Southeast Asia = hell

I'm not going to pretend that I have anything constructive to say about this unbelievable disaster. I guess I just think that it bears mentioning. The scale of this event is hard to fathom. I'm trying to put it in relative terms, and it's tough.

I imagine there are lots of folks trying to educate themselves about earthquakes and tsunamis right now, trying to understand what the fuck happened over there.

This is an interesting map of the plates, and recent activity along their fault lines.

still having trouble coming to terms with this. I have travelled to some of the places destroyed. They are some of my favourite places on Earth.

My wife and I would love to go over to help out (we are a doctor/engineer combo) - but with a young baby at home we can't really do it - it's very frustrating

I imagine we're all in a similar state of mind...it's far too awesome to conceive of what's happened over there. I too have traveled around Indonesia and my wife's family is from eastern India. It's all very numbing.

If people are confused how to help -- it's money, to the organization of your choice. I really can't imagine how enough supplies, food, medicine or materials could possibly ever be delivered. But the aid groups on the ground know what's needed (water, for the most part). And they need money, however much is possible.
