I think my total cost of pizza is around $2 or so for a single-serving-size one, although I haven't itemized it. Even if it costs the same as the frozen ones, it tastes better, is much more satisfying, and I know exactly what goes into it.
I make 4 pizzas at a time and freeze 2 or 3. But I do the same fluffy. I make my own dough, but I use wheat organic flour sometimes. The taste is a bit different, but It's easy to get used to. Like LoO, I'm "trying" to cut back on white flour. I've found that if I simply add herbs, garlic, onion, etc, to the dough, wheat tastes great. I have an onion wheat dough that is awesome! Not like onion rolls, because I use a cheese grater and the onion is more like a pulp. I'll add about a quarter cup to a full patch in my bread machine along with about 3 tablespoons of very finely chopped cilantro. I figured out at one time it was costing me about 4 bux per pizza. It sucks to think of the dominoes 3 for 15 bux delivered, but dominoes sucks. We've become a society of people just settling for crap.

Well, for the pizza I described, I would need to buy:

Some flour. Smallest bag is 2lb I believe, and that alone is 6 or 7 bucks. Would use about 50 cents worth in a pizza.
Quick rise yeast. Last time I bought yeast, it was 5 dollars for the smallest container. Again, probably 50 cents worth for a large pizza.
Mozza cheese. 750gm is about 8 bucks on sale. Would use 1/3 of that, so ~$2.66
Pepperoni. Enough for a pizza, sliced thin at the deli section, probably 3 bucks.
A small jar or can of olives (I mean, you can't buy them in bulk, at least not around here) $3, would use about 75 cents worth
Mushrooms. Probably a dollar from the fresh produce section.
An onion, about 25 cents.
Tomato sauce, 2 or 3 bucks.
Oven on high for half an hour to bake it- unknown$
My time- priceless (although I enjoy cooking sometimes, so this doesn't count)

Total cost for a pizza: $10.66. Total actual cost to buy all ingredients: $28.25. If I had $10 to spend, and wanted a pizza, I would pretty much be forced to buy a frozen one, right?

I agree, a home-made pizza is better, but you either need to redo your math, or food is way cheaper down there.
[edit] Ahh, you said 'single-serving-size', I'm talking a large one for 4 people. Still, multiply yours by 4 and you're at 8 bucks.

Look to see if you have any local natural foods stores with a bulk section. I buy all my flour at Rainbow Grocery these days. Their packaged flour is insanely expensive, but their bulk flour is amazingly cheap.

From what I see online, I actually have no problem with invert sugar syrup. It resists crystallization, and it tastes somewhat sweeter than the equivalent amount of came sugar, meaning that it's actually lower calorie (and better for you!) than cane sugar, while still having the same fructose/glucose ratio. It's certainly better for you than HFCS, which is often pretty much pure fructose (which is basically as insidious as simple sugars get); Wikipedia at least implies that most HFCS out there is HFCS90, which is 90% fructose and 10% glucose (compared to cane sugar which breaks down to 50% sucrose and 50% glucose), although HFCS55 (which would be nutritionally identical to invert sugar syrup and pretty darn close to cane sugar) is cited as being a very common variant, so it's not necessarily the case that all HFCS out there is the evil HFCS90 stuff.

Still, that's sufficiently vague that I still have no interest in letting much HFCS back into my diet if I can help it (and of course the pro-HFCS lobby makes me even more opposed to HFCS).

The way I read it (in the German edition of Wikipedia, though) is that especially for soft drinks, HFCS55 is most widely used in the USA. HFCS90 comes in because HFCS55 is produced by mixing HFCS40 and HFCS90.

By the way, if HFCS is used in Germany, it must be listed as "Glucose-Fructose-Sirup". If, however, it has a higher concentration of fructose than glucose, it must be called "Fructose-Glucose-Sirup". Fun!

Just came across this: http://www.bevreview.com/2006/04/07/rev ... over-coke/

Apparently, HFCS is not Kosher.... so each year Coke releases what the blog post calls "Kosher for Passover Coke" which contains sucrose. I'll have to check out the Kosher deli that's on my way home from work. :)

I'm kind of surprised that anything carbonated could be certified kosher for passover.

Why? It's not the carbon that does it. It's just the corn syrup.

Except, because of the aforementioned Corn Industry Lobbying, kosher for Passover cokes are like $2.50 a can. Sheesh.

Maybe it'll be cheaper now that I'm closer to the border. I know a lot of stores here in the south import cane suger sweetened Coke from Mexico.

Oh wait, I'm not drinking the stuff anymore anyway.

Yeah, look, I don't care if it's from corn, sugarcane, sugar beat, honey, dates, raisins, bananas, or whatever. Too much sugar makes you fat. Now somebody go back in time and tell that to me as a kid.

Caloric content isn't the whole story. It's a lot easier to gorge yourself on HFCS than on sugar. HFCS goes pretty much directly to the blood stream and doesn't give you a sensation of satisfaction (and also causes a faster and longer insulin rush, which is what causes fat to form to begin with).
