The Gift of Music (SF's Holiday Cover Challenge)

Post by Niveous »

Last year, we had a blast with this and a couple of people asked me if we would do this again. So, it's on again. The Gift of Music. And this time I'm sending out the word much earlier so that we can actually finish sometime around the holiday season. :D

Here's the concept- anyone who wants to be a part of this cover challenge simply needs to post here, telling me that they're in and listing 4 songs. These 4 songs are 4 songs that you really like and would like to hear covered. Once the list of participants is compiled, the names will be tossed into a hat and paired off. From there, each participant will get a message telling them who they'll be giving the gift of music to as well as the 4 songs that person chose. The participant picks 1 song from the 4 and covers the song. Then on the due date, we post the results and everybody wins.

It's like Secret Santa meets Coverfight with incredible results. Last year's GoM was awesome. We had Glenn Case doing Megadeth; Jim of Seattle blowing everyone's minds with a Rancid cover; Starfinger doing Billy Joel. There were so many good covers, I can't even list them all. Just check them all out at http://www.soultreerecords.com/GOM1.html. (well, all except for Josh Woodward's. :P)

I'll take suggestions to the exact due date, factoring in vacations and the like.

So if you want in to this year's Gift Of Music, post here within the next 3 weeks.

Not sure if banning someone from this goes with the Christmas spirit. However, we could just send him a shitty fruitcake.

Guy's got time to win 100 songfights, but no time for my Christmas gift. ::sad face::

Oh county count me in!

My four songs - a female theme this year I think

1. 'Blue' - Elastica
2. 'Oh Daddy Oh' - Charlotte/Serge Gainsbourg
3. 'Rock Star' - Hole (EDIT: I always thought this song was called 'Olympia' but according to an internet check it's actually known as 'Rock Star'. It's the last song on 'Live Through This' - the one that goes 'I went to School ... in Olympia ...' etc etc )
4. 'Denis Denis' - Blondie

I missed this last year. Sounds awesome.
The way I read it, we're supposed to post 'em here, so here goes. I'm in, and here's four songs I'd absolutely LOVE to hear someone cover.

1) Thomas Dolby - Screen Kiss
2) XTC - Generals And Majors
3) Duran Duran - The Chauffeur
4) Joe Jackson - Is She Really Going Out With Him?

Thanks for reminding me, HInc.

If you put a song on your list, please we able to produce a copy of that song, just in case your giftgiver needs it

And as for the other questions-

No, we are not banning Josh. But if he wants in, he'll have to do a cover for someone new as well as a belated cover for Sober.

And no, Dre, I do not like to weld. I liked the previous one but I wanted something new for the new board. So I kept the welding theme but changed the pic.

And here is my 4 songs (subject to change within these 3 weeks):
"Pillars" by Sunny Day Real Estate
"The Losers" by Warrior Soul
"A Box of Sharp Objects" by the Used
"Termites Hollow" by Grade

I'd like to join in this year, but I'll have to get back to you with four songs. That will take a bit of thought.

1. Notorious BIG - Mo Money Mo Problems
2. Britney Spears - Baby One More Time
3. Fela Kuti - Zombie
4. Bach - The Aria from the Goldberg Variations (Glenn Gould does it best).

Dear lord have other people actually heard of the sneaker pimps? I thought only I have had the pleasure of listening to their cliche, boring and drawn out techno/crap.

Anyways, I'm interested in this, It sounds like fun and I loved the results of last years covers. So here are my songs.

Operation Ivy-Here We Go Again
Tom Leher-The Element Song
Ben Fold's Five-Philosophy
Electric Six-Gay Bar*

That seems like a good variety of genres. I can't wait to see what I get.

Is this completely independent from Coverfight? (Real question: Am I allowed to join this?)
