Dear Saddam Hussein,
I thought about killing you.
After the Kurds and the burning of the wells I asked my mom why we just don't assassinate you. She said that's illegal though I didn't know what cop was going to arrest the United States. Why didn't someone go of their own sense of duty, privately, what if it was me? How would I get close, to leverage the surprise? That feeling of being in the room with famous evil - recognition of the devil. The look on your face when you realize...
I thought about killing you and at the time it didn't make me sad. You'd be the one time I could get a pass.
Years later I saw them pull you from a hole in your unmentionables and shine a light in your mouth and you looked tired, a retired tyrant who just wanted his own bed.
I had thought about somebody killing you
And then they did. So many thousands of miles and decades later, I watched on a grainy screen as the floor fell out, the rope went tight, they killed you, you died looking up toward the light and they swarmed about you like the darkness iteslf closing in.
