URL/Domain Names - Questions

Post by bortwein »

I'm starting this thread in the "Help" section, because I have a question I'm pretty sure you all can give me your 2 cents worth of info to help me out.

I am thinking of getting a domain name to get away from my mac.com address which is long and annoying at times.

But, I want to see if anyone has the name taken without bringing it to the attention of some url grabbing/pimping .com place that will end up overcharging me to buy if from them.

I wanted: http://www.brand-on.com but it seems to be owned by one of those fore mentioned .coms.

I am thinking about http://www.brand-ondesign.com/
because it doesn't seem to be taken, but I could be wrong and that's why I want to check on it.

I got the concept of using my first name to my advantage and play off of the word "Brand" then combined with the action word "on" I was then going to create a logo/identity for myself using it like this: brand(on)design

Oh and I want to see if there were any free hosts within our group for my domain once I buy it.

Take off your tinfoil hat and just check. If you're set on being paranoid, go to register.com. As far as registering it goes, the cheapest I've found is at godaddy.com (8 or 9 bucks a year). I use them and they've been fine.

brand-ondesign.com doesn't do 'it' for me It's got design in there, but so what?
Why don't you get bortwein.com?
From the point of view of marketing it's excellent (think hagendaas), and with sub domains you could use it for whatever you want.
It's available, and it's you.

This has to be the advice that makes the most sense to me in ages. I need to stop looking for a gimick and just be the bortwein I am.

Thanks,
I think I might just look at getting that one. It's too bad I can't afford 2 or I'd get ryhmeswithdesign.com as well and forward it to bortwein.com

http://www.domainsurfer.com/

Though they have one of those banners for cheap registration, they don't pimp anything.

And the search string is good and general, it'll return all hits on a partial name... handy for the quick and dirty reg search, it is.

this may be obe, but i'd suggest avoiding random hyphens, as it leads to people not remembering where the pyph... crap i can't type right now. the... hyphens... go.
not a bad idea, but kinda also hard to remember.

Oh yeah, I 100% agree. And I get paid for these sort of opinions, so they're marginally less worthless than other people's. You could always use "it rhymes with design" as the tagline.

The best thing is that it's very memorable, catchy in a fun way, but still professional (you can write off all the fun catchiness as a coincidence).

Only to the people who pay you for them :)

Yeah bortwein, I'd go for simple, easy to remember and SHORT. Which bortwein is.

I don't get paid for my opinion on website names, however, so it's marginally more worthless than c hack's!
