Re: Nur Ein III: Round Zero
I couldn't make it due to a medical emergency. I'll post about it on roll call or something later if I have a chance. In brief, my condition worsened until I was too weak and pain-ridden to stand or even sit for more than a few minutes at a time, until we eventually decided to go to the emergency room late on Wednesday night (this is after I saw a doctor who told me to go home and deal with it). I received medication and eventually a minor surgery, and I'm alright now. But due to having to catch up on all the sleep I couldn't get when I was here and couldn't breathe properly, and when I was in a hospital bed and still not in great shape, and having to make a follow-up appointment with the specialist this morning, my entry wasn't able to be completed in time. Any chance I could still make it in?

Rules shmoolz. I know how some feel about the rules. But I personally have no problem with late entries on the due "day". I'm a rebel.

I mean, Niv said go ahead at ~3 PM, I chuckled, wasted half an hour, went to the liquor store and got a case of beer, then recorded this. If I can do this in under 2 hours, is it really fair to everyone else to allow me in?
Maybe I'm just immature, but I chuckled a lot when I listened to your song.

Re: Nur Ein III: Round Zero
I am the saddest of all Minty people. Goddammit. I thought we had a full week, so got the title on Sunday, wrote it on Monday, refined it through the week intending to record it tomorrow (I worked a 60+ hour week, so recording during the week wasn't going to happen) and then browsing the threads discovered it was due today at 10am local time.
It is now 11:19pm local time, and I am going to go into my front bathroom and record the song with my uke into my laptop, and submit it. Production will be crap, I won't be able to sing loud, and I'll be submitting it late, which means I won't make it into this round of Nur Ein.
BUT I AM SUBMITTING IT ANYWAY, because otherwise it will languish in my head until the next west coast tour, where it will be played once and then forgotten about, and fuck that. You'll get the recording shortly.
(here's hoping I don't wake up the kids.)

Re: Nur Ein III: Round Zero
Submitted. Since it's not going to be in the contest, you may not have a chance to hear it, but here are the lyrics at least:
---
James Dean, he was only eighteen
when he made it; people said it was fated
I'm not sure, I'm just struggling and poor
I'm a waiter, I work for a caterer
I got some butter for Fabio once
he told me boy you ain't got nothin' to hide
Yes indeed, all you need to ride this ride
[chorus]
You need a Kick start, gotta get the right part
Gotta get yourself up on that screen
I need my big break, don't it make my heart ache
Keanu ain't got nothin' on me
I cut a steak for Tom Arnold
He told me I could really go far
Yes indeed, all you need is to raise that bar
(place for a solo that never was)
Rent free, live with my family
When I'm rakin' it, momma says she'll be takin' it
I'm not sad, 'cuz I'm really not bad
I don't need her, I've done community theater
I took a picture with Sha na na
They told me boy you ain't got nothin' to lose
Yes indeed, all you need is to rock these blues
[chorus]
Mylee ain't got nothin' on me
Flava ain't got nothin' on me
Paris ain't got nothin' on --
---
And now I hang up the uke for a while. Full time employee + full time dad just doesn't give me the personal time/sleep I need to be a musician and/or do things like notice when submissions are due.
and personally I thought it was a great non-optional challenge

Re: Nur Ein III: Round Zero
Minty, if it were up to me you would be in, as I felt that the main purpose of the [unofficial] preliminary round was to insure that 25 people enter Nur Ein (which, in turn, makes the elimination math work in the subsequent official rounds).
But it is not up to me. I still hope to hear your song.

Re: Nur Ein III: Round Zero
Not reviews, just lame comments after a couple of listens. I can't honestly say that there's anything here that I dislike. Tip of the hat to all.
15-16 Puzzle - Great sense of melody, whether worked hard at or gifted with.
Adam Adamant - Turbo charged yet laid back.
ADD - Son of Frank Black and Ted Leo.
Andrew Reist - Hero rock!
Billy's Little Trip - Singalong punkitude.
Bryan Kandel - Tea, not coffee, please.
Cock - See "Kicked In The Teeth Again" by AC/DC. Dig the half-step.
Embers of Autumn - Bittersweet warm-up act.
Frankie Big Face - Chilly train ride through rainy French countryside.
Glenn and Rachael - Coming on right after Greatest American Hero. I'd rather watch this. Uh, the show, that is.
Hoblit - Thick and crunchy, attitude is tops.
Jim Tyrrell - Stapling the wings to the pig is too cool.
John Benjamin Band - He-UGE synth, oh so sweet teeny voices.
King Arthur - Looks like you didn't sit at the green light too long.
MC Eric B - The power of positive thinking in action. Hooray for the sun!
Octothorpe - List and responses are too classic.
Paco Del Stinko - I'm fond of the skanky main guitar tone.
Ross Durand - Might as well spend it, we're all going down.
Sausage Boy - Dementia never felt so good.
Starfinger - King of the Krazy Jungle...heed the call!
Tex Beaumont and the Dirty Hearts - Missing Diana Rigg for me, and lame country licks from me.
The Worldly Self Assurance - Church of the way talented and catchy. Pastor Mel at the altar.
BONUS!
Sven - Tom Selleck as well! C'mon guys, 'fess up, it's OK!
Minty Handy - Wo bist du?

Re: Nur Ein III: Round Zero
Extended Deadline
Sunday, 12PM EST
OK, after a lengthy and vigorous debate amongst the judges, followed by a vote, we have decided to extend the deadline for Round Zero to tomorrow, Sunday, 12PM EST for several reasons, chief among them the desire to start Round One with 25 contestants. We feel like Round Zero, the qualifying round, is still a work in progress, and is a part of the Nur Ein where we can fudge around with the rules a little bit. However, for the official rounds of the contest we will be sticking to the rules that have been stated previously. Sorry for any inconvenience this causes those of you that have already entered. Next year the judges can state up front how this situation will be handled in case it happens again, having been through it once.

I, for one, object, based on my previously stated reason. You pays your money and you takes your chances. Now, like JB, I feel like I need to go polish it up a bit, just to make sure, especially since those who haven't entered have already have heard the competition, and know where the bar is.

Yeah, I feel the same way. This is a really bad decision especially given that the songs have already been posted. I've sent more detailed concerns to Niveous privately, but as long as we're weighing in, I think this kind of sucks.Spud wrote:I, for one, object, based on my previously stated reason. Re: Nur Ein III: Round Zero
I don't have official word, but I suspect revised entries would be accepted. Don't quote me on that, though.
Sorry to those who are displeased, but we can't please everybody. We're doing what we think is best for the rest of the contest. Next year the judges will know how to handle this problem in advance. (Of course some other problem will come up and piss people off.)
EDIT: Re: still not having 25 by tomorrow, that doesn't seem likely. Again, I'm not speaking officially here, but I think the primary intent is for enough of those people who previously announced that they would participate (and who may have even already written songs) to get their songs in to push us up to 25. That's only three people.

Hear Hear! Nur Ein is still young and the zero round just started last year. You can't expect a 3 year old to split an atom on the first try.Lunkhead wrote:Extended Deadline
