Friendship Bracelet
Lichen Throat
I saw the girls play pattycakes
Beside the cafetorium.
The sharp and practiced moves they made,
An ordered pandemonium.
I saw the folded classroom notes
They passed behind the teacher’s back.
I never read one, never wrote
My secrets down in blue or black.
Brightly woven bracelets
On skinny wishbone wrists.
Another year without one,
Another year unkissed. (x2)
I count the signatures each night
On yearbook pages filled with ink.
Do they sign just to be polite,
With empty words in green and pink?
“See you next fall,” is what they say,
“Enjoy the summer and stay cool.”
They’ll meet again on Saturday,
And I’ll see them next year in school.
Brightly woven bracelets
On smooth and slender wrists.
Another year without one,
Another year unkissed. (x2)
