Pareidolia
by Moss Palace
I can feel a rolling thunder
Reaching out across the waves
Daring me to slip under
To the kindness of a grave
In the ashes, thought I saw you
You were torn apart and broken
Curling in the space between us
Vanishing behind the smoke
And if I let you go
Will that the be the end of it
Will you come back to me
To begin again
I can see you in the moon
Kiss your silver cheek
When I know you’re looking back
I forget how to speak
Slipping through the spaces
Memories long wasted
Time elapsing traces
Of a life created
When I let you go
Will that the be the end of it
Will you come back to me
To begin again
Hush, now hush
I don’t want to say goodbye
Hush, now hush
I don’t want to say goodbye
When I let you go
Will that the be the end of it
Will you come back to me
To begin again

pareidolia
pareidolia
when your brain is making sounds
out of nothing at all
out of nothing at all
pareidolia
pareidolia
when you think you’re going crazy
but you’re really making sense of your environment
your brain is struggling
to interpret what it hears
pareidolia
pareidolia
wish I’d known about you when I was growing up
pareidolia
pareidolia
pareidolia
pareidolia
pareidolia
pareidolia
pareidolia
I think I’m hearing things
I think I’m seeing things
it’s not really there
I think I’m hearing things
I think I’m seeing things
it’s not really there

Spoiler
I have had pareidolia my whole life, but mostly the audio kind. I used to think I was going insane because I always heard a song in the noise of the air conditioner, for example. (Btw I recorded some A/C noise with the thought of actually singing the song I sometimes still hear in it, but of course it suddenly deserted me when I sat down to make the music for pareidolia the song. Or maybe I can only hear the A/C song IRL, not on the recording - or when I'm falling asleep. Like a ghost?? I dunno.
Anyway, I ran Omni through my new pedal board (thanks Nivs!! ) for both drum sound (again from Omni) and actual played notes - I used my Whammy pedal extensively to really spindle and mutilate the sound as much as possible. Then I sang extemporaneously over those two tracks. Then I threw all three into GarageBand, took my field recordings and used them like instruments to complement the music I had already made.

Nick Soma - Pareidolia
Field recording of birdsong (intro and outro) and noises at the Linz, Austria train station including a train arriving at the station (bridge/guitar solo)
Even as a child
They were always with me
They are in my sight
Everywhere I go
I can't look away
Gotta inspect the structure
And before too long
A face is gonna show
Too late to undo it now
I have to live with it somehow
I see a face in everything around
In every tree and house they can be found
And when I hear the breeze
It seems to whisper to me
And the rustling leaves
They seem to speak
Every sight and sound
Is oddly familiar
It's been getting worse
And the outlook's bleak
Sometimes it's hard for me to bear
To perceive what isn't there
I see a face in everything around
In every wall and cloud they can be found
I hear my name in every little sound
They're gonna haunt me right into the ground
Sometimes it's hard for me to bear
To perceive what isn't there

They call out my name with every little sound
They're gonna haunt me right into the ground

Balance Lost
Radiator grilles and pelican crossings
Are tricking my brain to feel
There's somebody watching
Now we're seeing different things
Cos we're using different eyes
Could you be tripping?
Or am I?
Trying to read the signs
Trying to read the air
I can see there's nothing there
Looking in my cornflakes
Has something disappeared
Maybe it was never there
What did they mean
When they said it happened for a reason
What have the seen
Do they know something I'm missing?
Now we're seeing different things
Cos we're using different eyes
Could you be tripping?
Or am I?
Trying to read the signs
Trying to read the air
I can see there's nothing there
Looking in my cornflakes
Has something disappeared
Maybe it was never there
Trying to read the circles
Trying to read the squares
I can see there's nothing there
Looking in your scriptures
Has something disappeared
Maybe it was never there
