September the 18th of 2008

Post by EmbersOfAutumn »

G'morning/afternoon/evening.

DRC: Last day of work before vacation! Dear god, it couldn't come soon enough. The misses and I are heading to NYC for an extended weekend and then upstate to visit friends. Gonna see a musical and tour the city while we're up there. (It's been 3 1/2 years since I've been up last)

QotD: What song that you've written does your spouse/bestest friend say is your best?

I wrote a song about 4 1/2 years ago when I still lived in NYC that I still like more than most of my other songs. My wife says its her favorite song that I play, and I get the same sentiment from others. It's called Sand Castles Fit For A Queen and was part of my Beach Rock phase (I wrote about 3 songs in short order).

Ha! That's an easy one. Lemurs, which I wrote to play at our wedding reception. Probably my best vocal, too (don't laugh).
What musical are you planning to see?

Probably "Wicked". I'm an absolute huge Alan Menken fan, but I don't know if my wife and I could do Little Mermaid (Just seems like it would be a weird concept for live theater), so we've decided on his 'modern-pop counterpart' Stephen Schwartz (Composer and Lyricist of Wicked). Actually, I really like Schwartz too, and I've heard the Wicked soundtrack a few dozen times--and I've heard the special effects are something to see.

I don't have a spouse and girlfriends don't usually get into my music. I must suck.

My best friend has never really said anything about any particular song that has stood out.

My best friend HERE in Florida likes Joblito's My Darlin' Ruin and it made the regular Ghost Town Gridlock play list. However, he only knew about that song because he needed to learn it for Songfight! LIVE.

I must REALLY suck.

Thanks Niveous for bringing me down!

Hey, what did I do. EoA asked the question, not me.

QotD: My wife doesn't listening to my music, citing that the lyrical content is often too depressing. And I don't label friends as "best".

QOTD: My wife (Crash) likes the songs that she gets to sing :)

Hey, I got my new bass guitar back from the set-up shop yesterday and played it for the first time (we recorded "Paper Thin"), and I gotta say, what a monster! I took the insurance money that I got for the fretless and the 8-string, and I got an 8 string fretless (Brice HXB-408 - oddly, they use the same model number for fretted and fretless), and I absolutely love it. It plays like a charm, and the tone, dynamics, and harmonics are unbelievable - it's like it has a voice. It actually seems to growl when I play it. Wow, this is gonna be fun.

Wow, I don't think I've ever been yelled at because someone didn't have friends... That's the kind of thing that creates Evil Supervillians on TV shows and movies...

QOTD - I might get an occasional "it was alright" from one of music buddies. My ladyfriend hasn't heard any of my songs from this year, but in the past she kind of liked a couple. "Late For Babies" comes to mind.

Spud - I also played an 8-string bass this week, although fretted. Sounds kind of synth-like in the bridge section. Congrats on your new instrument. That's four strings with octaves, for those counting at home, not some mucka beasty.

While it wasn't mine, I played an 8 string bass for a few songs in a band a long long time ago. It was killer. I always wanted one but I could never have enough money to buy an extra bass I didn't need and wouldn't use regularly.

Mmm... a bass.... Yeah, that's my next purchase. Maybe next year. Or sometime. It's nice being out of grad school and having a real job (and not having kids yet), but I still have to budget these things. Guess I'll start putting some dough aside. ... damn responsible streak...

QOTD - My wife has a great line: "I love my husband, but I don't love his music." I really don't have the best voice and I don't make the kind of music she likes to listen to. (Makes recording weird; I'm lucky I have Fridays off).

drc: i keep getting all these shooting pains in my calves and ankles. Courtney has some weird pain in her side.. she had to sit around at the hospital for TWENTY HOURS.. in the end, they came up with nothing.. big fuckin' waste of time. Obnoxious health issues always seem to hit us all at once. This Sarah Palin thing has got me pretty bummed out.. I wish they wouldn't talk politics at work (my fellow kitchen-slaves are pretty into her, which I find baffling). Goddamn interesting times. No fun, I tells ya, ponyboy.

qotd: lucky me, Courtney really likes my music. I'm pretty sure her favorite is "slime will rise", or, rather, the newest incarnation of it. It's a track from my super-ambitious theme album which has been on the back burner for quite some time now. She also likes "wicked fine winnebago"... man, I wish I had the time to sink myself back into it.. oh well.

I just gotta chime in and represent for the double-fistin' method. Full coverage.. get the story from every angle.. "fair and balanced".. (ugh, that was really stupid..)

qotd: I don't show my best friend my music, and I definitely don't have a spouse. I'm a bit too self conscious. Maybe wait a few years until I'm up to the par at which they might actually enjoy it.
