Re: TV on the radio ?
they were one of the bands at a music festival this summer. i thought they were pretty interesting so i picked up the album of theirs that was most recommended, 'return to cookie mountain'. i think it's good. not sure about the one you mentioned. they're kind of strange, but i like what they do. i bet they were doing songs from that album at the concert. maybe this post is not useful to you at all. heh.

Re: TV on the radio ?
I have both "Dear Science" and "Cookie Mountain". I think these guys have their own sound and it's pretty cool if not quite the second coming of whoever. Great rhythms, interesting melodies and neato loopage type stuff. But after a couple listens through each album, I needed to put it away for a while and listen to something different. Still, kinda have their own thang goin' on, and that accounts for a lot these days, I think.
Bringin' the stink since 2006.

Re: TV on the radio ?
I saw them for the first time on Letterman and they rocked it my way. It's kind of a "whoa, black and white dudes rockin' the fuck out." So I D/Ld some songs and I like them, but their live performance on Letterman was WAY better than the album cut of Wolf Like Me. Then I saw them live again sometime later doing their song Staring at the Sun and it was the same damn thing. I've been listening to the album cut for a couple months, then I see them do it live and holy crap, they rocked it out WAY better than the album. So that tells me that their record company/producer is making them fit a certain genre for album sales. The sad part is that the album cuts sound just like all of the New York art-rock bands. It's as if they all have the same producer or something. I'm already sick of that sound and it only started about two years ago with bands like LCD Sound System, who I also like a lot live better than the album cuts.
Ok, youtube is officially awesome and I'm going to prove my point. I found the Letterman gig.
Wolf Like Me - Album cut
Wolf Like Me - Live
I realize everyone has their own tastes and may like the album version better. But for me, they have a great natural hard edge flow and that is really important to me in a band. It's what separates pop stars from the real thing. I'll probably get bashed for that blanket statement.

Re: TV on the radio ?
I really, really liked the Young Liars EP. When the Desperate Youth... LP came out, it was good, but didn't live up to the promise of Young Liars. Cookie Mountain came out and and was kind of sophomore slumpy. Dear Science was better than CM, and is a good record. It ain't on my top five of the year... but I'd take it over the Fleet Foxes record any day of the week.drë wrote:i don't get them? how come their like in a lot of the years top 10-25 album list ?

Re: TV on the radio ?
I loved Cookie Mountain when it first came out, but after a few listens, it started to grate on me that every single song has the octave harmonies and feels like it's about to come unhinged rhythmically. I think Dear Science is one of the best albums of the year; strong melodies, powerful grooves, all the songs are catchy, lyrics aren't about your standard relationship drama and existential woe, and no two songs on the album are quite alike.
I saw them live a couple of months ago, and they played hardly anything from Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes, and nothing from Young Liars, which is still my favorite.
