One-word Songs

Post by jb »

There are some songs that say almost nothing, but seem to convey so much even so. Here's a thread to discuss them.

"Maps" by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs is an example. "Wait. They don't love you like I love you." It doesn't say much more than that, and it doesn't need to. Love that song.

I totally agree with you, jb. Maps may have few lyrics but conveys so much. It was, without a doubt, my favorite song of 2004.

Wait--"The Owls Go" has tons of lyrics. Great song, though.

"Stormy Weather" by the Pixies. "It is time for stormy weather." That's it, but there's something to it where I can singalong indefinitely. It's one of those lines that implies so much more than it should have any right to, and any attempt to dissect it beyond "cool" just ends up making you look foolish.

This song is cool.

I'm so tired.

I think "the owls go" seems like it has tons of lyrics, but it really doesn't...I guess it still doesn't belong in this category, though.

oh, also: it just occured to me (while we're on the subject of beatles):
"You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)"
"Your Mother Should Know"

also, does it ever annoy anybody when you've been listening to a great song for a while and then one day you realize it doesn't have as many lyrics as you thought it did? This happened to me with "Your Mother Should Know" and "What a Fool Believes". Eh...

surprised to see Architecture in Helsinki so well known. They must be better known overseas than they are here at home.

Just off the top of my head:
The plan, by Low
New day rising, by Husker Du

Also, the theme song to the Smurfs only had one word in it, right? "La?" And yet it conveyed such emotion.

That's a fantastic song. Don't forget 'Long Distance Drunk' and 'Convenient Parking.'

Also 'There Goes My Gun' by the Pixies.

Edit: I keep thinking of more. 'Natural Anthem' by the Postal Service and 'Interlude (Milo)' by Modest Mouse both make me really sad and contemplative. 'Your Algebra' by the Shins is also quite nice.

Edit2: One more. 'Disconnect the Dots' by Of Montreal.
