10. "Paper Planes" by M.I.A.
It was those damn commercials for Pineapple Express that got me listening to this again.

9. "Calico Alley" by Berkeley Social Scene
So much songfight goodness all rolled into one band.

8. "Invisible Ink" by Made Out of Babies
MOoB's "The Ruiner" is easily going to be my favorite album of 2008.

7. "Revenge of the Nerd" by Zinkline
The song was released in March and I'm still playing it constantly.

6. "Ash Like Snow" by the Brilliant Green
The Brilliant Green greatest hits album has been getting a lot of play on my jukebox lately.

5. "The Day That Never Comes" by Metallica
After "St. Anger", I didn't expect this type of 8 minute opus from Metallica.

4. "Shut Up and Let Me Go" by the Ting Tings
Yes, the main riff is pure Franz Ferdinand. It's still a fun song.

3. "Who Is It" by Bjork
I finally got my own copy of Medulla. Finally.

2. "M4 (part 2)" by Faunts
No longer my number one, this song is still about 9 minutes of amazing stuff. And a great music video.

1. "Astronaut" by Amanda Palmer f/ Zoe Keating
"Who Killed Amanda Palmer" is shaping up to be a pretty good album. Plus, Zoe Keating makes things awesome.

Goodtime Johnny's Top 10, w/e 5th September 2008

1. The Last Shadow Puppets – ‘The Age of the Understatement’ – The best way to get up in the morning. The musical equivalent of morning glory. Set it on your alarm clock, you’ll see. Pretty much any song off the album would do but this one has the benefit of a video filmed in some mythical post-soviet Russia. And a creepy kid eating bread badly. Which is enough to elevate it to anyone’s top ten.

2.Leonard Cohen ‘Who by Fire?’ Am seeing Laughin’ Len in November on what no-one is calling ‘the last chance to be depressed ever’ tour. Again anything LC makes me quiver but this, this week, because it is probably the only list song that serves a real cumulative purpose by being a list.

3.Lightspeed Champion ‘Everyone I Know Is Listening To Crunk’ – It’s all in the hanging phrasing, man. If this album hasn't made it stateside, track it down and check it out. Beautiful.

4.Vampire Weekend – ‘Mansard Roof / Oxford Comma / A-Punk’ – I know, I know, three songs but the best three opening songs of an album since I don’t know when. The rest of the record tapers off dramatically but these is (are?) a trilogy of perfect pop.

5.The Kinks ‘All Of My Friends Were There’ – it’s really just the joyous slide between ¾ and back out into 4/4 that does it, with the tub-thumping. From this album I think I still like ‘Sitting By The Riverside’ more, (and intend to cover it one day when I can play properly) but this is such a bouncy music hall song colliding with a painfully wistful chorus that I can’t help but wobble my bottom lip a little every time it comes on.

6. The Rakes – ‘Open Book’ – rediscovered The Rakes debut ‘Capture/Release’ on a long car journey into the northern wilds. The singles are great but there is a sing-a-long almost glitterstomp (without the thai children) chorus to this little known album track that brings a bit of the 60s 70s and punk all together into one superb collision. Worth tracking down / digging out.

7. ‘D.I.S.C.O.’ (French version) by Ottowan – burning this on to a disc of my favourite disco classics for a certain event in the near future, I was struck by how joyous and funky this is. S … supersexy’, indeed! I intend to do a mash-up of this and D.I.V.O.R.C.E. Called D.I.S.C.V.O.R.C.E of course!

8. Divine ‘Walk Like A Man’ – Divine, as anyone who knows me, s/he is/was my hero/ine. Along with Karen Carpenter. Not that I would have had sex with her/him but damn, if there isn’t a better song to add to my (short) list of ‘songs that would have more meaning sung by a gay man’ this is it! (also includes ‘My Heart Belongs to Daddy’ and ‘Somewhere’)

9. Kid Creole – ‘Annie’ Because August Darnell is a genius, and the little pop operas he wrote have more significance/appreciative qualities today than when they came out. Wouldn’t we all like our songs to work out like that?

10. Alphabeat ‘Public Image’ – this is the MOST TERRIBLE cover version I have heard in my life. Take a song, don’t understand it, make it poppy but not in a cool Jackson 5 way, in a clodhoppin’ Swedish not quite getting the point way. relase on album and hope no-one notices. I NOTICED, ALPHABEAT! True story: I actually yanked the CD out of the player halfway through the song intending to snap it in half, that’s how pointless it is. All that said, good whistlin’.

10. "Psychosocial" by Slipknot
The result of constant brainwashing by Fuse and MTV has gotten this stuck in my head. I don't mind though.

9. "The Man with the Shovel is the Man I'm going to marry" by To Kill a Petty Bourgeoisie
TKAPB has the ability to make noise into beauty.

8. "Vorvoloka" by Die So Fluid
I'm excited about a US tour of DSF. Saddened that they are opening for Mindless Self Indulgence.

7. "That's Not My Name" by the Ting-Tings
Further exploration of the Ting Tings has unearthed another pop gem for me to enjoy.

6. "Nowhere Girl" by ATP
A 8 year old song from a Japanese band I used to listen to on the IUMA. It's Japan meets Darkwave.

5. "Four Minutes" by Madonna & Justin Timberlake
"Timbaland knows the way to reach the top of the charts". I really dig the percussion on this.

4. "Grimace" by Made Out of Babies
Slowly becoming my second favorite song on MOoB's "the Ruiner" album.

3. "Guitar Hero" by Amanda Palmer f/ East Bay Ray
Amanda Palmer has made 6 videos for songs off her new album. All have been boring. This was the best of the lot. Plus it's a Dead Kennedy on it.

2. "I Don't Care" by Apocalyptica f/ Adam Gontier
I just got the "Worlds Collide" album. A lot of good stuff on it. This is the best vocal performance I've heard from the lead singer of Three Days Grace.

1. "Astronaut" by Amanda Palmer f/ Zoe Keating
My wife just got the new Amanda Palmer album. It's been on brainwash rotation in the house. It's clear, this is still the best song on it.

10. "Stranger" by Made Out of Babies
This album just keeps gets better and better.

9. "That's The Way My Love Is" by the Smashing Pumpkins
I still have not accepted this reunion version as the Pumpkins but this song is a step in the right direction.

8. "Last Day of Magic" by The Kills
I've liked The Kills since I saw them live back in 2003, but I've been waiting for a song of theirs to blow me away. Finally.

7. "Center of the Sun" by Conjure One f/ Poe
Whatever happened to Poe?

6. "King of Pain" by The Police
A friend recently gave me a bunch of Police albums to check out. I forgot how good this song was.

5. "4 Minutes" by Madonna, Timberlake and Timbaland
Damn, this is catchy.

4. "Astronaut" by Amanda Palmer f/ Zoe Keating
It slipped out of #1 thanks to overexposure but its still a great song. I'm looking forward to hearing it live.

3. "Pioneer to the Falls" by Interpol
Whenever I envision what a Niveous full band would be like, Interpol comes to mind.

2. "Raise Kaiko" by Onmyouza
Epic Japanese powerballad. It has been in my jukebox for a while and over the last few weeks, it's gotten a lot more play.

1. "I Don't Care" by Apocalyptica f/ Adam Gontier
I'm still enjoying the "Worlds Collide" album alot and this is the stand out song.

Ma'am. And thanks! Physical Graffiti is definitely one of my all-time favourite albums on top of (probably) being Led Zeppelin's best.

The first song I learned on guitar was Stairway. I think my next Zeppelin song will be Over The Hills And Far Away. Perhaps a little ambitious at the moment but it'll happen.

Zeppelin Forever I saw this live on Friday. Very impressive.

The Niviverse Top 10 for this week. (Which I must say was hard to choose, there were a lot of songs this week that got a lot of play from me)

10. "Last Day of Magic" by The Kills
There is just so much good stuff going on in this song. I love the guitar in this and the cymbals.

9. "Separate and Ever Deadly" by The Last Shadow Puppets
J$ suggested I check this band out and he was dead-on.

8. "The World Should Revolve Around Me" by Little Jackie
I've always liked Imani Coppola. This is the "way too catchy" song of the week.

7. "Tsumetai Hana" by the Brilliant Green
I adore Tommy's (Kawase Tomoko) broken English. It's not bad enough to be grating. It ends up very charming on phrases like "I'm feeling myself again" (I feel like myself again).

6. "Code Monkey" by the Grammar Club
Remixfight has up a Code Monkey fight which reminded me how much I liked the cover.

5. "A Venomous Tale" by the Bastard Fairies
I've gotten past the initial "Wow, Yellow Thunder Woman is unbelievably hot" phase and now I'm digging the music.

4. "Put On" by Young Jeezy f/ Kanye West
I recently got over my hate of Kanye, thanks to his verse on "US Placers" by Child Rebel Soldiers. His verse here is one of his best.

3. "Raise Kaiko" by Onmyouza
One of the most amazing J-Rock ballads that I have ever heard. I just wish I could find a translation!

2. "Stranger" by Made Out of Babies
This may be the ballad (if you can call it that) of the Ruiner album, it is in many ways the most disturbing song.

I've been playing the hell out of this song for three weeks and still haven't gotten tired of it.

I've really enjoyed The Ruiner album. MOoB has really refined a great sound. I can only listen to it when I'm driving by myself to and fro. But I must say, pumping MOoB through my 1000watt system with 12" subs is absolutely mind blowing.
