I'm having a private party here at the Hoblit's Hideaway. As in... when I drink alone, I prefer to be by myself.
Last weekend when I was on-call I got two phone calls from two friends I hadn't seen in a year. I really couldn't go out so I made plans with them this weekend. Last night went well... hung out... had some drinks... it was cool. Today, I was supposed to meet up with the other friend after he got off of work. Never heard from him and I even called twice. Don't know what happened there.
QOTD: Do you have a close circle of friends? Or do your friends just come and go like mine?

A few weeks ago, I became the recipient of the generous gift of an organ, which I and some friends moved out of the donor's house a few days ago. Today, I invited some other friends for the innaugural breaking-in session. It's got a few glitchy notes (for some reason, the bottom five B-flats sounds all wonky), but all in all, can't complain. It was free, for chrissakes. Free.
Then, in the evening, I attended a reading/lecture by Margaret Atwood. If you ever get the chance to hear her speak, take it, please. She's surprisingly funny, even when speaking apocalyptically about the deterioration of the enviornment and all kinds of crazy stuff.
QOTD: Well, I belong to a Fraternity, so that group is fairly constant, but my non-Fraternal friends have always tended to come and go. Some of my friends stopped inviting me out to things when they found out about my intentions to pledge; some friends they turned out to be. The ones that didn't care, and were still able to see that I'm still Jon, no matter what crest I wear, I've come to recognize as the closest friends I've got. Those are the ones I asked to be groomsmen.

wow, generic, when i initially read your post, my first thought was that you were sick and received an organ (like a kidney or something).
stoner.
hey, ween was awesome! "roses are free" as the last of a 5 song encore. awesome instrumental version of the carpenter's "superstar" that gene ripped up. they played for 3 straight hours, with maybe a 10 minute break total.

I think I have more of a zig zag of friends rather than a circle. I have a few friends from work that I've done things with "off the clock", but my long time friends are all back home in California or scattered all over the place.
Now I'm all bummed out that I don't have that many friends.
But, Phil is my best friend... huh, I don't even get to see him very much. Cry.

I definitely have a close circle of friends. There are tons of acquaintances but only a core group that I would invite into my home.

Today was my youngest daughter's birthday.
I have mainly a close circle of friends, but also some that come and go.

I have a group of very long time friends, a few I've known since I was 1 or 2! We still get together once or twice a year, but sadly we're not in any kind of constant touch. So when we're together we revert back to high school, basically, with some serious discussions stuck in. We lead very different lives so I guess this makes sense.
I have a lot of friends that drift in and out of my space. Similar in that its very informal and we fall right into place when we get together or talk or email. But only a couple close weekly friends who I feel connected to.
My wife is my best friend, however. And that rocks.

I have my close friends, and I have my poker buddies. Close friends are always there for you. They'll come get you out of jail at 3am, loan you money, feed your dog when you go on vacation, etc.
Poker buddies are your best friends until you take their money, or they take yours. They won't even answer the phone if you call at 3am, they're always broke when you need a loan, and they claim to be allergic to dogs if you ask them to feed "Dogma" when you take off, AND they always try to bone your chick. But they're a lot of fun to party with.

Wow, QOTD and DRC are all one answer for me today!
I have a few separate circles of friends that I know around here (SF bay area). I don't really know any of them all that well though. Tonight that was more clear to me than ever when I was hanging out with a group I know from one of those community weblogging sites that I'm only vaguely associated with these days. They are very heavily into drugs, and it makes me a bit uncomfortable when the conversation turns to that, since I have very little experience with the subject matter and really I don't care for that sort of thing. So I definitely feel like a fifth wheel.
In Seattle I only had two friend-groups (the Spud crowd and the karaoke crowd) but I was very close to all of them, and I look forward to seeing them over Thanksgiving.

Sorry Roymond - but for some reason I was reminded of this thread from long ago, and your claim that you would be played in a movie by William Hurt. I'm now picturing The Big Chill and people smoking drugs and dancing around the kitchen to Motown songs. (I saw that movie again just recently - God it was awful). Please tell me I'm wrong.röymond wrote:I have a group of very long time friends, a few I've known since I was 1 or 2! anyway...I have a group of 8 close friends from high school. We all live in different cities - but our families get together same time/same place every year for a one week holiday on the beach. My friends and I get to act like school boys again - just older, balder and fatter - and get drunk and dance around the kitchen to Joy Division songs.

I have a group of close friends and we get together every weekend and drink and have a blast. It revolves around my friendship with one of the friends I've known throughout all of college. We basically drink and act irresponsibly and talk about punk and metal bands. And we start joke punk and metal bands.

Well, that was what people told me I looked like (in fact someone said it on Friday!), rather than any claim of mine about who might play me in a movie. Sadly, though, that is close to the scene I allude to. Except instead of college, it's high school...oh, now that doesn't help any, does it?©aravan®ay wrote:Sorry Roymond - but for some reason I was reminded of this thread from long ago, and your claim that you would be played in a movie by William Hurt. We have a couple different circles of friends, people we know from different places. Definitely close, though. Every once in a while we stick them all together. Last time we had a wine party there were 30 or 40 people in the house, heh.
