I'd be curious to see a big graphical map of songfighter musical tastes. From another thread Reist and I share enthusiasm for Porcupine Tree; yet he thinks the Mohawk tune so bad it oughtn't be here wereas I found it nicely trippy, lyrically cool and a stand-out from the pack. There's often surprises like that. Reist your vocals could use a bit more prominence (not sure how, EQ or chorus or?); I dig the power and the Tull-like chorus but the verse doesn't quite hold that promise.

I think usually fights are diverse enough to chill about the stuff which may sound like it was made just to annoy you (maybe it was, maybe not, moving on...).

No full reviews this time but since I'm posting I'll go to eleven. No review ≠ I disliked it. I remember best the tunes by Caravan Ray (fun and nicely understated), Hinsdale Patent (not my usual cup of tea but the pop had a welcome scar), IndiAdamJones for being funny and having variety (and I liked the rap), Jan K for a sweet song, Kasper for the phrasing, LML for overall atmosphere and voice, Ross for a political post-2021 shanty (though I didn't quite get why they had to perish, technically), Ch Ch (reminding of The Man Who Hated Mars) and Howl & Todd (sitar seemed a bit tacked on but props for the attempt, and the construction). There were a lot of good intros, too.

My song structure is simple enough because I want it to be. I'm not a fan of complex songs with bridges and choruses and all that jazz. Anyone else who wants to d it is fine with me, but I'm not let's say "experienced" enough to come up with something that blows your mind from beginning to end. My music is repetitive. I'm not going to apologize for it. I am in no way a music producer so my music is going to stay lo-fi till I become famous like the Jonas Brothers. I have a feeling that's not going to happen.

BTW that sitar setup you have is interesting; I might have to go buy a guitar cheap enough that I won't care if I accidentally mangle it and give that a try. I remember also hearing about a tuning that this folk guitarist named Davey Graham supposedly invented, that is supposed to mimic the sound of Indian raga. I think it's DADGAD or something like that, but don't quote me. I might have to look that up again and see what kind of a sound I get when I combine it with that whang dang doodle of yours.

I can actually sympathize with that. My songs get accused of being overly simplistic all the time. I don't really have a whole lot of training, classical or otherwise, so the directions I can go at present are pretty much random experimentation, redundant programmed beats, and well-trodden simple progressions played with power chords. I've really gotten to be a supporter of the whole "punk ethos" since I've started recording my own music. Having an "ethos" sounds a whole lot better than simply admitting I can't play all that well.

You work with what ya got. I just got a digital drum set and I have no idea how to play it, but I'm gonna use it for my next entry. How's that for DIY. I taught myself every instrument I play. I have half assing down to a science.

Shoot, me too. Someone should develop the SongFight Multiphasic Musical Taste Inventory (SMMTI), and refer to it fondly as "the Smitty." Example questions include:

28. If forced to chose, would you rather listen to Jandek or Temple of the Dog?
67. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: "Drummers are superior to drum machines."
Strongly agree / Somewhat Agree / Neither agree nor disagree / Somewhat disagree / Strongly disagree
98. Do you believe that your music is superior to most other Songfighters? Yes or no.
99. Do you believe that your taste in music is superior to most other Songfighters? Yes or no.

Abominominous - Nice bass and groove. Love the guitar tone and background sounds. The vocals are working for me. Well done, sir, well done.

Andrew Reist - Vocals seem better than I remember from previous songs. Could be more together, though.

Andy Sucks - What Hendrix song is this reminding me of? Voodoo Child? Hey Joe? It's lo-fi, but not in an obnoxious way. It's like hanging out at The Black Keys backyard barbecue.

Caravan Ray - I'm digging the panned percussion. For some reason, it's making me want to turn off your song and listen to 'Sympathy for the devil', but that's not your fault... I love that song. I like the vocals. The song isn't exactly sticking with me, but seriously... who can compete with the Stones in their prime?

Chopped Liver Meat God - Wooaaah, more awesome percussion. Why is every song reminding me of something else.... oh wait, this actually IS something else. Way to pull a Vanilla Ice. Vocals remind me of a slightly less in tune Filter. I dig these guitars in the chorus... nice. Way to sing with some feeling. And, you know... like you swallowed some sandpaper. Kinda goes off the rails for me with the falsetto. And some of the other vocals. It sounds like 5 people are singing this song and I like 3 of them. Hmmm... I can tell from the length of my review that the song is a bit long.

Chthonic Chthock - What are you doing to your guitars there? I think I like it. I think I like all of this... the concept and lyrics, the tempo changes, the vocals, the synths. Good stuff, as always.

Cobalt Stomach - Ok, starting off with a nice eerie sonic landscape. Overly dramatic verse vocals. But I could see them growing on me. Can you hear me, Major Tom?

Death Be Not Proud - Production sounds really muffled, and the playing is not exactly "tight". I love the way the chorus comes in, and honestly, I'm a sucker for this sort of early 90's female vocal.

deetak - Ohh, something a bit different from you, cool. Nice "broken speaker" fuzz. Reminding me of some more of the best parts of the 90's, mixed with your unique style. I could wish for some more variation perhaps.

Elaine DiMasi - Skipped.

Just kidding. It's good for a quickie G&G. I mean, it can't compare to the brilliance of... hmm... I dunno... let me pick a totally random example out of the air and say your "fun house mirror", but it's certainly nothing to be ashamed of! :P

FABULOUS PRUNES - This one makes a little movie in my head. One of the Pac Man Ghosts is lost, floating through a mysterious and increasingly sinister landscape. I hope he's going to be alright!

Fartin' in the Club - I wonder what would happen if I released a song where I just sang "hooowwwwwl down the chimney". I was slightly divided on this because at first I thought you were singing "no means no", and it was so random that it almost amused me, and I wanted this song to be set to a weird flash animation with a couple of creepy club kids, like A Night At The Roxbury , only creepier. Then, near the end, I realized the lyric is actually "no one has to know", and it stopped being even slightly amusing.

Gnome Alone - Hello, Mr Hum. I'm intrigued by a drum machine beat going that slowly. This sounds like a scene in an indie movie, where the awkward protagonist is writing it alone in his room, before he goes to his brother's bar mitzvah or something.

the Hinsdale Patent - This is reminding me of a bunch of things, but I can't put my finger on what. Oh, lets see... one of them is "cannonball".

IndiAdamJones - Oh man, I have that exact alarm... it triggered a pavlovian response where I tried to reach for a snooze button. I like those drums, turn em up.

Jake Lions Band - I really like the oddball synth at the start. Maybe calm down a bit with the bum bum bum bums. Or maybe not. This sort of songwriting is appealing to me. The music is really cool. The vocal is a little too off key for my tastes. This could be really epic if not for that fact. The ending is great... I might have to vote for this in spite of the vocals.

Jan Krueger - I can tell that you're not up to 100% on your voice, but it's better when the background vocals kick in. Very pleasant song... belongs on an album with your Elegy For Industry.

John Kloberdanz - Horse with no name aside, this is some good 60's style rock. If you EQed it to sound old, you might have gone a bit too far, because it sounds like I'm listening to it over a telephone. Then again, maybe that's just your recording setup. I like the vocal performance.

Kasper - Well, I've certainly heard this chord progression before... a lot. Isn't enough new going on here for me to get into it. Oh, well, I DO like the toy piano-ish sound coming in near the end.

Larry Knox - The vocals and overall sound make me picture someone singing this in a karaoke bar in a silver jumpsuit. Ooh, organs and flutes! I like this with the part of my brain that likes cheesy, campy things.

LML - Hm. I like it. I like the way you rhymed green with 11:15. Are you a PJ Harvey fan, because this reminds me of her, a bit. I'm really not sure what you mean when you say you don't have choruses in your songs, because I'm clearly hearing verses and choruses here. Anyway, lets just say I WISH we had you instead of the Jonas Brothers.

Lucky Spoon - This particular steel drum sound with that particular drum sound is rubbing me the wrong way. Vocal harmonies, nice. the rap... not as much.

MC Milk Plus - This is fun... why is rap so much more interesting to me with an accent? Enough changes that I don't get bored, which is impressive for hip hop.

Melvin - Hi Melvin! Nice phrasing.

Night Elf Mohawk - I really like the way this starts... the background music really needs to be turned up. I'd like to hear more variations... it feels like this is just begging for more to be done in the background. There are some things, but not quite often enough, and again, nothing is loud enough. I like that flute, and the swamp sounds. You're going in an interesting direction with this new band.

Paco del Stinko - Woooahh, deep voice... I like. Rocks pretty hard, that's all there is to it.

Pathetic Wannabees - It's pretty loose. I like that phaser guitar, and lead guitar tone.

Ross Durand - A nice concept, well executed. You don't hear enough filk on songfight. Basic, but charming.

The Sky Looks Pissed - Vocal phrasing seems off and rushed, but maybe that's what you were going for. I like the xylophone.

SomeGuyCalledNoel - I can get into stuff like this. Sometimes, for me, production makes all the difference. I can tell I'd enjoy it more if it everything was more crisp. Yes, I'm aware of how weird that is.

Todd McHatton - I'm just amazed that you managed to pull this off with the limited time you had, and the computer problems you were having. This is great as it is, and I can't imagine what I could have added to it even if we'd had the time... probably for the best it didn't work out that way.

The Weakest Suit - Remember that time we got hit with the shrink ray and fell into an empty soup can, but it was ok because you had your guitar? This reminds me of that. I like the urgent guitar.

ElaineDiMasi wrote: Howl Down w/ Todd McHatton - Heh! I like the choruses and the way you got the green eleven in there. I like the "gang", as usual. Musically, kind of a strange combination. Hybrid of your styles I mean. Do you guys like it? Quite honestly, I picture the Green Eleven moving a little faster than your typical sitar.
It's not among my favorites. The problem here was the inspiration eluded me all week, and I changed concepts 3 or 4 times, and finally the deadline came to get my files to Todd, and I just had to bang something out very quickly. Some people can work that way, but I think this song suffers from it. Todd was plagued by computer problems and barely got his part recorded at all. It was all very touch and go, and we both would have liked to have more time to work on it. I like the way our different styles merge... strange, yes, but for me it's a good kind of strange. Oh, the sitar isn't the sound of the Green Eleven... it's the sound of the city that's been transformed by them.

Thanks for the feedback. The reviews are all over the place. Some of you had positive things to say, some couldn't even finish the song. For those who gave me something tangible, I will keep it in mind as we go into TATOD. I will try to remaster GE with some of the suggestions, if I get time (yeah right), or motivation (on Sunday?), okay, sounds like I'm not going to get around to it, but thanks! I can keep the criticism mindful while I proceed. _jones

Ok, reviews o'clock. Is it just me, or does it seem like there are a lot of songs this week that kind of suffered from having to wedge the words "Green 11" in? I don't know. There were also some very good concepts, so maybe I'm just crazy. ...Oh, wait.

Abominominous - Haha, for some reason, industrial food dyes never even occurred to me. Great concept. Is that a synthesized drum beat? It could probably be punched up a little with the inclusion of the occasional flourish, cymbal hit, dropped/added beat, et cetera. I love the groove, though.

Andrew Reist - Not my kind of thing, but at least you've got a decent handle on the formula.

Andy Sucks - I'm assuming "Andy" is somebody else, some guy you know who sucks. Because if we assume that your name is not a lie, you cannot be the eponymous sucker. My only real complaint here is that it ends too soon. I was really enjoying that! I am a total fool for a sweet acoustic blues groove.

Caravan Ray - Ok, yeah, I do see the JJ comparison, but had I not read the previous posts in this thread, I don't think I'd have suggested it myself. Primary reason: Your song is very good, which is not something I am known to say about Jack Johnson. It might just be me, but it seems like (at least at the beginning of the song) the vocals are panned just slightly to the right, which makes my head feel a little unbalanced (with headphones on, anyway). On the other hand, I love the panning on the hand drums - a minor detail, but delicious.

Chopped Liver Meat God - Toto... Michael Jackson... does not compute... *fzzzt*... This does weird things inside my brain. I... I think I might like it, but... Huh. Ok, yeah, I'm pretty sure I like this conceptually, but it's a little hard to listen to. Between the guitars and the vocals, the listener isn't offered much respite from... whatever is going on here. Also, I have this sudden urge to beat the rains down in Africa. *bzzt-gurgle*

Chthonic Cthock - The nerd in me likes the science fiction spin... And the disco inferno in me likes the driving rhythms! Ha! I think you've got a winner here, sirs.

Cobalt Stomach - Well, the bit about the lyrics has already been said. Interesting to hear the two songs back to back, though. I like your beat pretty well. The vocals are okay, but I think they would have been better served to punch the delivery a little harder - you sound too relaxed for this song.

Death Be Not Proud - Nothing too outstanding, but not bad for a simple song. The vocals, though, and I know it's been said, have got to come out more. Sell it! Make me believe it! I'm betting this would be much better just given some more in-your-face-ness (which is maybe not a word, but I hope you know what I'm talking about).

deetak - This is pretty cool. I like the occasional trills and blips in the background - a few more here and there might help add some sonic texture. It's a good mood piece. I also (not sure why) tried listening to this backwards - it doesn't really sound that different than forward. That's just an observation, not a criticism. You know, in case you were wondering.

Elaine DiMasi - Uh huh. This reminds me of the Indigo Girls, except it's about being 40 instead of gay. It's not the kind of thing I'd listen to again, but I can hear it being received warmly in a San Francisco coffee shop.

FABULOUS PRUNES - I like to imagine that this is what it sounds like when robots masturbate.

Fartin' in the Club - This would work well as a base beat to build off of, but outside of The Club, it sounds a little stale. Also, it sounds like you've mixed up "song title" with "band name", possibly intentionally.

Gnome Alone - Meh. It feels like an incomplete idea. It's hard to say whether I'd have liked it more had you developed it further. I don't hate it, at any rate.

the Hinsdale Patent - This is okay. It's sort of forgettable, though. I'm not really hearing anything here that makes me sit up and take notice. The vocals are a little under-delivered, a little too timid.

Howl Down the Chimney w/ Todd McHatton - Ah, I like it. It's got that sixties psychedelia vibe without being a mawkish slave to its conventions. Yes yes, I will be grooving on this one in the future.

IndiAdam Jones - Eeeeew. Sorry, the snot reference isn't doing it for me. Unfortunately, the rest of the song is pretty middling. It isn't bad, but I just don't like it.

Jake Lions Band - This is the fantastic adventure of a middle-aged developmentally-challenged man-child and his brightly-coloured robot pal. It sounds like they are having quite a time. Oh, man, are they a pair! Ha ha. Look at them there, soaring through the sky on a fancy rainbow. ...Oh no, drums and danger! Tragedies and maybe learning about themselves! That is not the happy ending I was waiting for! *sigh* Oh well. It was fun anyway.

Jan Krüger - This is lovely. I like the ethereal quality of the composition. I can't think of much else to say, really.

John Kloberdanz - The structure is okay, although maybe a little too familiar. You've got some serious vocal clipping going on, though. It might just be the quality of the microphone itself, but I suspect you could get a nicer sound out of it if you turn the gain down. In Garageband, just slide that little "recording volume" slider down to the left. Good enthusiasm, at least.

Kasper - Kind of nice, very calm and relaxed. The bongo sounds a little bored, like it wishes it had more to do. I won't remember this later on, but I enjoyed the chill vibe once through.

Larry Knox - I'm torn. I like your instrumentals and your overall composition, but the vocals just don't work for me. I'm not sure what to suggest, honestly. I think I'm going to go with "good, but shows room for improvement." Ah, public school, you've served me well.

LML - Hmm, yeah, I can dig it. Pretty cool. You have a nice voice, and I like the instrumentals. I feel like this might be a bit more engaging as a more elaborate arrangement, with another instrument or two, or maybe a guitar solo bridge in the middle there.

Lucky Spoon - Haha, enviro-hop. That is so weird. This would make a perfect segment for, like, Sesame Street, or one of those other early-education TV shows. It's hard to take it seriously, but I like the music itself, and I can genuinely see kids getting into this, and getting a good message out of it.

MC Milk-Plus - Haha, Brit-hop. That is so awesome. Seriously, this is great stuff. The delivery on the lead vocals is pretty bizarre, but I think it works. Excellent production.

Melvin - Not your most exciting work, but still very cleanly done, very technically competent. Ah mediocre parenting, where would the arts be without you? Heh.

Paco del Stinko - Good sound, interesting chord progression. Yep, nice work on the rocking and/or rolling.

Pathetic Wannabees - Haha, okay. I like your riff there, you've got a good rhythm going. The mix seems like the biggest deficiency here - vocals and drums should both probably come up some. Good energy.

Ross Durand - Oh man, yes! Sci-fi folk-country ballad? Sign me the eff up for some of that. This is a little more optimistic than I think I care to be, but what a great idea for a song. Very nicely executed too, I might add. My hat's off to you.

The Sky Looks Pissed - This sounds like the kind of thing that's more enjoyable to its creators than to a random listener. You know the story behind it, you remember the process of writing and recording it, it means something specific to you. That's cool, I can respect it, but it just doesn't draw me in. There's not a lot going on musically, and I can't tell what's going on lyrically.

SomeGuyCalledNoel - I like it, but the lyrics are tough to make out. I'm not sure, but it sounds like it might be something to do with the fidelity of the vocal recording. Other than that, good job, it's got a nice reserved, melancholy feeling to it.

Todd McHatton - I didn't really like this at first, but it sort of grew on me as the song progressed. It still doesn't really blow me away, but it was an enjoyable way to pass a few minutes. I like your melody and instrumentation.

The Weakest Suit - The solo guitar-vocal distortion setup worked well for the beginning of the song, but not for the whole thing. I kept waiting for you to drop the distortion break out into a full-on rock and roll combo, just knock it out of the park. I feel like there was some potential here, but I ended up disappointed. You could probably, if you wanted, rework this into something really good.

Re: Like a pair of sunbathing mambas (Green Eleven reviews)

Stream of Consciousness review method - all written on first listen - so you get what I was thinking right then. Not heavily edited.

Death be not proud - pretty guitar - cheesy drums - tough to hear vox - going for an evanescnee thing? - good Ideas - production getting in the way - did you just say something about a sword? I generally believe lead vocals belong in the center - it makes them easier to hear - this song has lead drums (note listening on headphones). Whispered stuff is not quite audible. ok-

JK - is this recorded live or are the drum clicks for effect (Ross wonders to himself) - convincing vocals - call me late for dinner - invoking that cliche seems out of place outready. REminding me of where T-rex seemed to be coming from in the guitar and bongos day “What I hear I misperceive” good line. Freud reference similar to previous cliche. Enjoying minimalist guitar solo - perfect for this. Thoroughly enjoyable. Good +

Hinsdale Patent - good sounding - like the bass - seeming very 1992 college rock derived - didn’t I hear you on State Street in Santa Barbara? Overall this is coming off as application of a successful formula. Let’s hear you scream if you are gonna sing about screaming. I believe this last point is a major flaw in the performance.
Good-

Night elf Mohawk - I don’t believe you think this/know is crap - I don’t think so either - I also don’t think it’s a song. thanks for playing

cobalt stomach - over affected vocals - kinda cool backing tracks - “we are stardust” I believe this and love the quote (Did Joni Mitchell originate this?) some awkward lyrical rhythms. Whoa - you’re wailing!!!!!! this section really turned me off. neat job getting back into the song proper from there, though. On first listen I didn’t get the title connection. Ok- someone elses lyrics

Caravan Ray - bongos by apple - would love the bass more up front - nice groove - “traffic lights of love inside your eyes” great line!!!! - when is this gonna kick up a notch? - did you loop your guitar or play it all the way through? cool patter chorus - never kicked up a notch - Good

deetak - not grabbing me - hard to hear what’s going on

The Sky looks pissed - I think I get what you’re going for- if it was target, you’re barely hitting the outside circle - I like the rhyme. the verses are incredibly forced rhythmically. you need to do more editing on that I think - bells way too loud in the mix - Ok-

Indiadamjones - not a fan of dialogue at the front of songs - you lose me real fast. just not interested in this. thanks for playing.

Fartin - Is this really the song - any relation to the title? thanks for playing

Elaine - I wish the groove sounded more relaxed - the first “uh huh” should come much more quickly on the heals of the preceding line - the energy drops here. Cute lyrics - 40? where did that come from? what does that have to do with it? 11 is gonna be right downtown, isn’t it? not very eventful. ok

chthchtchthch - however you spell it - WOW - this gets right going doesn’t it? Ah green eleven is a planet? Interesting take. Very Catchy - neat, “Stardust” - who really wrotet these lyrics? I assume it is you. This is much more convincing - good work! Good +

Pathetic Wannabees - this sounds like me and my 16 year old friends in a garage in 1983 - except our singer was better. I get that this is Mad Dog’s deal - but I have never gotten Mad Dog’s Deal. just not very interested in this. Thanks for playing

Jan Krueger - nice doubled guitar. The melody is not very interesting. I say keep a focus on your vocals and let the guitar support it rather than the other way around. Ok

LML - petri? why a germ? make a wish - interesting take - ok

Melvin - the divorced dad blues - I like the 90’s college rock sound of it - drums are uncharacteristically loose - gets a little long feeling in the instrumental section - I think I get the title connection Green like naive, 11 like years old? good

abom - cool groove - I hope this kicks up and rocks soon - cause the words aren’t carrying it - hmm never did - ok

reist - this sounds like a spoof of itself - you actually sang chicka-chicka-chicka - it sounds like a bunch of drunk guys at a party singing along to a party song they like. I think the doubled vocals work against you - ok

andy sucks - nice guitar opening - ehh - sounds slightly incomplete - ok

chopped liver - beat it riff - mostly I feel it is not developing so it is boring. The words sound like they were made because you needed them - I’m finding the voices irritating throughout. thanks for playing. Why did you think 6 minutes of this was a good idea?

Fabulous prunes - Interesting - I have no idea about the title - not sure I’d call it a song. TFP

gnome alone - none of the rhythms are lining up

howl down etc.. - oh, kind of a twelve monkeys take-off? neat sounds - excellent group vox an neat verse textures - if that is an atoharp - it is being used excellently Good +

Jake lions band - huh? cool old synth sounds - hmm this is gonna be 7 minutes long? What’s that line from The Commitments about musical wanking? this sounds ambitious - but the ambitious product isn’t coming across. just incredibly long. tfp
Kaspar - I like the simple slightly poetic earnestness of the whole track - fun rhythmic choices in verse - agree with a mountain goats comparison someone else made.

Larry knox - some of this reminds me of some of the disco era CSN songs - probably the david crosby ones) lyrics a bit heavy handed ok

Lucky spoon - wow by the end of the intro I am a little bugged ... it continues - is this for a psa for kids saturday morning tv? That’s the only way I see this being plausible. I see you changed the title... ok-

mc milk plus - very well produced and delivered but I just don’t find the content very engaging - or the title take ok

Paco - rockin’ - I often have trouble connecting with your words - but the music makes me believe ... good solo - this is we’re always asking how you record - Good

Some guy called noel - pretty guitars - not a lot happened here _ I guess that is supposed to reflect the regretful tone - I have no idea what “I took the green eleven home” means or how it relates to the rest of the song. OK

Todd McHatton - sounds like all those 70s bands that tried to sound like the Beatles. Very attractive and nice color changes. Fun words - oh, there’s the mellotron patch again - seriously what is that? Is it a real mellotron? you work with colors so well. Good+

Weakest suit - why the heavy effect? the tune is just one note so far - oh good, it changed. I think the cadence on the title line is a bit weak for the flow and the weight that concept ought to have in the song - not sure what it means - this got a little boring for me. I wish the guitar playing was more varied or something. ok

Thank you - but I will not take full credit for that.

...the traffic lights on the street of love have just turned red..... Is that plagerism? I like to think more a respectful tribute.

I'm a busy man. I don't have time to play through a whole song. I think from memory I didn't even actually change chord at all - just used the handy Apple pitch-shift thingy.
