I meant North American music has been terrible (and I don't just write things off blindly; I've been very open, and have been let down for years). There is good current music, it just comes from elsewhere.

How dare a band become famous?! I hope every band I love toils in obscurity for years, never realizing their dreams.

Adam, I meant that the songs from this decade in the game are terrible, not that every song written in this decade is terrible. Of course, that is somewhat representative of my feelings on the decade so far as a whole, since the songs are supposed to be a compilation of the best of several genres. The best song by a mile is Chop Suey!, which kinda speaks for itself, both in terms of quality and release date.

DT's not obscure though. They've got a solid fanbase, and as far as I can tell, they're pretty well-off when it comes to the monies/prestiges.
Adam! wrote:You're pissed off at your favorite band getting more recognition and exposure because it will gain them casual fans? Nice. Andrew, come back from the dark side: we cannot lose another good man to the snobs and poseurs.
I have no problem with DT getting more recognition and fans, but it's the kind of fans that Rock Band brings that worries me. I've showed a lot of people DT's music, and they've all disliked it (except for some guitarists I know). But once Rock Band comes out, everybody's going to jump on the bandwagon. It's not really a big problem, but if you've ever been a fan of an unpopular sports franchise, and all of a sudden they make the playoffs, you'll know how I feel.

So you're conveniently overlooking the very next sentence, where I said that my original statement was "somewhat representative of my feelings on the decade"? Selecting portions of statements and making sarcastic retorts directed only to those portions isn't pedantry, it's ignorance.

Why so serious?

<serious mode>

Code: Select all

You misattribute ignorance and--judging from your tone--malice (but not sarcasm). You rebuffed my response to your comments by saying that you had actually been speaking of the quality of the game's songs (as opposed to the quality of the decade's songs); I simply do not believe you, as I feel your preceding statements flatly contradict this. My attempt to illustrate the incongruity in a wry and hopefully disarming manner clearly failed.

Because you asked: I did in fact see your subsequent statement, and felt that it supports my point. I omitted it from my reply for brevity's sake.

Be assured, it doesn't matter to me one way or the other how you feel about <fill in the blank>; I'm just clarifying my response.

Yes, but also with a little bit of disdain for all the new fans they've suddenly accumulated. All those people who weren't fans of your favorite sports franchise until they started doing well, while you've been sweating it out for years.

Right, Reist?

Oh, dude - I'm not a long time fan, but I know some. But you'll see what I mean if you go to youtube and search weezer. Half the comments on say it ain't so are about Rock band, not weezer. And yeah, I was like 2 when the Blue album was released.

At risk for getting completely off-topic for a thread that's supposed to be about video games, what happens if you search for Blue Öyster Cult on youtube? I'm not going to try it, but I'd bet you'll find something like 95% SNL cowbell crap. I don't see that you are making or proving a point. But like I said, we're talking video games here, and I'm done.

All I'm trying to say. Is.

I imagine hardcore weezer fans would be at least a bit annoyed that half the comments on Say it Ain't So are about how great Rock Band is. People start to appreciate music for the sole reason that it's in Rock Band, and don't dig deep enough to discover what makes the band so great.

As you said, I don't want this 'argument' to continue much more, but I just feel like you're missing what I'm trying to say.

Hmm. I first heard what is now my favorite Distillers song on Tony Hawk's Underground 2. I got into Freezepop because of Guitar Hero 1 & 2. Dream Theater... can't stand em! But I hope they get lotsa new "casual" fans from this Rock Band deal. Casual fans are awesome. What am I saying here? Nothin' much, I guess. Oh yeah, I don't like most of the new songs on that list either. Not even Chop Suey. Can't stand the whole "angels deserve to die" thing. Good band, tho, most of the rest of the time. Hey, yeah, so I like things and dislike things too! Go me!

(I just had to post something... I've been away for awhile. Oh, but hey, this is kinda funny: last time I was on SongFight, I mentioned that I would prolly be away for a bit playing with my new PS3. Interestingly enough, a drunken neighbor who's waaay into Dream Theater pressured me into letting him make me a "best of" mix, which, in the interest of fairness, I tried to listen to. The closest device at-hand was the PS3, and whaddaya know, after pausing the Dream Theater and accidentally leaving it in that state for like 6 hours... the PS3 died. So yeah, maybe my negligence killed my PS3, but I'm gonna blame Dream Theater.)

Isn't guitar hero 4 gonna do some kinda "write your own songs" thing? I think I heard that somewhere. Now, I think that's nifty.

Peace out, Gs!

OK, I played Rock Band last night, and it is bunches more fun than Guitar Hero. Turns out I'm halfway decent at the "drums". I don't think it really matters what the track list is... I enjoyed the shit outta playing Coheed & Cambria, Bon Jovi, REM... all sortsa music I normally can't stand! And my gal got 100% on the vocals for "Maps"! Woo-hoo! :)

If there weren't enough reasons to play this game- MC Frontalot is downloadable. And not just any Front song...a Songfight song- "Livin' at the Corner of Dude and Catastrophe". There is no official download date but if this comes to fruition, it'll be incredible.

Haha, that's freaking awesome! I sucked it up yesterday and bought 2800 Bill Gates points to download some extra songs. Lo and behold, there was Frontalot, right in with all the other stuff. My non songfighting friends were completely blown away, and made me prove that it's a songfight title before they would believe me.

As for the game, I have a roommate who is of the minset that people should just go play real instruments instead of wasting time with this retarded game. ~2 hrs later, HOOKED.

My only beef as a musician might be that the bass plays notes when your fingers touch the "paddle", not when they release it, and it isn't adjustable. It takes a major reworking of playing style to play notes on time.

I have been greatly enjoying playing RB2 and its wealth of downloadable content. It's very cool to have Front in there and I always get a laugh when my kids do that song. It's awesome to have a Songfighter in there....

...but I think there should be more Songfight on Rock Band.

We are a thriving musical community producing heaps and heaps of great tunes. I think it would be awesome if we could another song in the game. I wanna start a campaign to get another SF'er into the DLC. Anyone else think that would be a good idea?
