Nur Ein XVI - Drag Me Around

Post by thelowestbitter »

I'll admit to being confused by what you wanted with this challenge, and I think it's resulted in a confused lyric that only barely makes sense to me, and also requires people to remember my first two songs, which I realise is asking a lot when there's 24 others in the competition. So I'm hoping that those judges who aren't reading liner notes won't mark me too harshly if the lyrics don't make a lot of sense to them. They still might not make sense after reading the notes.

Liner notes:
SPOILER
SPOILER_SHOW
This song is about my broken brain. I think I have a bit of an unhealthy fixation on things that are out of my control, wanting to try and impose myself upon them, and that comes through in a lot of my lyrics - whether that's feeling guilt about things that I can't directly effect and have nothing to do with me (as in my first song Semiprecious, about the exploitation of workers and more specifically the Myanmar jade trade), or a near constant fixation on death and illness (as in my second song Pareidolia, about freaking out riding the subway during the pandemic). When I write songs about these sorts of things it feels very narcissistic, like taking these massive issues or concerns that effect everyone and saying "but how does this effect ME?". This song is basically trying to capture my snide inner monologue that constantly calls me out for being an narcissistic idiot who things he's the protagonist of existence, while also undermining me at every turn with anxiety, fear, self-hatred and all the other fun stuff a broken brain is wont to do. I liked the idea of this voice "dragging me around", pulling me between all these different negative emotions and mental health crises.

The first verse directly comments on my first song - mocking the idea that because I read an article about jade mining I'm suddenly some human rights expert, with a couple of punny callbacks in "he really puts the me in mine" and "some jaded arsehole". The second verse references my subway anxieties from my round one song, "sat on the Inner Circle seeing things that aren't there" (the inner circle is a line on the Glasgow subway), and the "paranoia, pareidolia" hook from that song is echoed here in the "paranoia, panic attack" lyric.

Hopefully it makes some sense. As I say I found this challenge a real struggle and hope I haven't completely gotten the wrong end of the stick, but to my ears this would work as a linking track between my first and second song.
Drag Me Around - The Lowest Bitter

Boy read an article in TIME,
suddenly he's Mr Human Rights
he really puts the Me in Mine
some jaded arsehole, a tourist in less fortunate lives

if it helps, he feels guilty all the time
if it helps, he knows he's a hypocrite
if it helps, he has this voice that's always chattering
an awful sound, it says "drag him around"

anxiety
self-hatred
insecurity
drag me around
paranoia
panic attack
neuroses
drag me around

sat on the Inner Circle,
seeing things that aren't there
with this messed up inner monologue
circling his head

if it helps, you know he's feeling terrified
if it helps, he knows he's a narcissist
if it helps, he has this voice that's always chattering
an awful sound, it says "drag him around"

anxiety
self-hatred
insecurity
drag me around
paranoia
panic attack
neuroses
drag me around

if it helps, he knows he's a hypocrite
if it helps, he knows he's a narcissist
drag me around

paranoia
panic attack
neuroses
drag me around
anxiety
self-hatred
insecurity
drag me around

So my take on this challenge was more to do with the lyrics that the music. I think the music fits but it wasn't what I was going for. I wanted to write something that acts as a bridge lyrically. They way I saw it working is that I wrote Semiprecious about spending more than what you have and Paradjsdsda (I can never remember how to spell it so I mashed the keys) was about seeing the face of the victim through a captor in verse 1 and seeing the face of a captor through the victim in verse 2. I figured this song should be the demise of the captor in parakjladfjlh. The way I saw it was they guy has just got caught by the fuzz and is being taken away.
I am an outcast
I am a fraud
I spent more money
than I could ever afford
I am the reason
I am the truth
those painful memories
stuck inside of you

so I say

drag me around
then place down

I have no regrets
and will never resign
my only wish is that
I see you one last time
I feel your anguish
and I felt your pain
and now your anger
is all that remains

so I say

drag me around
then place down

the intro includes an echoing "kind of love" from the end of my round 0 song which morphs to better match "drag me around" ...the outro ends on the E-Em chord progression that starts my round 2 song (and includes the same field recording/vocal samples ... the vocal samples are mangled recordings of the word 'pareidolia' - these intros/outros connecting to the round 0 and round 2 songs are my attempt at completing the challenge. hopefully it's what you guys are looking for! - a little bonus link is I am thinking of my lyrics as a response to the "semiprecious" lyrics. ... one extra thing - there's a burbly synth thing from "pareidolia" that's heard on the intro (for just a bit) and again on the outro

My first song was about my balls. My second song was about my bumhole. This song is about my perineum.

Looks like I've nailed this liner notes business.
Neon reflections in your eyes
The windshield shows a vacant sky
That rains down nothing on the lives
Of the inhabitants
Yet somehow they seem satisfied
There's nothing you can show
That I've not seen before
I've lived a hundred lives
And there's yet more to be endured
Until I've had my time

So many dreams torn down
And so many cars burned out
When you drag me around this town

Lead me down this labyrinth
It's been an eternity since
These tunnels were my home
I used to know every inch
But now they're crumbling, overgrown
A long days walk into the night
Now you're the only point of light
Where once there were a hundred
Thousand fireflies

So many dreams torn down
And so many cars burned out
When you drag me around this town
You drag me around this town
So many dreams torn down
And so many cars burned out
When you drag me around this town

DENTED BENTO - Drag Me Around [shadow]

Chased the sun to California
Didn't stop, I kept on going
Living in a ghost world few can see
A ripped and faded memory

Limping barefoot over coral
Crashing nights on borrowed futons
Puppet in the wars of destiny
My tattered strings reminding me

I never know where I'll be tomorrow
I never know where I'll sleep tomorrow
A shadow in a shroud
Drag me around

Volunteered, so can't complain
Hiking through charred fields of sugar cane
Crawl through ruined bunkers, bloody knees
My tattered strings reminding me

CH

Drag me around
Drag me around
Drag me around

Semi-Precious = Lord of the Rigs. Frodo drives the semi to Motown, but declares himself the new Lord. Gollum gets the keys, and accidentally drives into the smelter, destroying the One Rig.

Pareidolia = sitting in a tropical garden, waiting for a sign. I was originally going to sing this in my "Opera Woman" voice, backed only with a cheap Casio keyboard.

SPOILER_SHOW
This song continues the narrative and themes of denial, avoidance, loss, and grief from "Semiprecious" (including echoing the "yellow O's" phrase) and anticipates the themes of fear, death, and mental illness from "Pareidolia" while touching on the meta-theme of institutionalization shared between the field recording taken at a mental hospital and my aunt's inevitable fate of having to die in a nursing home. The latest revelation this week (discovered in the course of trying to track down all the pieces of her estate in order to pay for her care) being that she wanted to have $17,000 in gold krugerrand coins from her inheritance set into concrete in the yard because she thought they were worthless baubles. Musically, "Semiprecious" was in C, this song is sort of in B, "Pareidolia" is sort of partly in A.
Gold coins in the sidewalk shining, scattered in the concrete, little yellow O's
Krugerrand windfall, she likes them because they're pretty. Is it useful to be pretty? I don't know
Mink coat in the Goodwill box, she's an animal lover, say goodbye to all the fox fur,
Diamond rings passed down from her mother never touched another finger, now they're gone

Drag me around
Carried on the current
Drag me around
Waiting for that moment
Drag me around
I don't want to be the one who does it
Drag me around
To witness everything she's losing

These days, she's full of paranoia, seeing faces in the windows, killers creeping round her door
The spies from Beijing have their tentacles everywhere, they're watching her computer through the USB ports
She's never been a person who relies on other people but this special kind of blankness settles down when she's alone
And we don't know how long she has or how we're going to pay for this but my father keeps on saying we've got to put her in a home

Drag me around
Branches in the storm
Drag me around
Until her mind is gone
Drag me around
I don't want to be the one who says it
Drag me around
To witness everything she's losing

Drag me around
Pull me into orbit
Drag me around
Everything seems foreign
Drag me around
I don't want to be the one who calls it
Drag me around
To witness everything she's losing

Okay, doing one of these liner note thingies. This song bridges the first two thematically as well as musically, incorporating similar sounds and instrumentation between the two. The 3 would be mixed to flow into one another on the album. The theme of this song picks up on the judgements of the "you" character in Semiprecious and deals here with the disillusion of being pretentiously dismissed by someone who was formerly held in esteem + increasing awareness of falsehood and illusion among others in the 'I' person's world. This will segue into Pareidolia when the 'I' character is increasingly reading into everything and seeing patterns and connections where there are none.
I used to think you were special
Put you on my pedestal
I used to think you were non-pretentious
Coming at it on the level
I used to think you were the flame to my moth
Until all of the thrill subsided
I can see I was a little niaive
Methinks I was a tad misguided

I dunno why I let you drag me around
You act like I ain't worthy
But you won't set me down
I dunno why you gotta drag me around
You oughtta crown me like a queen
But you kick me like a hound

I used to think I was on top of the world
I'm kinda drowning in this fakery
Thought I was made of sterner stuff
But now I'm not even sure what's real

Their words are dancing in the wind
But I no longer hear the music in them
I'm tracing patterns in the shifting sand
This semiprecious illusion isn't worth a damn

I dunno why I let you drag me around
You act like I ain't worthy
But you won't set me down
I dunno why I let you drag me around
You oughtta crown me like a queen
But you kick me like a hound

Everyone talking in ciphers
You're all faces in the clouds
Today is the day is the day
Everyone talking in ciphers
You're all faces in the clouds
Today is the day y'all stop dragging me around

"Semiprecious": Guy really likes trucking, even more that he likes his girlfriend.
"Drag Me Around": Guy gets disillusioned with trucking, moves to Detroit, hangs around with hipster artists, decides he wants to try to be a musician.
"Pareidolia": Guy's music is poorly received, but he vows to keep trying.
Headed west out of Reno over Donner Pass,
I knew that trip would be my last.
I called up Jenny to say goodbye;
Neither of us felt any need to cry.
I dropped off the truck and cashed my check,
No friends, no family, like Melchizedek.
I had no anchor and had no home,
Free to settle down or free to roam.
Drag me around, where you want me to go,
I’ll raise my sail and see where the wind blows.

Got a place in Detroit where the rent is cheap,
Got a job at Chrysler and an orange Jeep.
Still a few jobs haven’t gone offshore,
Repairing robots on the factory floor.
Free time on weekends and nights,
Going to farmers’ markets and open mikes.
I’m getting known in all the artists’ joints,
But I don’t feel welcome in Grosse Pointe.
Drag me around nighttime alleyways,
The stuff that thrives in urban decay.

It’s a different crowd what I left,
But they drink the same cans of Pabst.
No one cares if my shirts aren’t pressed,
And I can still wear my trucker hats.

One November night, the rain turned to snow;
I was sitting with hipsters, watching a show.
As I heard the notes reverberate,
I wanted not to listen, but to create.
I bought a guitar and rhyming dictionary,
Started scribbling lyrics on stationery.
I’ve got the guitar balanced on my knee.
Hey, how hard can this be?
Don’t drag me around until I learn to play;
But maybe you’ll see me on stage someday.

Budget Bears

Semi-convinced you saw me as a chain around your ankles
Though I aimed in vain to raise you on my shoulders
Summer's almost here, or it would be in most years
but somehow this one's only getting colder

Alerts on my phone of memories together
Nostalgic for the company and also for the weather

You didn't have to drag me around
If I was such a drag to be around
If I was holding you back
Thank you for cutting me some slack

Semi-detached, in decline and daydreaming of finer times
I swear the sun used to shine more brightly
now I could blame the chemicals, or these rose-tinted spectacles
I'm skeptical, but I guess it's more likely

That my brain and my camera, they usually agree
That the bad times and the rain are a waste of memory

You didn't have to drag me around
If I was such a drag to be around
If I was holding you back
Thank you for cutting me some slack

are things getting better?
is it getting warm?
or is this just the calm before the storm?

This song bridges the previous two songs by connecting their stories into one narrative. The speaker, who has just revisited their childhood home (in "Semiprecious"), now reflects on the emotional manipulation they experienced from their mother as a child. When they grow up, they find themself repeating the cycle, inflicting the same pain on their partner. It leads into "Pareidolia", in which the speaker tries to process the fact that they hurt someone they cared about deeply.

Wow this was challenging to do! It is one of the more eclectic songs I've done in a while, but ya know, it's done!
Back when I could count my Augusts on my hands
Back when I'd fall down more often than I'd stand
Figures towered over
and grabbed me by the arm
and leaned on me and told me,
"just be quiet, take the harm"

But it's fine, mother mine,
You can drag me around
Get relief
From your grief
I swear I won't make a sound
I'll spend 18 years assuring you that you've done nothing wrong,
But one thing you can be sure of
When I leave you, I'll be gone.

Now that I've gathered twice the Augusts as before
Lost track of little patterns
Stopped my hiding, locking doors.
You slept beneath my bedsheets,
I loved you as my own
We drew each other's daydreams, and I really thought I'd grown

One day you turned toward me,
Your jaw clenched pipe-wrench tight
Threw up your hands and told me,
"I'm far too tired to fight."

You said,
"It's fine, lover mine,
You can drag me around.
Take relief
From your grief,
I swear I won't make a sound.
I've spent nine full months assuring you that you did nothing wrong
But one thing I will swear to,
Tomorrow I'll be gone."

what have I done? what have i done? ....what have i done

Drag Me Around
by Max Bombast

You're always dragging me around
But on the days you can't be found
I run in place
You never answer when I call
When there's a problem I can't solve
Now I'm lost for days

When you arrive you've got a plan
I let you drive, I understand
It takes a leap of faith
Though I can't see the road ahead
You won't lead me down a dead end
With every step I take

I can't wait here for you to show
Or I'll stay silent 'til I'm old
No more words to say
So now I force myself to act
To take a step without a map
Admit I make mistakes

Now that I show up everyday
We tend to meet along the way
Like we're oldest friends
So now I drag myself around
And on the days you can't be found
I know we'll meet again

Down a melancholic tonic of indifferent
Positional transmission
Bouncing off insulated resistance
Flawless armor
Thoughtless charmer
Armchair general debater
Checkmate
You tried to play a player

I’m committed to this crime
Obvious waste of my time
Who am I trying to keep in line

I shouldn't let you drag me
I shouldn't let you drag me around
Same old game again
I know I never win
I shouldn't let you drag me around

I'm a catastrophic chronic stone thrower
Blood boil about your tin foil
Heat won't lower
Could you talk less
Could you think slower
Innocent “who me?”
Posture from a wind sower

When you reap your own whirlwind
Still surrounded by your friends
I did not once see your will ever bend

I shouldn't let you drag me
I shouldn't let you drag me around
Same old game again
I know I never win
I shouldn't let you drag me around

I shouldn't let you drag me
I shouldn't let you drag me around
I shouldn't let you drag me around

Free thinker, anti-social drinker
Love to tinker
With your casual war table
Still in a fortress
My slings and arrows
Did not once unstable

I shouldn't let you drag me
I shouldn't let you drag me around
I shouldn't let you drag me

I shouldn't let you drag me around

I shouldn't let you drag me
I shouldn't let you drag me around
I should be done with this
You know I can’t resist
I shouldn’t let you drag me around, around
I shouldn’t let you drag me around

DRAG ME AROUND
by Cavedwellers

(In which the striving fake-Rolex-wearer from Semiprecious becomes the new manager who shuts down Clyde’s murderous friend’s smoking section, as described In Pareidolia)

I know a guy who knew a guy
And now I’m on my way
Gonna trade my gold-tone counterfeit
For a genuine Day-Date
You’re gonna see some changes
There’s a new sheriff in town
What’s that smell? You cannot tell me
Smokers are still around?!

I’m gonna shut it down, shut it down
Fly your flag, I’ll cut it down
Another flag to drag around
To tread on and to trample down

Someone better know what’s best
And I’m afraid that’s me
And no authentic freedom
Suits these libertines
Who fill their veins with syrup
And their lungs are tarry-brown
They watch misinformation
Gonna shut this nonsense down

Shut it down, shut it down
Fly your flag, I’ll cut it down
Another flag to drag around
To tread on and to trample down

I’ll take this job by the throat
I’ll change the things that get my goat
My goodness gracious! Get in line
HR won’t save you, you are mine

Shut it down, shut it down
Fly your flag, I’ll cut it down
Another flag to drag around
To tread on and to trample down

Drag Me Around
by Moss Palace

I wait on the corner
Little sister, precious daughter
Crooked teeth, wicked ways
Smell of flesh and Tanqueray

Poor little broken man
“You’ll never drag me around”

I call the shots, I don’t say please
Just watch 'em burn on their knees
No regrets or consolation
Nevermind your salvation

Everyone takes a turn
“You’ll never drag me around”

When the night gets too long
And I feel the cold beyond
Loneliness few can stand
Will I reach out for his hand?

Keep coming back for more
“You’ll never drag me around”

Everyone takes a turn
“You’ll never drag me around”

Poor little broken man
“You’ll never drag me around”

Keep coming back for more
“You’ll never drag me around”

Nick Soma - Drag Me Around
SPOILER
SPOILER_SHOW
Warning: lengthy explanation follows.

So, I tried to meet the challenge in both a lyrical and musical way. First, the lyric. My Round 0 and Round 1 entries both have non-personal lyrics, and I decided that all three songs should have the same narrator, some guy named Karl, who has a slight obsession with semi-precious stones and frequently experiences pareidolia in an intense way. Karl's biggest fear is to be seen as weird, he just wants to be a regular normal guy which however, he obviously isn't. I wanted this song to have a central theme of its own, so I thought Karl might have some issues with sensory processing like I do - so this lyric is semi-autobiographical unlike the other two. To calm himself, Karl always keeps some gemstones in his pocket, but sometimes he forgets about that when under stress. The "healing touch" in the context of this song is, of course, not the touch of someone else, but Karl himself touching the stones.

Musically, I wanted this song to start out much like the first one and then gradually shift toward the sound of the second one via change in mood, instrumentation (note the organ in the last third) and modulation. It starts out in E minor with some borrowing from the harmonic minor as I did in my Round 0 entry, then later modulates to D major to fit the key of Pareidolia. The tempo is exactly halfway between my Round 0 and 1 entry. I reused some elements of both the other tracks: the drumbeat is the same as in Semiprecious, only changing in the last third; the bridge at "My shield has been destroyed..." is exactly the same as the prechorus of Pareidolia; the melody of the electric guitar in the final part is the same as the verses of Pareidolia; and the outro is meant to end the song just like my Pareidolia entry begins, with the same old nylon string guitar which BTW was my first guitar as a child, and the birdsong, emerging here from the hectic sound of cars passing, suggesting Karl has managed to flee the overwhelming situation.
I ought to go out in the sunshine
I've been hiding in here so long
A bit of social interaction
That's OK, what could go wrong?

A sunny day to spend
With my family and friends
Who drag me around
I just didn't know
How many places they would go
All the pictures and sounds...

I wonder now as I do sometimes
What it might feel like to them
I wish my sensory perception
Would never ever overload again

I'm just a zombie now
Mindlessly I tag along
As they drag me around
Faces flashing now
Messages in my head
Drowned in the sound

But in my pocket, I remember now
I got the medicine to calm me down
Pretty gemstones I love so much
I'm in desperate need of a healing touch

My shield has been destroyed
I blankly stare into the void

Breathe in, breathe out
Talisman, help me now
Here in my hands
A thousand colors dance
I'll be better once
I'm back home alone
Try to focus on
The patterns in these stones
I will be okay
When I'm home alone
Try to focus on
The faces in these stones

This song (attempts to?) bridges round 0 and round 1 both lyrically and sonically.

You better take
Or you’ll be taken
You better speak
Or you’ll be spoken to
You better wake
Or you’ll be woken up
Just like me
from the firey cackles of hell

They’ve been dragging me around
Making me do their bidding
They’ve been leading me along
a path of endless sinning
Clawing me, tempting me down down down

They’ve been dragging me around
Forcing me to submission
They’ve been leading me along
the path of perdition

You have to pre-emptive strike
before you’re stricken
You ought to get on your knees and pray
Before you’re preyed upon

These infernal beasts
They are relentless
They’ve been dogging me
Every single day of my life

They’ve been dragging me around
Working me to submission
They’ve been guiding me along
the highway to perdition

They’ve been dragging me around
Making me do their bidding
They’ve been leading me along
a path of endless sinning
Clawing me, tempting me down down down

SPOILER
SPOILER_SHOW
The musician in our round zero song felt they weren't good enough, and were frustrated by that feeling of not getting anywhere. Here, as they try to making touring work, they long for an easier life where they aren't broke all the time and have a job that gives them a living wage and benefits. In our Pareidolia song, we see that they have gotten their office job, but they are still unfulfilled, thinking of the simpler times of their childhood in the midst of the doldrums of day to day office life. Will anything be good enough for our hapless hero? Or are they condemned to a life of ennui?
Drag me around to Kentucky
Drag me around to Vermont
Drag me around to Mississippi, honey
But it won’t get me what I want

Drag me around to Wisconsin
Drag me around to New York
Drag me around to Louisiana
But I’ll still end up falling short

I need a day job
I need a paid job
I got bills and loans and liens
And I’m tired of eating beans

I need a day job
I need a paid job
This old tour bus got me down
It just keeps dragging me around
I gotta get a job

Drag me around to Peoria
Drag me around to Pierre
Drag me around to Punxsutawney, honey
But you wont get me anywhere

Drag me around to Toledo
Drag me around to Sioux Falls
Drag me around to Chattanooga Choo Choo
But you’ll still have me by the balls

I need a day job
I need a paid job
I got bills and loans and liens
And I’m tired of eating beans

I need a day job
I need a paid job
This old tour bus got me down
It just keeps dragging me around
I gotta get a job

Benefits, Healthcare, and dental
Without them I’m going mental;
It’s not enough to be creative
Starving artist? OVERRATED.

Drag me around the office
Show me around my desk
Where can I find the printer and the scanner?
I don’t want to be a mess

I got a day job
I got a paid job
I got bills and loans and liens
But i’m throwing out the beans

I got a day job
I got a paid job
This old tour bus broke down
It can’t drag me around
Now I got a real job

Drag Me Around
Berkeley Social Scene

Liner Notes: Our round 0 song, Semiprecious, was from the perspective of the dog Precious of the movie The Silence of the Lambs, and is owned by its villain. Precious felt a bit down about things as his owner was spending ever more time on his gruesome hobby. In our round 1 song, Pareidolia, the narrator's romantic partner was feeling paranoid and upset - convinced they saw some scary person down at the train station. The narrator was convinced their partner had gone off the deep end with these fears. Here, in round 2, we have this narrator lamenting that their romantic partner (ie, the narrator from round 1) drags them around all over town without taking the time to understand them, including how fragile they are from being previously attacked and institutionalized. They even went to see The Silence of The Lambs, which really was a bad idea. And if you didn't know, Belleview was a well-known psychiatric hospital in NYC.

So, with the bridge of this round put in the right spot of the timeline....
o Round 0 - character from a scary movie
o Round 2 - character 1 explodes, this inappropriate scary movie showing pushes them over the edge
o Round 1 - character 2 sees that character 1 is going off the deep end, describes their behavior back to them and lets them know that what they see in the world may not be there

------

This one was really all too much
I’ll be haunted for so long
The dog in the well, the guy in the mask
Don’t you know, everything was wrong

I hid my eyes from the screen
I was shaken to the core
Women killed and skinned to make a dress
I just can’t anymore

You drag me around to these movies I don’t wanna see
You drag me around to these places I don’t wanna be
You drag me around without thinking how I feel
You drag me around, around and around

Why don’t you remember my story
Man I told it all before
I was attacked three years ago
At the threshold of my door

Now I am always wondering if
I see things that aren’t there
Maybe that man is following me
I’ve got to stay aware

You drag me around to do these things I don’t wanna do
You drag me around without thinking anything through
You drag me around without having just a clue
You drag me around, around and around

The weight can get so heavy
at times I even start to crack
I spent a month in Belleview
And sometimes I need to go back

You drag me around to these things I don’t wanna see
You drag me around to these places I don’t wanna be
You drag me around without thinking how I feel
You drag me around, around and around

You drag me around to do these things I don’t wanna do
You drag me around without thinking anything through
You drag me around without having just a clue
You drag me around, around and around

Nur Ein XVI - Drag Me Around

Drag Me Around
by WreckdoM

Well.
I'm driving my big pink rig
Down route 6 sixty 6.
I picked up a hitchhiking marmet
He's my new best friend.
We joke and laugh, he pokes my eye,
That's ok, I let him drive.
Tires squeal as we jackknife,
I honk the horn, I feel alive!
Somebody drag me out, I'm on fire.
Somebody drag me out, and pee on me.
I ain't got my truck,
I don't want to live no more,
Wrap me up in a tarp,
Drag me around til you find a hole.

I'm taking one day at a time,
Recovering the best I can.
The marmet comes to visit me
And give a helping hand.
He boils me some oatmeal,
And pours it on my crotch.
It's really funny how he's so clumsy,
We both laugh a lot.
Somebody drag me out, I'm insane.
Somebody drag me out, and pee on my brain.
I can't drive a truck,
I just stay indoors,
Wrap me up in a tarp,
Drag me around til you find a hole.

Ever Kenievel - Drag Me Around

This song bridges our Round Zero and Round One songs in both story and music. The protagonist of our Semiprecious, Angela, and the subject of our Pareidolia were engaged, but after the breakup, they attempt to maintain a friendship. The subject of Pareidolia slips deeper into paranoia and into his drug habit, worsening until his spiral of bad choices and eventual (self?) immolation in the woods, as alluded to in Pareidolia, whose rain and thunder background noise bring the song to a close.

So you tell me that we cannot be anything anymore
But we can still be friends
Semiprecious to you well I guess it'll do
It still feels like an end

And you drag me around
To all of the bars you like
Drag me around
A dip in the pool
You drag me around
As if nothin had changed at all
Drag me around
Like I'm some kinda fool, yeah

But how could you have known that I didn't outgrow you
Like I made you think
'cuz I never told you just loaded my nose up
'til I couldn't blink
What a pair that we made with the holes in your veins
Like secrets in Morse code
Now you're playin it clean (well, except nicotine)
And I continue to erode
Erode

Drag me around
To all of the bars you like
Drag me around
A dip in the pool
You drag me around
As if nothin had changed at all
Drag me around
Like I'm some kinda fool, yeah
I am definitely too square for how experimental this is, but I can imagine that if I was in the right state of mind, the section starting at 2:20 might transport me to another dimension - jeffhenderson

Drag Me Around, Hot Pink Halo
SPOILER
SPOILER_SHOW
The last thing I wanted to do this round was write another song about *checks notes* myself and my feelings, but the challenge made me do it.

My first song was about the blue pigment Lapis Lazuli, and specifically about Brett Whiteley's painting Big Orange Sunset (1974), which is a landscape painting of Lavender Bay in Sydney Harbour (home to a rather famous bridge...). My second song was about my experience of emigrating from Australia to Ireland four years ago, and the subsequent decline of a close friendship. When I lived in Australia, I worked at an art supply shop with that friend, and my parting gift from the shop, chosen by that person, was a Raphael paintbrush "treasure chest" and a set of oil paints. The one colour in that set that I didn't already have was Ultramarine (I'm more of a Prussian Blue girl, really), so that's the tube that's seen the most action so far. If you've been following the pigment theory lessons so far from both my Nur Ein and Spintunes entries, you'll know that Ultramarine is the synthetic version of Lapis Lazuli. So, as you can see, the challenge wrote the song for me.

Musically:
In the semiprecious song, my chorus referenced three colours: orange, lavender and lapis lazuli (blue). In this one, I reflected that by building this chorus around red, green and ultramarine (blue). To spell it out, the red references Australia and its red earth and the green is Ireland, because, you know. It's not called the "Emerald Isle" for nothing. Ultramarine references the literal tube of paint from my gift, but also the oceans and distance between the two countries, and added to the motif of the sea that was set up in the semiprecious song. Semiprecious was in E major and Pareidolia was in G major, so this song starts in E and moves to G. They were also both built around the I, IV and V chords, so this song continues in that tradition. Next week I'll probably rebel by going full jazz. There are some other musical references in there too, but those are the main ones I think.
I've had to be creative with my lyric posting due to technical difficulties. I'd made myself some artwork for this song, so you get an edited version that includes lyrics...
