Semiprecious
They slipped away
Semiprecious
Semiprecious
And all the words
Semiprecious
Semiprecious
That slowly fade
Semiprecious
Semiprecious
I feel ashamed
Semiprecious
Semiprecious
But not enough to change
Semiprecious
Do you tell her that she's dying
Just so she can be afraid?
As all the words go wafting skywards
From the wounds inside her brain
Or should we leave the last to remain
Semiprecious
Semiprecious

Re: Nur Ein XVI - Semiprecious
Semiprecious - Heid
I never thought I'd pack my bags
And take the journey home
To face the aunts and uncles, crying,
"Lord, how you have grown"
Climbing up the stairs whose creaks remain unchanged in tone
Thoughts formerly foreign to me once again unfold
Walking home again
Walking home again
(repeated)
I stepped into my bedroom, left undusted, overgrown
And opened up my childhood box of semiprecious stones
The commonest of moments meant more than I could've known,
I wonder, how could something universal make me feel alone
Walking home again
Walking home again
Walking home again
(Repeated)
Walking home
I never thought I'd pack my bags
And take the journey home
To face the aunts and uncles, crying,
"Lord, how you have grown"
Climbing up the stairs whose creaks remain unchanged in tone
Thoughts formerly foreign to me once again unfold
Walking home again
Walking home again
(repeated)
I stepped into my bedroom, left undusted, overgrown
And opened up my childhood box of semiprecious stones
The commonest of moments meant more than I could've known,
I wonder, how could something universal make me feel alone
Walking home again
Walking home again
Walking home again
(Repeated)
