Nur Ein XVI - Devil In The Rain

Liner Notes
I didn't really like this challenge or the clip that was chosen for it but I've come out with something I'm (relatively) happy with in the circumstances. I decided early on I didn't want to directly narrate the clip, and so my interpretation of the challenge would mainly rest on the music. To this end I decided to adopt certain motifs and synth sounds for different components of the clip, sort of how Prokofiev uses instruments to represent different animals in Peter and the Wolf. When the moving staircases are on screen, there is a descending synth arp that plays. Whenever the sinister man is on screen, there's that big slow-attack synth. There's soft keys for the woman. There's a string section for the hazy, indistinct floaty scenes. In my first draft I stuck very rigidly to this, so instruments were coming in at odd times to match when the scene shifted, and in the end I decided to soften my approach and try bring these in more naturally, even if it meant not matching up exactly to the cuts. To hold it all together I kept this propulsive, unchanging bassline through the entire thing.

Lyrically, I am currently in the middle of a "service review" at work where my employer is looking to slash everyone's wages by thousands of pounds while simultaneously increasing our workload. It's an absolute shitshow and this song is about that and about capitalism and work in general. There's a really insidious thing management is doing of trying to tie these changes to COVID, despite the fact these changes are the result of several years of planning around their "business needs", and actually the cuts were all meant to come in last year before COVID disrupted it. They keep saying stuff like "everyone's suffering because of COVID" or worst of all variations of "we're all in this together", when the reality is that far from being some great leveller COVID has actually proven very effectively on a massive scale that we are NOT all in this together. That's what the "the devil's sins won't wash away just because he's felt the rain" line is about. Yes, I'm sure you've suffered on some level in the pandemic, everyone has, but you don't get to pretend we're the same as you slash my wages and give yourself another bonus.

So this song is about that, there's also a few references to the source clip (The Fall Of The House Of Usher) in the references to being buried alive and tombs, and I made some attempts to line up lyrics with scenes, like the hammer falling, or the shifting staircases. It's not my best song of the tournament but given how difficult I found this challenge I'm pretty happy with it.

Devil In The Rain - The Lowest Bitter

they say we're all the same
that we all feel the same pain
that we all weather the same storms

this place, will it become my tomb?
bury me in business speak,
service reviews
we got our sickles in hand,
but the man takes a hammer to your and my livelihoods
they'll stick us in the ground for the greater good
they say, "one day, maybe you'll make it to the top"
but it's a down escalator that you've got to climb up
they say, "one day, maybe you'll make it to the top"
but it's a down escalator that you've got to climb up
and I don't wanna climb up

the company identifies a business need
for you to bleed and bleed and bleed and bleed and bleed and bleed and bleed

they say we're all the same
that we all feel the same pain
that we all weather the same storms
but the devil's sins won't wash away
just because he's felt the rain

I have been managed for most of my life,
from the cradle to the grave, I'm on company time
and you have been managed for most of your life
but your coffin ain't covered by the company dime
and we are all managed for most of our lives
they will take you, they will break you, they will bury you alive

they say we're all the same
that we all feel the same pain
that we all weather the same storms
but the devil's sins won't wash away
just because he's felt the rain

Devil In The Rain - Brown Word and the Big Whine
Liner notes
Well this was a fun one and I also tried to take care that the song makes some sense without the accompanying clip. My first task was to line up those hammer hits. I wanted to do that the minute I saw them and I believe I had succeeded: if you put the video and my song into Reaper they align. Whether the rest seems to align alright is up to the judges - I tried to time some thematic changes in the song with thematic cuts in the clip.

Lyrically speaking, this was hard. If I hadn't known this was The Fall of the House of Usher, the clip wouldn't have made a whole lot of sense, and it makes less sense given the title - there's nothing to suggest rain or necessarily devils in the clip. I wanted the lyrics to express the same foreboding and danger that is expressed in the clip but go along with the title, which I thought was just a stellar title. My result is something open to interpretation which might or might not work in the favor of the challenge. We might have a literal demon or bad guy lurking around in the rain and resulting floods, that wreaks disaster, and the narrator is hoping the weather will break. Or we have the figurative - when times are difficult trouble (the devil) rears its head. We again hold out hope for better times, hoping the sun will damper down the threat of danger. And the end section would be the same in both cases - the narrator is beleaguered and trying to hold out, looking for some way to banish whatever particular devil. This could all go with the clip in that we have a subject that is clearly in danger, we have some floating coffins suggesting doom, we have a final meeting of the man and woman subject - potential or real confrontation, and at the end we have the woman dressed for the grave, and if you know the story (major spoiler), she's not actually dead yet.

Musically there are roughly three acts to go with the sections of the clip I have the music breaking on. The song's structure is almost opposite of what I'd normally do. It starts with a guitar solo (okay not too weird for me). Then the atmospheric/noise interlude comes early; I would've placed it before an epic ending, instead the epic middle follows with the elevated energy of hope. Then the end is meant to have the hook, which normally should've come a lot earlier. I made use of dynamics to try and regulate the flow of the music, so we have some low parts and some high parts breaking things up. So in short, this challenge really turned things on their head for me and I came out with a song I would not have otherwise made.

All in all, it wasn't a bad challenge and it has been a delight to have contended this far. If I go, I go!
When it rains it pours
You wouldn't know it behind closed doors but
It's time to get to higher ground

Well it's feast or famine
You wouldn't know it till you feel in the gut
Times like these he comes around

I'm going searching for the end of the rainbow
I have a covenant with eternity
When the sun next shows its loving face
I hope he's lying in the dark asleep in the grave

But one thing I can say I hope he never takes me
Devil in the rain

Devil in the rain
You really put a hurt on my game
I can feel you creeping in my tracks
I can feel you breathing down my back
Don't know how long I can keep you at bay
Oh devil in the rain

Devil in the rain
Tryin' to put a hurt on my game
I can feel you creeping in my tracks
I can feel you breathing down my back
Looking for a prayer to drive you away
Oh devil in the rain

Crown Shy

I get fucked up at every party
I know what you think
When I drink
Just let it go

Don't try
Don't try to save me

Let the hammer fall
Let's fall
I'm always falling

I keep on sinking downwards
I just want to drift away
I'd sell my body to the man with the bottle
Sell my soul to the devil in the rain

Don't try
Just take my hand

And come to bed
I'm waiting

For you to tell me how to breathe
Like you always do
For you to say
"It's OK
I still love you"

Devil In The Rain
by Max Bombast

There is a pattern repeating in time
He is the thundercloud over you mind
When it is light he leaves you in the dark
Where it's raining by design

When you go walking you're always alone
You've never known all the comforts of home
Storms brew in his mind and the lightning can strike
Anywhere and any time

It hits you and hits you and hits you again
But what can you do and what can you change
If you can't see the devil in the rain

Everyone here can see it as plain as the day
The story is written all over your face
The story you tell when you step outside
A truth he will deny

He twists it and twists it and twists it again
But finally you've realized he's playing a game
You've seen the devil in the rain

Now you're free to strike out on your own
Don't mourn what died out long ago
Now you're free to find out who you are

Now you're free to strike out on your own
Don't mourn what died out long ago
Now you're free to find out who you are

Wuff, this was a tough one! I ended up writing this song about going through a mental health crisis and fearing that the people around you are using your vulnerable state to take advantage of you while pretending to help. My ties to the video ended up mainly being lyrical themes that matched with what's shown onscreen, but I also like to think I've captured at least some of the dark atmospheric feel of the video in my song.
I'm drifting
into the corner again
not much to do on the floor but sit here
and wait for this to end
and the pictures
flipping through my head
a skull that cracks through plaster
what are the last words that I said?

I fear the friendly faces
who appear when I'm in pain
do they mask their vile intentions
like a devil in the rain

my secondary exit's down
a stairway thick with sickened air
a stairway thick with sickened air
my secondary exit's there

I fear the friendly faces
who appear when I'm in pain
do they mask their vile intentions
like a devil in the rain

My body and my thoughts are seconds off,
I think I'm rotting,
being mocked by microscopic cracks in clocks,
just make it stop
(just make it stop)
My body and my thoughts are seconds off
I think I'm rotting
and my heartbeat mocks the clatter of the clock
just make it stop
(just make it stop)

I fear the friendly faces
who appear when I'm in pain
do they mask their vile intentions
like a devil in the rain

Devil in the Rain, Hot Pink Halo

***

you look in the glass
you don’t like what you see

you search inside
you don’t like what you find

the devil’s in the
the devil’s in the

you listen but
you don’t like what you hear

the devil’s in the rain and
the devil’s in the details
the devil’s in the next room
the devil’s in disguise
the devil’s in the kitchen
the devil’s in your eye
the devil is in your mind

and the reflections build up
the frequencies bounce
your balance is thrown
for a loop and
you fall and you fall and
you fall and you fall

you look in the glass
you don’t like what you see
you search inside
you don’t like what you find
you don’t like what you hear
