Web Sites: what is...

Post by Leaf »

Can anyone tell me what the "technical" name of those little yellow tags that pop up when your mouse rolls over a link? Like over a photo that doubles as a link, and it tells you some info?

I'm using frontpage right now... not by choice mind you, it's what I was instructed to use by the guy who set up a particular project, and I'm hoping to add those in... but I don't know how...

Help would be appreciated...

yeah, i dunno what they'd be referred to in frontpage, but starfinger's right as far as html is concerned -- if you're putting an image on your page, the "alternate text" is defined with an "ALT" tag (i.e. ALT="blah blah blah"), so-called because this is the text that appears as an image placeholder if the image is broken or if the browser (meaning the person browsing) has images turned off or something. but also the text appears in a tool-tip-esque style (as plat pointed out) on mouseover().

BINGO! Figured it out... I can't stand how microsoft help searches will totally bypass something that's contained in the freaking program... anyway, if I right click the photo and select photo properties, there' s and alt text box there... thanks for the help!!

I'm sure this thread could be recycled for other website questions....

You can also put title="" for some html tags, ones other than images, like links specifically, to get a little alt tag like thing to show up. Eg:

<a href="yomomma" title="Click this to go to yer mammy">

I'd explain it more but you'll see what I mean better if you just try it out.
