Nur Ein XVII Round Four - June Moon

“June Moon”
By Lunkhead

This song is NOT about a person.
Spoiler
"June Moon" the song title is standing in for Nur Ein. I gave Nur Ein she/her pronouns only because "June" is a typically female name. I was trying to make the song not actually sound like it was written about Nur Ein. I'm singing about feeling burned out about Nur Ein, reacting to some judge reviews, feeling burned out about my career, and some personal stuff about what the month of June means for me these days.
I gave her my word
I gave her my rhyme
No more ways to say
Somethin’ ‘bout nothin’
The days grow long
But the nights get shorter
And she’s still not satisfied

I work for “June Moon”
I do what I'm told
Don't break the rules or
She’ll give you a scolding
I should just walk away
But I'm not smart enough
And I'm too proud to
Go down without a fight

I’m still mourning
Still feeling lost
Look for a way to make
Somethin’ from nothin’
A year disappears
Now the weeks drag on
And she’s still not satisfied

I work for “June Moon”
I do what I'm told
Don't break the rules or
She’ll give you a scolding
I should just walk away
But I'm not smart enough
And I'm too proud to
Go down without a fight

I’m falling apart
I’m breaking down
Feel like I’m turning from
Somethin’ to nothin’
And she’s still not satisfied

I work for “June Moon”
I do what I'm told
Don't break the rules or
She’ll give you a scolding
I should just walk away
But I'm not smart enough
And I'm too proud to
Go down without a fight

Liner notes:
Spoiler
I live in the Southern Hemisphere. June is the time of our longest nights, and our coldest and wettest days.
I get sad and stressed every winter - leaving for work in the dark, coming home in the dark, and wishing the sun would come out from behind a beach-shaped cloud.
This is a song about sadness, and finding a moment of happiness each day to get you through to tomorrow.
Sun’s coming up, but I’m feeling down again
Happens the same with every year
when the days are shortest
I go the lowest I can go (oh no)

You’re coming up, and then you’re going down
Pulling the tides and drowning me
And when the world has tilted
We see the most we can of you, (oh wow)

June Moon
Winter’s coming way too fast
Long nights
December sun ain’t gonna carry on

So come on get up, wipe off that frowning face
Make a decision to unwind
And let those rays so sparing
lift you up and drag you through (oh yeah)

June Moon
Winter’s coming way too fast
Long nights
December sun ain’t gonna carry on

So come on get up….

I was born in June and I think astrology is dumb.
you say I can’t be trusted
you discussed my lack of reason
but the seasons and the planets
can be blamed for all my crimes
I’m not looking for excuses
but the truth is out there somewhere
I’m not trying to find it
I’ll just use it as a crutch

because Neptune is in retrograde and Saturn is returning
and I’m learning that my fate is sealed and there’s no point in trying
I’m dying just to lie down and pretend that nothing’s working
I’m lurking in the shadows in the hope that you’ll go away

you can’t blame me for giving up
I’m not responsible for my actions
and I won’t satisfy you with
an admission of my guilt
I’m a Gemini, and that’s why you
might find me a little frustrating
it’s not my fault
I was born under a summer moon

it was a perfect June morning
when I was born into this world
I would be loving and forgiving
joined the living as Friday's child
my future was laid out for me
before I could even stand
if it’s all planned then count me out
count me out

I watch the bubbles in my lemonade, the pattern is upsetting
and I’m betting that my tea-leaves mean that something bad is brewing
I’m doing all I can, which is to say I’m doing nothing
I’m bluffing my way through this life, please leave me alone

June Moon by Rattlebox

Hey June
The moon that takes the longest to come out
Hey June
I’m hiding like a vampire from the day
Hey June
I’ve got a disagreement with the sun
Hey June
I used to be a flower til my world tumbled over

Summer is in blossom and I’m crawling under stones
Waiting for the starlight, then I walk around the block
And hurry home

Hey June
She’s dancing on the floor of every club
Hey June
She’s laughing in the corner of every bar
Hey June
I’ve got a disagreement with the night
Hey June
I used to be a comet til my world tumbled over

Days are getting shorter as the sunset hits the beach
There she sits with someone else, hand in hand and staring at the sea

New love, it must be wonderful
As I’m drowning with the June moon over me

Sometimes life is incoherent
Like voices clashing in a class
And the questions people ask you
Are just too asinine to bear

June and moon and rhyme and scansion
Structure sense and sound
All are victims of the present tense

The patterns that you are accustomed to
Do not appear on schedule now
All platitudes and reassurances
Fail to rouse them from their lair

June and moon and rhyme and scansion
Structure sense and sound
All are victims of the present tense

“Shit be cray today” they say
I say sink or swim
Be calm when throbbing bombs go off
You gotta keep it cool

Everywhere the center is not holding
The newborn fiend towards Bethlehem will slouch
Some Romans blame it on the council
I prefer to blame it on Foucault

June and moon and rhyme and scansion
Structure sense and sound
All are victims of the present tense

The Alleviators

<VERSE 1>
A common enough question
I don't know what answer you're looking for
Put your own colors to the test
You just can't see yourself in anyone

<PRECHORUS 1>
Cigarette underneath a lampost
Pause to consider the fires
The old district is in peril
And you're straining for the sirens

<CHORUS>
Someone come feel something for me
Get me a doctor, weather or medicine
Someone come feel something for me
A distant orbit, Luna in the sixth month

<VERSE 2>
Feel like a moth in the ashes
Some lanterns are better left shuttered
I put my colors to the test
Just couldn't catch a kindness from anyone

<PRECHORUS 2>
We wax and wane

<repeat CHORUS>

<BRIDGE>
Moonbeams breaking, breaking
Summer fog so thick I couldn't breathe
Couldn't breathe
Moonbeams breaking, breaking
Summer fog so thick I couldn't breathe

<repeat CHORUS twice>

LINER
Spoiler
I started writing lyrics about one thing and then I decided I hated the lyrics. I'm gonna be vague but it was a song about something happening to a friend and it just felt shitty and exploitative to be using someone else's real experiences and real misery for song fodder. So I binned that and made a meta song about mining other people's lives for song material and how weird and icky that is.

I'm not really pleased with how this turned out and the lyrics have ended up a bit of a tangled mess, but maybe the judges will be tricked into thinking they're profound instead of confused. I have a suspicion that I'll need a few drop outs or flagrant challenge violations by other competitors to stay in this time but who knows.
trivialising others lives
a songwriter,
a vulture,
my voice is stolen valor
oh some things are not for songs

and who are you to try and take ownership of someone else's shit?
you don't know anything
and it's a cliché writing songs about the moon,
making the phases a metaphor
for some tedious thought,
a mind is gibbous waning,
shrinking little by little
and mine is no exception
the arrogance of writing a song
like I got something to say,
when I don't know anything at all

who would try appropriate someone else's story?
a songwriter is a vulture,
a tourist in some trauma,
airbnb of misfortune,
well some things are not for writing empty words,
I know,
I'm sorry if I sometimes get it wrong

and who are you to try and take ownership of someone else's shit?
you don't know anything
and it's a cliché writing songs about the moon,
making the phases a metaphor
for some tedious thought

We will light up the sky
With the superest of supermoons
We are brighter and larger
Something you’ve never seen before

Pay some fucking attention
To the bright ball in the sky

June Moon
We shine bright and then we’re gone
June Moon
Not everything lasts a lifetime

We will rise pink and glowing
See us when it is early or late
Break out your Farmer’s Almanac
And hope the skies aren’t cloudy

Pay some fucking attention
To the bright ball in the sky

June Moon
We shine bright and then we’re gone
June Moon
Not everything lasts a lifetime
So make it count

You won’t see this shit on the fourth of July
Fireworks ain’t nothing comparatively

"June Moon"
by Moss Palace

June is walking home tonight
She’s a shadow moving
Along city sidewalks
and corner shops

I hear her footsteps in my head
As she passes by the
street where we used to live
and share a drink or two

Seems like ages since we danced
We didn’t know that time would come to an end

See the moon as she rises over
Nothing can feel like this
Her light and her shine will fade
And I’ll never forget

June takes her lipstick off
Stares in the mirror and
Can’t believe she’s the
lady looking back

Her eyes still shimmering
Reminded of all the
Nights she took the city
And its heart by a storm

Seems like ages since we danced
We didn’t know that time would come to an end

See the moon as she rises over
Nothing can feel like this
Her light and her shine will fade
And I’ll never forget

See the moon as she rises over
Nothing can feel like this
Her light and her shine will fade
And I’ll never forget

June Moon (Virgo Power) (shadow)

wish I could feel like I knew what was wrong
wish I could sleep through the night til the dawn
wish I could feel like I knew what was wrong
wish I could sleep through the night til the dawn

chorus:
forget it, Jake, it's Cheridah
sometimes nonsense means everything
and sometimes everything means nothing at all

wish that I knew how to act around you
I could learn to be free for a while
wish that I knew how to act around you
I could learn to be free for a while

CHORUS

BRIDGE:
some of the saddest songs sound like jokes
some of the best people struggle to exist
I've got it easy, I don't need to be told
but why does everything feel so hard

CHORUS

outro:
every time I want to give up
it takes so long to remember how to try
every time I want to give up
it takes so long to remember how to try
every time I want to give up
it takes so long to remember how to try
every time I want to give up
it takes so long to remember how to try

"Cheridah" is the name of this fricken wallpaper sample i have up in my bathroom. I saw it and somehow it inspired me on the chorus. i know it's random. ha. also as I listened to the other entries I realized I totally forgot to make the song be about June OR the moon in any way, shape or form!

Like most space rock songs, it's basically a drug trip.

Peyote is well-known for its psychedelic qualities, but it's far from the only cactus containing alkaloids that get you high... or worse. A few species (some Aztekium and Ariocarpus species, IIRC) are shunned even by the indigenous peoples because they supposedly "make you recognize the true nature of evil so that you will never be able to see things the same way anymore" or something like that, which I found kind of fascinating. I tried to imagine what such a trip might be like; horrifying yet enlightening. The blast of our extraterrestrial friend's gun in this song does something to that effect.

Also, I noticed that my lyric contains the phrase "June Moon" only once, and it could be argued that there is little reason for it to be called that. The idea developed from a scenario on a moonlit night in June, though. It was the third or so draft that clicked. At one time I tried to deliberately avoid the obvious rhyme in each couplet (e.g. the Killers' Mr. Brightside: "Now they′re going to bed and my stomach is sick / it's all in my head, but she′s touching his... chest now") but then I found it too gimmicky. But that's where the very beginning of the lyric came from: "I sat outside, one night in June / gazing at the sky." So I guess you could say the title is mentioned one and a half times...

Also, the only "rhyme" in the lyric (apart from the title) is the repetition of "The same way again" at the end, unless I missed something.
I sat outside one night in June
Gazing at the sky
I noticed something strange up there
Speeding towards the ground
And an unpleasant noise
Rang out across the fields as it crashed
Ever the curious one, I decided
I should take a look
And so I walked
Heading for the spot
That the sound had presumably come from
As far as I could tell

From a hill I saw his craft
Not of this earth
I hid behind a boulder
Hoped he wouldn't sense my presence
But that green guy
Had already spotted me
A blast of light right in my face
Everything went blurry

I saw the nature
Of all evil as it is
Traveling through time and space
All secrets were revealed
I saw all things and I will never see them
The same way again

I awoke and he was gone
Feeling dizzy in my head
Under the June Moon light
I stumbled home a different person
How can I come
To terms with what I saw?
The alien, he opened up my mind
And I can't close it

It's hard to explain it
It felt like drowning
Yet I was soaring above the clouds
Suddenly every last little piece
Of the jigsaw fell into place

I saw why everybody
Is the way they are
I saw a deeper structure
Underneath the surface
I saw all things and I will never see them
The same way again

I saw the nature
Of all evil as it is
Traveling through time and space
All secrets were revealed
I saw all things and I will never see them
The same way again
The same way again
The same way again
The same way again

I've been away/busy with work the last few weeks but it's calming down now, so I thought I'd actually do a shadow! I'll try to get some reviews out in the next few days for the weeks I've missed.
I think of that night sometimes when I'm lonely
On Jacksons field
As May turned into June
The moon in the sky made our skin look translucent
I touched the grass
To make sure it was real

We went back to your house to watch Donnie Darko
Your parents' clocks
Ticking out of sync
That sinking feeling we just couldn't run from
That this was all
There would ever be

We could've left that night and never looked back
Turned on our heels and escape this dead end town for good
But when I opened my eyes you'd already left
Whispered your name
Though you were gone

Run away
Don't look behind you, love
Or the world will clip your heels

(The moon in the sky made our skin look translucent
As May turned in...
Turned into June)

This song is about the marvelous merits of reading and writing escapist fiction. In this case, the narrator takes her inspiration from the early summer moon.
Regarding the challenge, there are no perfect end rhymes; however I did endeavor to make the end of each verse rhyme perfectly (or nearly) with a word at the beginning of the next line. There are no rhyming couplets, but the chorus is a pair of slant rhyming tercets with a coda line tacked on at the end.

My mother says it’s only a phase
Gazing into space with wistful sigh
But I’ve always known I want to be brave
Unwavering in the face of time

And I’m busting out all over
The rover’s tale entraps my mind
In a kind of sly composure
Whose closure fills a life sublime

Chorus
I will make my escape on the edge of a page
Flying over alleyways of black ink on beige
The summer sky will help me to evade
The everyday type of ennui that disdains
The sorrows, excitements, and rages exclaimed
By my heart in the dark twixt the stories I’ve made,
Oh! What stories I’ve made!

My interests never seem to wane;
Contained within, these stories hold the world
Curled in glory and in blame
Unnamed throngs in a single girl

Each thought a pearl of long sought genius,
A dreamless breadth that will excite
Delightful plots that got between this
Kiss of inspiration’s strike

Chorus

‘Soon, soon,’ says the strawberry moon
‘No doubt nor torment holds you child,
Nor your wild sense of dreaming.

Your fantasies of poetries
Could fill a thousand mystic isles;
Their smiles shall abate your keening.’

Chorus
“It's like opera for toddlers or something.” -furrypedro

Midnight Summer Sex Rites are Sexy
Now is the time to gather
When she is ripe and heavy
The moon so close to the earth
She is oh so ready

Ever higher and brighter
In the sky just above the horizon

This is the time when flowers bloom
In the night
This is the time of abundance
The June Moon

Now is the time for rites of passage
As we secure a promise
We commit an act of love
Let the stars rain down

Chasing love around the banyan
Screaming in your head
We will be legend
We will take our happiness
We will be legend

Ever higher and brighter
In the sky just above the horizon

This is the time when flowers bloom
In the night
This is the time of abundance
