Re: Stupid Deal of the Day on Musician's Friend

Post by Caravan Ray »

I need new headphones. I have broken my old ones.

I should take advantage of the strong Aussie dollar and buy from the US

Musicians Friend has these:
http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/pr ... 70553#used

but they only seem to ship used to Australian - not new. I don't think I want to put anything on my head that has been in contact with some smelly Seppos ears. They may have been used to listen to Nickleback or something.

Does anyone know of any other big online music stuff stores in the US?

NB - something like those Audio-Technica ATH-M40fs Precision Studiophones are listed as $79.99 in the US.
To buy the same in Australia would cost $168.00 in Australian dollars - which are now worth slightly more than a US dollar. Our retailers are really ripping us off

EDIT
===================
Hmmmm...this seems to explains it. Found another store who has in their FAQ

http://music123.custhelp.com/app/answer ... w/shipping
We can ship anywhere in the world but certain restrictions do apply. We are only able to ship to physical addresses, and certain manufacturers will not allow authorized dealers to ship their products internationally (specifically, Adamas, Adams, Akai, AKG, Alesis, Allen & Heath, Apple, Aria, Audio Technica....We encourage our international customers to shop our extensive offering of quality used gear, on which we have no shipping restrictions.

EDIT:
======================
Found someone on ebay who will ship a new pair for $35. That might be the go

Today's deal is a 25-note USB MIDI keyboard for $30. Looks like a decent deal, and much more compact than the Oxygen8. I haven't had much luck with ION stuff in the past but for $30, sure, why not.

A pair of MXL mics for $150 today:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/stupid

I've seen these guys at GC and the chrome looks sweet. I'm amazed these are already on clearance. I'm guessing you get mics similar to the MXL2003a and MXL603s. These mics would be well suited to the Okatavamod modifications.

http://www.oktavamod.com/

(FYI - I am currently really impressed with the CAD M179 microphone. You can also buy this mic for about $150 from a lot of places. It sounds great on everything! http://www.zzounds.com/item--CADM179)

Odd. I just added one to my cart. MF has been a little odd like this lately as they are moving to a new website and it seems like some people can access it and others can't.

If you are interested in this deal, I suggest you try again throughout the day just in case.

It says "sold out" on the musiciansfriend.com/stupid page but not sold out on the "more info" page, which still lists it at $50. I suspect that any orders made through the more info page will be "backordered" and then silently dropped, which seems to happen a LOT for the better deals on MF.

I went and ordered it anyway, though. I mean I'm pretty happy with Logic's mastering stuff but it never hurts to have more options.

Today's deal is $49 for an M-Audio Fast Track USB interface with ProTools M-Powered Essential. This could be a good first audio interface for solo Song Fighters on really tight budgets who are using their laptop mics and GarageBand or some equivalent free/pirated software.

I would just like to say that I really like the M-Audio Fastrak. It is super simple to set up and use and sounds surprisingly good. It has limitations, like no phantom power and only one input, but if you have a Sm57 and only record one thing at a time, you are good to go!

m-audio fastrack usb, and the m-audio usb producer mic are ALL i use... of course mine are several years old, and came with "session" rather than pro tools (lame) but i love it, and it is stupid easy to use, almost any program will talk to it... the list goes on. cant beat it for the money... i may buy it again now that its 50$... mine has developed a short that buzzes occasionally.

Today's deal is an MXL ribbon mic for only $80:

http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/pr ... sku=H69305

Any feelings on this one anybody? My reflex is "Ooh, fancy, ribbon mic, whoa, so cheap". But I've no idea if it's really any good or not.

EDIT: For those who need more cowbell, here's one for $7:

I bought a different cheap MXL ribbon mic when it went on sale a few years ago. I've been pretty disappointed with it. I'm probably not using it for the right things but nothing I do recording-wise is the right thing for it. It basically just sounds muddy. Maybe this one is better. I dunno.

Oops, I just remembered that my ribbon mic is a NADY, not an MXL.

Yes, but check the reviews - it seems to be fairly unreliable and painful to work with.
