I haven't tried this myself (because I'm in love with Battery), but if you want a free drum vst, this looks quite handy:

Solid State Logic has announced the LMC-1 Plug-In. Capturing the signature sound of the legendary 'Listen Mic Compressor' from SSL's 1980s SL 4000 Series consoles, the LMC-1 delivers a distinctive compression sound for a range of processing applications.

Originally intended to prevent overloading on a tracking room 'talkback' mic, the Listen Mic Compressor accidentally became an essential factor in defining the drum sound of the 1980s, when producers began patching it into their signal chain to process ambient drum mics, creating radically dynamic drum sounds and rhythm tracks.

Recreated from analysis of the original units, the LMC-1 Plug-In features the same great sound and simplicity as its forebear, with fixed attack and release levels and controls for Compression level as well as Input and Output trim and a Bypass switch.

LMC-1 is available for Mac only, in AU and VST plug-in formats, making it compatible with a wide range of popular software sequencers. Users of ProTools systems will be able to use the plug-in via a third-party VST to RTAS plug-in 'wrapper'.

The plug-in is available as a direct download and is free of charge following a simple registration procedure.

For more information, visit their web site at http://www.solid-state-logic.com.

I'll second the LOFI, it's awesome.

For a basic synth, it's hard to do better than Synth1. I know the page is in Japanese, but just click on the zip file link of the latest version (or the next one down, if you don't trust an alpha).

But for more complex stuff, Crystal is the thing to use. It's almost like a freeware version of Absynth.

Ambience is a great reverb for simulating "live" spaces, like concert halls.

Lastly (for now), Tweakbench = Awesome

I've been enjoying Bram's Cyanide 2, which I think I mentioned in another thread recently.

SE64, for all your chiptune needs.

ELOTTRONIX XL, for when you really need that 80 second delay.
