subsilver2 changes

Post by jb »

I've moved the site name and description to the left, and removed the "last time you logged in" and "current time and date" section from subsilver2, because it's fucking bullshit that takes up a half in at the top of the page.

If this angers you immensely, let me know and I'll put that div back somewhere else (it's just commented out).

I may also be moving the "logout" and "message count" and "FAQ/Search/Members/User Control Panel" links up into the blue-gray section to save us another half inch.

With the rest of the theme being so information dense, I just don't understand all that wasted space at the top. There's so much wasted space in these PHPBB themes that a lot of them actually have a "skip to content" link at the top of the goddamn page! What kind of idiocy is that?! I ask you!

Subsilver2 is my preferred theme, so thanks for showering it with attention.

The superficial changes don't matter so much to me personally, just so long as you keep people's avatars to the left of their posts. I don't have a great eye for design, so I never really noticed all the "wasted space" you're complaining about. However, I also don't mind any of the changes you've made so far. I noticed the logo move from the center to the left, but that is of no consequence to me whatever.

In other words, full speed ahead. Thanks for your diligent work!

I'm still more of a prosilver fan (subsilver is UGLY! and it puts the avatars on the right!) but I've switched to it since that's where all of JB's work is going. Maybe all the other themes should just be removed.

Prosilver is the one with the avatars on the right, isn't it? Subsilver2 is the one I'm using at the moment and it has the avatars on the left. Unless there's a toggle in the User Control Panel somewhere for moving the avatars around?

I'm happier with subsilver now that I've moved some of the link crap into the header. I really hate having four inches of unused junk at the top of every page.

I can't get used to the avs on the right. I mean, I could. Maybe I should say, I don't want to. And dammit, I've paid my dues in life! I am entitled to avatars on the left. This isn't Soviet Russia. :guy drinking vodka shaking fist at sky:

Er, right, I got confused what this thread was about.

Basically I like the one with the avatars on the left (subsilver) but you're putting all the good stuff (review thing etc.) in the one with the avatars on the right (prosilver).

While I prefer the strong color contrast of MWR, subsilver2 looks okay to me, it has "View active topics" at the top of each page and avatars on the left and a link to songfight.org in the header, those are the main things I care about.

Taking a quick look at the current fight reviews I posted yesterday, I don't see a "delete" button, but I do see an "edit" button. Did "delete this post" disappear or am I just not looking closely enough? Saving and reloading draft posts seems a little more complex than it used to be, but it does still work.

And I am seeing a link to "Review This Week's Fight" up in the grey matter at the top o' the page.

I'll stick with subsilver2 just to be able to give feedback on stuff that appears to become broken or made worse...

Naw, I've switched. I started on Prosilver but am now working on Subsilver. Prosilver does have the reviewer though, because PHPBB tells me there are like 1000 users or so who have that theme enabled vs. 40 on Subsilver. I assume the 40 are the active users, but who knows.

Anyway, I like Subsilver better at the moment, so the work is going there mostly, unless somebody whines about their pet theme not getting love (ahem, King Arthur ahem).

I do wish I could find a mod that would recognize mobile browsers and serve up the mobile theme on demand, rather than having to switch to it full time. Seems like there should be something that does that. *shrug*

Well then I am totally switching back to subsilver! It's not like I ever review fights anyway.

(Oh, and I see the reviewer thingamajig is on subsilver now anyway.)

Oh wow I like what you've done with the header.

You're not allowed to delete posts if somebody has posted after you. This prevents people in arguments from saying "I never said that". If you go and edit and just delete all the content of that post, we can still see you said something. *shrug* it's never really come up here before to my knowledge.

I'm currently using the board with your permissions, Charles, and I see that the only post I can delete is my own-- but only if my post is the last one in the thread.

JB, thanks for explaining the deal with deleting posts - I see what it's doing there. Everything seems to be working as expected. How wise of me to make your pet theme my pet theme :-)

If you do go in and do more hackery on the subsilver2 theme, would it be possible to include the "Active Topics" link at the BOTTOM of each page as well? 'Cause, ya know, I read a bunch of posts in a thread and then I want to go back to the list of active topics and I have to scroll all the way back up to the top of the page to see if anything else is fresh... if this is ugly to do, or you're hoping you're done with fixing themes, no problem. If it happens to be just copying one or two lines from here to there and you're doing other stuff, 'twould be appreciated.

Thanks!

So that's what the home key is for? I thought it was for calling my house phone. I've always been careful not to hit it, because my wife might answer. Does this mean that the help key doesn't call 911? ....this changes everything.

This may also explain why I keep hitting the $ key but I'm still poor...

I always wondered what that little anus picture above the "8" was for - until the time I summoned up the courage to press it:

Just for the record, recemt quotes by BLT and jast are not showing up in quote boxes, they are showing up with naked bbcode. BLT probably wants it that way, but jast at least has some class.

An earlier post by JB does seem to work for quotes. I am using subsilver2, don't know what anybody else is using.

In my quote of BLT's post above, both levels of quotes are showing up properly, but when I look at BLT's post itself, I see the bracket-quote-equals stuff.

KA. It's because this is the announcement section, from what I understand. I'm using subsilver and that's just how it's working at the moment. I guess your red milky way has all the tweaks done.

Lol, you third world people and your fascination with Uranus.

I forgot about that song. It has negative connotations associated with it, so I put it away and never listened to it again. But hearing it makes me want to re-record it with my new methods. That song was mixed down from my 8 track to a cassette tape, then plugged my cassette into my computer. Then I somehow managed to make it into an MP3. I've come a long way since my first song here at SF.
