Nur Ein XVI - Pareidolia

SPOILER
SPOILER_SHOW
Had to get this one written and recorded quickly last night due to other commitments this week, I think it's turned out okay. It's about a malevolent looking stain I saw on a seat on the Glasgow Subway a couple years back, and about how paranoid I feel using the subway at the moment during the pandemic, and combining those two things and making that half-remembered rusty brown face-shaped stain a mascot for my COVID anxieties.

Field recording of the COVID safety tannoy announcement at Ibrox Subway Station
Pareidolia - The Lowest Bitter

stain on the subway seat,
are you looking at me?
twisted face in that rusty brown
are you looking at me?

enemy, sat across
blemish upon upholstery
I see him leer at me, I see, I fear

I know it's only in my mind,
I know it's just a trick,
I know that there's a word for this
but I can't remember what it is

I keep seeing evil everywhere,
keep seeing illness everywhere
paranoia, pareidolia
I keep seeing omens everywhere
my eyes are liars, liars
I keep seeing evil everywhere,
keep seeing illness everywhere
paranoia, pareidolia
and the stain on the seat across from me
is the shape of a face spewing disease
oh god

I keep seeing evil everywhere,
keep seeing illness everywhere
paranoia, pareidolia
I keep seeing omens everywhere
my mind's a liar, liar
I keep seeing evil everywhere,
keep seeing illness everywhere
paranoia, pareidolia
and the stain on the seat across from me
is the shape of a face spewing disease
oh god

I keep seeing evil everywhere,
keep seeing illness everywhere
paranoia, pareidolia
I keep seeing omens everywhere

SPOILER
SPOILER_SHOW
Field recording: 2021-05-17, taken on the grounds of the Mendota Mental Health Institute in Madison, WI, where Ed Gein, "The Butcher of Plainfield," died on July 26, 1984.
The main motif that recurs in electric piano and ukulele was taken from the song of the birds heard in the field recording (Northern Cardinals, I think?)--finding patterns in nature.
The lyrics approach pareidolia from two angles: the serial killer believing his victims resemble people but are not, and the serial killer himself resembling a normal person when going only by appearances.
In the shed
The Butcher of Plainfield
Washes his hands
In the porcelain basin
He lays out the pattern
Begins his tracing
It's funny how
She looked just like a person

Pareidolia
Two eyes and a smile, but it's just an illusion
Pareidolia
Two eyes and a smile, who do you think you're fooling?

A face in the clouds
A face in the mirror
If you put on your gown
You can start disappearing
But if I was a man
I think I'd feel safer
Walking alone
In quiet places

Pareidolia
Two eyes and a smile, but it's just an illusion
Pareidolia
Two eyes and a smile, who do you think you're fooling?

Pareidolia
- Frankie and the Mountweasels

I saw Pope Gregory II in a plate of pork and beans
And a smiling Virgin Mary in the crotch of my blue jeans
There’s a bloodstain on the carpet, looks like Elvis in a hat
And I swear that my new toilet brush is Yasser Arafat
But I don’t see her anymore
I got the Pareidolia Cure
I don’t see her anymore

There’s a magpie at the back door quoting Genesis 14
And my tumble dryer plays the surfing hits of Jan & Dean
The buzzing in my head is like the Buddha chanting Zen
And when I play Ed Sheeran backwards I hear “kill and kill again”
But I don’t hear her anymore
My treatment’s working out for sure
I don’t hear her anymore

I no longer see her face in every crowd
Nor her milk-white breasts above me in the soft cumulus clouds
My visions now lack that kind of specificity
Yeah sure, I’m still in the dumps
But now at least I can go and take a shit without her there,
I just see little, shiny, brown, floating, Donald Trumps

Deities - whoever’s holier
Thank you for my pareidolia
It's a fact obsession for someone
Can come and take control of ya
Man I love my pareidolia
More than pasta Aglio e Olia
It is so much fun
It is like watching Pele score a goalia
Dance on the streets or on a polia
Sing and drink some alcoholia
Pareidolia, pareidolia
Visions to comfort your soulia

I know I can’t play; they say I can’t sing.
My clumsy hands can’t pluck the strings.
I never learned the names of the piano keys,
So when I try to play, it’s always in C.
But I hear music in my quavering voice,
Where others say they just hear noise.
Are the melodies I hear just an illusion;
Are my hopes just a delusion?

I know I can’t sing like a bear or an owl.
It just comes out in a coyote howl.
Some may think I sound like trash,
But I’m not in it for the cash.
I hear music in my quavering voice,
Where others say they just hear noise.
Is nothing pleasant in these words I blab?
Is more music in the hydraulics lab?

Do I sound worse than water and turbines?
Does this sound good if you drink enough bourbon?

It’s hard to keep my skin so think
When I get reviews like Citizen Dick.
I can write a beat but can’t keep time;
I’ve got no pitch to go with these rhymes.
But I hear music in my quavering voice,
Where others say they just hear noise.
I’ll bang my head on the gatekeepers
And keep on howling into Reaper.

Budget Bears

I wanna get lost in media
but curse my indecision
the same thing happens every time
I use my television
so many ways to waste my life
but in each one I reckon
that every frame contains your face
and there’s twenty-four per second

You’re not really there, of course
but something in me cracked
I see you in an explosion
or on George Clooney’s back

I thought I could drown you out but
I swear I heard your voice on the radio
You know that it’s beyond doubt
I'm sure I saw your face in a video
So what the hell am I to do
In everything I still see you

Music fills the empty void
but it sticks in my throat
when I can hear you whisper
in the gaps between the notes
saying things that only you
would ever think to say
and so I find my shaking hand
unable to press play

I know these sounds aren’t really
in the songs that I am playing
but bouncing round the chambers
of my broken brain

Pareidolia - Brown Word and the Big Whine

Had to quit my job at the machine room
Tiny faces in the dials staring at me
Murmur of plans I can barely discern
In the humming and the thrumming
Of the engines as they turn

I'm picking up something from nothing
See it playing out in the shape of the clouds
Neighbor's dog is barking in code
If I defy the patterns then the world might explode
Well docs gave it a name and they say it's benign
But just in case I'm gonna take it as a sign
I'm picking up something from nothing
And I can't stop reading between the lines

Had to stop shopping at the supermarket
Shadow people stealing just out of sight
All the lettuce looks like people I know
And the meeping and the beeping
Of the checkouts tells me so

I'm picking up something from nothing
See it playing out in the shape of the clouds
Neighbor's dog is barking in code
If I defy the patterns then the world might explode
Well docs gave it a name and they say it's benign
But just in case I'm gonna take it as a sign
I'm picking up something from nothing
And I can't stop reading between the lines

Pareidolia
They call it pareidolia

The electric outlet isn't surprised
The face on Mars is just a moutainous rise
The building next door isn't looking at me
I'm not hearing secrets from the washing machine

SPOILER_SHOW

Well I did not expect to get this in. I have struggled with it all week and was close to just throwing in the towel but on Friday I decided to hell with it I'm just going to have a go and throw as much as it I can. Admittedly I just went preset mad with it but I really like the result. I have taken a risk, I didn't put the title in the song at all. I just felt it didn't need it and slipping it in somewhere was unnecessary and would cheapen it. I think I have taken the challenge on and that's what I'm going with.

The premise of the lyrics started off with, I miss you, I see you face in other people (quick fetch a bucket). However, I decided to go dark. I have been reading some crime thrillers and following the Song Maps book I read by Simon Hawkins I went for the role map. The first is from the perspective of a caught kidnapper, sitting in his cell longing to see his victim again and seeing their face in all they see. The second verse is about the victim reliving the moments and fearing the captor, seeing their face in everyone they see.

In my attempt to become a better song writer I have also been reading Writing Better Lyrics by Pat Pattison. The idea that caught my eye was the idea that length of the stresses in a phrase and rhyming scheme decide the stability, so get rid of a few stresses and remove things where people expect rhymes will make it unstable. I removed some rhymes in the final cut to give it that effect.

Just to make things interesting I decided to employ a technique I learnt from last Nur Ein where you mix time signatures. I can't remember the fancy pants name for it though.

Finally, the backing vocals were done in a field, I went for a walk with my trusty Tascam DP-006, found a field and sang away.

If you watched that, I am very very sorry!
I peer out of a window
waiting at the door
I can't decide why I do this

I feed the obsessions
day by day
longing for a moment
that's long since
washed away

when they turn around
then I tell myself
that I'll see your face
instead of someone else

I cower in the corner
looking for an out
I find little comfort
in the walls that surround

I feel these eyes
burning
twisting the knife
and cherishing it all

when they turn around
then I tell myself
that I'll see your face
instead of someone else

when you turn around

Third Cat - Pareidolia

when your face slips away
i get down on my knees
to drink you off the floor
down here i think i found something more

seeing patterns everywhere
even when there's nothing there
hearing voices in the air
even when there's no one there
even when there's no one there

when this place gets too weird
i feel lost and confused
seems like she looks at me
i know i can't truly trust what i see

seeing patterns everywhere
even when there's nothing there
hearing voices in the air
even when there's no one there
even when there's no one there

(yes, that's another numbers station in there)

Go to sleep
Don't be scared
That's not a monster in the corner
Just a chair

Hall light's on
Door is cracked
Closet's checked for psychopaths
Who attack

There's a face in the clouds
And it's leering at me
There's a monster in the yard
That you say is a tree

I wish you could see
Everything
Just like I do

There's a face in the clouds
And it's leering at me
There's a monster in the yard
That you say is a tree

I wish you could see
Everything
Just like I do

Can you hear the symphony outside?
The rustling leaves play on your mind
Voices whisper words that no one has spoken before
The music of the birds and bees
The swaying trees dance to a beat
That no one programmed
It's all out here for free
So I'll steal it

It's the art of pareidolia
It's the art of pareidolia
It's the art of pareidolia

Can you see the writing on the wall?
Is it the way the shadows fall?
I read a message so it must be for me
Do you fear the faces in the dark?
Expressive eyes--A work of art drawn by no one's hand
Inspires and maddens the world

It's the art of pareidolia
It's the art of pareidolia
It's the art of pareidolia

Pareidolia by The Serviettes

We're just ghosts that don't know it yet
Wrap up your hopes
Extract your dreams
Replace them with regrets

Up in the sky above us
The clouds they coalesce
Into a vision of the daughter that you never had

Licked my wounds so many times before
I can't taste
Can't taste the blood any more
Shadows dancing on the wall
Assume the human form

I'm still here
I need a sign
The stimuli intertwine
Swear I heard the muttered sound of words
Within the songs of the birds

Burn the witch
If you really must
Just don't be surprised
If your soil still turns to dust

My field recording is from a six second video I took not long before I left Australia and moved 17,445km to Ireland. I was working with my best friend, and we were moving the entire contents of the art shop we worked at to a new location. The sound is a set of empty shelves being let loose down a set of stairs. Writing this song made me sad.

I don’t know where to turn
I don’t know where to look
You’re in the art on my walls
You’re a line in every book

I see you painted on the sides
Of a Grecian Urn
You’re in the smoke that drifts away
As my matches burn

You drove me to the airport
Now you’re driving me away
You don’t call, you don’t text
You don’t indicate what’s next

Magai tinana I miss you
Magai tinana I miss you
And I don’t know anymore if you miss me too
But I, I fucken miss you

I don’t know where to turn
I don’t know how to start
You’re the voice in my head
When I watch my neighbour park

Your t-shirt’s in the masks I made
That probly saved my life
And when I sit down to escape
I see you in Riker

You drove me to the airport
Now you’re driving me away
I don’t know what to think since
You turned on your blinkers

Magai tinana I miss you
Magai tinana I miss you
And I don’t know anymore if you miss me too
But I, I fucken miss you

And when I look around
This room I just can’t let go of ya
Every single thing in here
Holds a trace of pareidolia

Magai tinana I miss you
Magai tinana I miss you
And I don’t know anymore if you miss me too
But I, I, I
I fucken miss you

Field recording: the Tesla factory in Fremont CA, stamping section.

From the day you took this job
One of the banished smoking slobs
I had always been your only confidant
Down there between your feet,
Right below your shabby seat
No clearer face a real life friend could want
You told me of your lusts
(I could not betray your trust)
You muttered disappointments every break
With me you hatched your plans
Each terrible mistake
Call me Clyde,
I’m always on your side
Call me Clyde,
I’m always on your sidewalk

As long as I was there
I kept you from despair
Everybody needs an ear to talk to
Your desperate fantasy
Was just between you and me
And daily life was something you could walk through
Till the day when cruel fate
Threw poison on your plate
When the higher ups closed off the smoking section
For greater public health
They doomed their population
Call me Clyde
Still smiling on the side
Call me Clyde
Still smiling on the sidewalk

They call it pareidolia
We can call it an oasis
When loneliness takes hold of ya
You may need those friendly faces

The police were running ‘round
And they saw me on the ground
They told them it was where you did your thinking
And they took you straight downtown
And you made no verbal sound
My lips were also sealed, my left eye winking
Call me Clyde
I’ll keep it deep inside
Call me Clyde
I’ll keep it deep in sidewalk

This one was fun and a bit challenging to put together. I ended up with this story about hurting someone you care about and going mad trying to process what you've done, seeing reminders of that person and the pain you caused them everywhere.
My field recordings were sounds of frogs on a lake at night that I collected on two different occasions while walking with my mom.
I can't take back
Last year's impact
Althe ways I left you scarred
It takes patience
Time and space
To start to take away the marks

Said "I'm sorry"
And I meant it
Now I've got to let you be
But I still see
Wounds I caused you
In the static on TV

Classic pareidolia
I see you, but I know it's just
Imagination
My creation
Of your face
In empty places

I swear I know it's
Pareidolia

Wicked whispers
Trickle inward
Tricking listeners like me
Friends assure me
Time's a fixer
"just keep wishing, they'll recede"

classic pareidolia
I see you, but I know it's just
imagination
my creation
of your face
in empty places

I swear I know it's just
pareidolia

Here in darkness
echoes starkly
beckon me toward recompense
cracked reflection
of transgressions
whose effects I cannot mend

Oh jesus, oh god, I am not going crazy
I know what I did, and I dealt with it, baby
and yet I can't seem to get your image out of my head

it's classic pareidolia
I see you, but I know it's just
imagination
my creation
of your face
in empty places

I swear I know it's
pareidolia

This song is about Karl Koch, a West German hacker who hacked various entities such as NASA, the Pentagon, and Los Alamos, selling secrets to the KGB for money and drugs. He confessed and received amnesty. He went missing on May 23, at age 23, and his remains were later found burnt in the woods, in a circle of burnt grass. The death was declared a suicide.

The rain, thunder, and bird noises were recorded outside my home. The recorded phone message at the end was taken from Ken's answering machine, and stopped and started erratically, as it does in the song, in the original message. Sounded spooky, so we threw it in.
the talking heads inside the TV
speak straight to him in code
the moonlight shining through the branches
spelling words out on the road

still looking for what it all could mean
nukes, spooks, computer screens
and messages from the KGB

in the clouds
and on the moon
obscured by lights
who hides the truth
he lit the match
or was it you?

which shadows after him are real?
will sorry be enough?
leaving work for the last time
on the 23rd of the month

still looking for what it all could mean
a circle of flames among the trees
and something about the number 23

in the clouds
and on the moon
obscured by lights
who hides the truth
ciphers slipped
into the news
triangles
and phone booths

in the clouds
and on the moon
obscured by lights
who hides the truth
he lit the match
or was it you?
I am definitely too square for how experimental this is, but I can imagine that if I was in the right state of mind, the section starting at 2:20 might transport me to another dimension - jeffhenderson

Governing Dynamics
A watchful eye is what you’ve got
Overhead well under notice
This awareness weighs so heavy
Most can’t say they’re this devoted

Get your prophet on the screen
And the voice over the system
Light of truth touching so sweet
Why would anyone resist them

Points of data linked by thread
Forest green and spilled blood red
Nothing’s funny, just nothing’s happening quite yet
You’ll have the last laugh, no one listened when you said

“You people haven’t done the homework
Skipped out on the reading
Fell asleep in class
You’re blind to
The strings tug you sideways
Emerging from the shadow
Of the smoking looking glass”

Got it all under surveillance
Watching from the fortress
Checking off the boxes
Logging every near miss

The masses lining up for mourning
No sympathy no sway
They should have heard your warning
Surely hell is on the way

Your eyes are wide
Sliding past the stations
Prepared and terrified
Well within expectations

“You people haven’t done the homework
Didn’t do the reading
Fell asleep in class
You’re blind to
The strings tug you sideways
Emerging from the shadow
Of the smoking looking glass”

We don’t see it like you see it
Believe it with your bulletproof conviction
It’s a fine line, betting on a long shot
Dotting lines to distant dots
And making a god from fiction

Something in the water
Something in your mind
When the hair on the back of your neck stands up
What do you find

At the end of the tunnel
At the end of the line
You get a creeping feeling
Maybe it’s your time

I know you see his face
Up and everywhere
In every shadow and
in every stare
You’re not paranoid
You just “want to be aware”
But you and I know that
What seems may not be there

And every movement
Triggers an alarm
Every inconvenience is
A call to do you harm

You seize up even
At the smallest sound
Every expression is
Your attacker come unbound

I know you see his face
Up and everywhere
In every shadow and
in every stare
You’re not paranoid
You just “want to be aware”
But you and I know that
You can’t live running scared

Officer, there's a man at the end of the platform. He's been following me. I think he's dangerous. No, no, I don't know him. But he's dangerous. You need to check this out. Don't, don't, don't touch me. Don't touch me. There's a man at the end of the platform. He was right there. You need to go check this out. I'm telling you, he was right there. Please.... Intro
Sometimes when you look in the mirror
You see things that you don’t want to see
And they’re not things you didn’t know about
They’re things you didn’t want to face
You’ve spent so long trying to see things in yourself that just weren’t there
Or at least convince other people to see them
It’s like lying in your bed, staring at the ceiling
Making a whole world out of the shapes you see
Watching the characters interact and wondering what it’d be like to live in your ceiling world
But eventually you realize there’s nothing more than texture on the ceiling
And you’re still lying alone in your empty room

Chorus
When you are sleeping in you bed
And all you see is dark
You face the images of
Who you really are

Verse
Quick hold back another day
Always watch what you say
Keep that look you wanna see
Don’t face that reality

You’re not changing now
It’s been far too long
So hold on some how
Before it’s all gone

Turnaround
But I am what you see
Yes I am what you see
Does it matter that it
Is illusionary?

That’s the question I’m asking
No I’m not try to pass as a phony
I know me now just let me be

Chorus
When you are sleeping in you bed
And all you see is dark
You face the images of
Who you really are

Pareidolia (Psychic Barista)
by Boffo Yux Dudes

Reading tea leaves
Like an ancient tome
Looking for patterns
In the swirling foam

Everyone believes
That they’re not alone
Searching for ghosts
You can’t use your phone

You’re coming into money
You’re going on a trip
I’m gonna find you a honey
Don’t forget to tip

I’m the psychic barista
Sometimes Sweet, sometime low
Pulling magic from chaos
Come see my show

I’m the psychic barista
Master of pareidolia
Taking rich peoples’ money
I’ll cure your melancholia

Am I psychic?
A magic man?
Am I a huckster?
Or a charlatan?

I’ll drain you dry
Like you knew I would
What does it matter
If I make you feel good?

You’re going to win that promotion
You’re going to be a star
Your deepest wishes will come true
Just put your money in the jar

I’m the psychic barista
Drink down your smoke and mirrors
With every dollar you give me
Your fate is getting clearer

I’m the psychic barista
Master of pareidolia
Taking rich peoples’ money
I’ll cure your melancholia

I'm the psychic barista
Pareidolia
I'm the psychic barista
Pareidolia
I'm the psychic barista
Pareidolia
I'm the psychic barista

Well this escalated quick
I wish I had a second to
reflect on what just happened

Last week I was feeling fine
But now I’m left questions why
I partake in this foolishness

I set aside some time to walk
Outside, myself, with just my thoughts
I focus on what’s important
And you know

I see your face everywhere
Doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo
I see your face everywhere
Doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo
I see your face everywhere

Deadlines drama diligence
Drinking to delirious
I wonder what to do about this

Feelings bottled down inside
Not because I want to hide
But talking is not effective

I feel the wind, it’s comforting
I hear your voice as the birds sing
The clouds look so familiar

I see your face everywhere
Doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo
I see your face everywhere
Doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo
I see your face everywhere

Doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo
I see your face everywhere
Doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo
I see your face everywhere
Doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo
I see your face everywhere

Pareidolia
by WreckdoM

There's a friendly water stain,
It's always staring at me.
It's always whispering,
Forever telling me things.
The cheerful floor grate
A never-ending smiling face.
We have a laugh,
We celebrate!

Surrounded by my friends
Pareidolia
Never alone again
Pareidolia

I no longer go to work
So the floorboard says.
I can eat the trash
Save my waste and scabs.
The laundry sells me speed,
We never go to sleep,
The cobwebs are singing,
We dance until we scream.

I'm having so much fun
Pareidolia
I cannot leave my home
Pareidolia

The clouds outside taunt me,
The trees flip me the bird.
I'm getting dirty looks
From that pile of dirt.
Cracks in the sidewalk,
A grimace every one,
They all call me out.
They are out for blood.

Never heard from again
Pareidolia
Surrounded by my friends
Pareidolia

Pareidolia
By Mandibles

The sun is high
There is laughter on the wind
And where am I
Above the playful din
In my bedroom
Where the friends that surround me
Are the faces that I see
They come and go as they please,
My friends in the trees

They come to play
To fill the wiling hours
Then fade away
And I atop my tower
In my bedroom
Find the patterns that they leave
As they hide among the leaves
They come and go as they please,
My friends in the trees

Friendships left behind fall out of memory
And gradually I start to lose the faces for the trees
The forest is a back drop to the years that pass me by
Yet I never wonder why

Now as I work
The blue-lit numbers glaring
And it hurts
My eyes are strained from staring
In my office
The window draws me near
A buried memory appears…
They come and go as they please,
My friends in the trees
