I'd just like to mention that the other day, independent cartoonist Harvey Pekar passed on. Rest in peace, Harvey.

These are pretty good. I feel like I showed up to a pants fight wearing a kilt.
If I had a dollar for every one of my songs j$ has called a 90s pastiche, I'd have $1 for every song I've written.

I am ashamed of what I just heard when i clicked on my name...the quality is so much worse than when i listened to it on my computer so i don't know what happened, but that's no excuse. I feel like an idiot even having my name there...wow

wow, i'm surprised at how quick i was able to do this! anyway, here's my commute-tested reviews:

ukelele train and the men - i really wish your vocal went up on the last chorus instead of sticking with the same melody. in particular, i would have liked to have heard the last “my friend” as an ascending melody.

young stoke aka young muscle - awesome beat. the lyric about ed hardy and collared shirts made me smirk as i walked to the bus. great production. i think the only thing i would have liked to hear more of would be some added vocal doubles during the verse for emphasis on particular lines. great tune, i want to hear more by you.

shitload of dolphins - wow, great harmonizing. i like the quiet, raspy vocals quite a bit. is that intentional or a byproduct of neighbors? either way, it totally works for you. i’m not finding a hook that’s really grabbing me, instrumentally or vocally, though.

state shirt - wow. just wow. great songwriting, there’s the recording is immaculate, and i love the sparse production. i don’t know what else to say except that this song is going to be really difficult for anyone to beat.

queef mcbeef - very negativland/almost older skinny puppy. interesting, but there’s nothing compelling in the mix. i feel like you have an ear for making unique noise, but there’s got to be a reward somewhere in the layers.

mc who izzy - i like the backing track here, but yeah, the vocals are a bit messy. if you don’t mind my asking, what happened technically?

master mann - i like the arrangement, but i feel like you need to sing a bit louder. you can tell at some points that you’re straining a bit, and the song is totally in your range. if it fits into future songfight schedules, try to find a time when there’s no one home, and just belt it out.

the idiot kings - me. i saw the fight title sunday evening and started recording it monday morning before work, so it’s a bit rushed. especially on the lyrical front.

just in case - what’s amusing to me about this song (nothing to do with your song), is how much the drums remind me of arcade fire’s “neighborhood #3”, and how different the two songs are. the vocals are solid and tight, but i’d love to hear a huge, funky bassline underneath. the lack of bass is actually a hinderance for this song, i feel. otherwise, good job.

manhattan glutton - i feel like the lead vocals could sit back as an “instrument” a bit more. i love the piano. it works very well as a juxtaposition against the guitars. i feel like the bass could sit a bit better...maybe add some highs around 2.5-5k to it, and compress it a bit more? i feel like right now it’s a bit too loud as a result of a lack of clarity, and cleaning it up a bit would allow the other instruments a bit more room to breathe.

a far off land - your band name is pretty appropriate. nice and spacey. i like songs that have their own atmospheres. great tune for listening with your eyes closed. i don’t really do drugs these days, but i feel like this would be a great song to get high to. the vocals, while simple, totally serve the song. great job!

the hate noise - beatlesesque in some weird way i can’t quite put my finger on. i’d like a bit more percussion. i love the atonal breakdown and the weird noises you have going on. very unexpected ending. maybe too much? i don’t know, i liked it.

cock - i’ve got to admit, after reading about your homebrew synth, i was most excited to hear this tune. can you tell us more about the synth? maybe some pics? i’m loving its sound. very 1983ish depeche mode. the bridge is great.i like this a lot. i’m gonna want to hear more of your stuff. this is exactly the great sort of stuff you miss when you go away from songfight for a while...

dunce - great lyrics. what i like about mcs who are hands on in making their own music (as i am completely, with no reason, assuming you are) is that the music meshes so much better with the lyrics. great stuff.

chekhov’s raygun - ah, nerdcore. with guitars! it would be nice to hear the vocals a bit more clearly; more compression and some high pass at around 100 hz would help that out greatly. while hearing pinch harmonics is always entertaining, i feel like the guitar should be playing more of a supportive role here.

votes are going to young stoke, state shirt, a far off land, cock, and dunce. great fight, everyone!!

Certainly. When this week's title came up I took stock of what I'd completed. And I was like, whoah, I've actually completed enough to have a reasonable synthesizer. So I screwed together some MDF boards for a temporary housing and picked some modules to throw in. I've completed about twice as many modules as you see in the picture; when "complete" it'll be six to eight times the size of the thing shown. There's no good scale in the picture; those are 1/4" jacks; each panel is 8 1/4" tall.

I seriously need to build a proper case for it, but I wanna do it in hard maple... which will be crazy expensive. :( Coupled with the fact that I have no woodworking skills, I've been putting it off.

Hi, kids! Time for more insults and blather. You're welcome.

Cock: Gets right into it -- minimalist styling -- good harmonies. Decent lyric. I don't know what genre this is -- there's so
many. I'll just call it music. Not bad.

Ukulele Train: I like the uke -- and the "breasts". Loose, in a good way. Nice little summer ditty. I feel like I'm sitting on a
deck drinking Coronas and watching the waves in the early evening sun. How about another round over here...

Young Stroke: Gangstas? Really? Kinda China is cool... Sorta California but more North Carolina.

New Result: Fairly good production for... what is this? And why?

Manhattan Glutton: Grabs me right from the start. Good change up. Excellent lyric and tension/release throughout. I really
like the use of noise. Maybe a whack solo for another gradual release? Very cool.

Mister Mann: Hard panned delay on guitar confuses my brain. Rushed singing on some lines makes my spleen twitch. I
was basically left feeling the need to stand up, stretch, and listen to 30 seconds of Manhatton Glutton again.

queef mcbeef: A temporally expanded vision of the last panicked seconds of the teen's lives. Self-indulgent, yet somewhat
intriguing.

MC Who Izzy: Yeah, I have Vista on my laptop, too. Sucks, doesn't it? Try to free up some memory, then get an external
interface. And watch the levels.

A Far Off Land: Ethereal. Sounds like my old Mattel Synsonics drums. Clear and kinda evocative feel is well played, but
lacking in substance, Mr. Bono.

Just In Case: Sounds good. That constant kick is a little distracting to me, especially when it gets off a bit. I like the vocals,
guitar, lyric, melody. Not bad -- just needs another part or two.

State Shirt: Ethereal taken to the next level. Well executed and spot-on moody, if there is such a thing. I need drugs to
appreciate this as intended.

Chekhov's Raygun: Guitar lifts this above other 80's Nintendo music, IMO. But it still is.

HATE Noise: This sounds like The Lovin' Spoonfull meets The Moody Blues on acid. Needs comp/limiting to bring
everything up a bit. Well played -- just a little too weird in a anachronistic kind of way.

Idiot Kings: Reminds me of The Thompson Twins -- Fred and Jim Thompson, actually. They also had excellent vocals and
impeccable production. I think it needs a little more variety in the structure and sounds, then release it.

Shitload of Dolphins: Good vox. Good structure. Good feel. Good playing. A one-off quickie well done.

DUNCE: I had hopes for this until the "drum machine" started, then the spoken disjointed hurried rhymes with gratuitous
fuck and shit ruin it. Decent story/lyric at times -- just not for me. Never had a need for angry music -- I mean genres. Lucky
me. (/rant)

Regards,
Stubby

Well, the beauty of modular DIY is that you can mix and match 'til your heart's content. I can use EMS oscillators, Arp waveshapers, a Steiner-Parker filter and moog style envelope generators. So... pretty much I'm just cloning all the good bits from everything and adjusting the output circuitry if necessary so it all plays nice together.

The synth itself is all CV (1v/oct). MIDI->CV converters are a must, though. Further down the road when I get to serious polyphony I'll build a new CV->MIDI interface to handle that as well as midi clock messages (so I can sync the LFOs and random voltage generators)

Okay, so my girlfriend and I split the reviews. Her parts are in parenthesis. And I'm nicer.

Chekhov's Raygun - Well, you're flowing better than last time. And what? Guitar? (This sounds like someone I've heard before, but I have no idea who. It kinda sounds like the guy from the bloodhound gang) You know, I definitely agree with that sentiment. The way that the mix is, it's kind of hard for me to understand what you're saying. (Trying to think of adjectives to describe it, coming up with none). (Your voice doesn't really match the music...you need some tetris music in the background. Or Donkey Kong. Or Mortal Kombat)

Cock - (This sounds like a more diva-ish Skinny Puppy...the gay guys would love this). I have to say, I really love the upbeat synthy stuff. If you did all of this synth programming yourself, you're an awesome person. It's a pretty awesome song. (This sounds like something I'd hear at the special olympics. The part right at the end was awesome .(THAT WAS COOL!) VOTE

Dunce - (Wow, that's a cool intro!) This is a pretty awesome beat. Though at 34 seconds, it's a little bit long. I'm trying to figure out exact who exactly you remind me of (You're kind of Talib Kweli-ish, mostly in the flow). Maybe you kind of remind me a little bit of Aesop rock. (I don't like that synth halfway through) I do. I'm impressed...good imagery, good production. VOTE.

A Far Off Land - Mmm, mellow post-rocky ambience. Your vocals are phased! (You sound too hard to sound like Radiohead...it's not that bad though...I dig the Tel Avon Tel Aviv type sound). The drum production and sparse production is really good. If the voice was a little bit more...in the front, it would sound alot better. (I agree). I feel like I'm just going to float off listening to this. However, if I wanted to drive just after sunset in a city, I'd totally put this on. (This is not bad to help you chill out! I could've used it at the airport). Yeah, she got a massive layover and almost had to wait over a day. (I'd drink a Mohito to this!) VOTE

HATE Noise - Well, this is certainly unique. I like the really intense vocal stylings. (I don't know whether I'm watching a western or eating at Texas Roadhouse). Personally, I prefer Texas Roadhouse. (It makes me want a baked potato). Mmm, baked potatoes are reallllly good. (WITH BACON. LOTS OF BACON). I love the falsetto that comes in around the minute and a half mark. It's delightful (I wanna put on my spurs...WHAT THE FUCK, SYNTHS). That synth. Well, that switches it up. And drones. Wow, this just got really, really up my alley. I love you. (WHERE iS THIS GOING...I WANT A BAKED POTATO). Wow. That was a weird ending. VOTE

The Idiot Kings - A bit...trebly. Which isn't really much to complain about (I don't know...). Wow. This sounds like Depeche Mode. A lot. (Wow. This sounds like Depeche Mode. A lot. Maybe a bit more originality?) I feel like I should be sad listening to this. Mostly because of the minor key-dom. You nail that falsetto though. Kudos for the good vocals. (That beat is catchy!) Man, that repeated vocal chant in the background is hypnotic. (It's a bird mating call!)

Just In Case - (Jamiroquai meets John Mayer). I guess I can understand the comparison. This sounds like the type of thing I'd hear at a music festival. (No, not John Mayer...maybe Jason Mraz). Well, she thinks one of those J.M. guys. This is catchy. Very chill. (Sounds like the stuff that those people that pretend to be really into Bonnaroo would listen to). I'm kinda bored though. Maybe I'd need to be in the proper music festival mindstate i.e. high as
hell to enjoy this.

Manhatten Glutton - (I don't know if you're trying to murder me or rape me...or both!) WHOA FUCK, GUITARS. Man, if you were less angry, I'd say this reminds me of NIN. Or some other incredibly aggressive band that involves numbers and tools. Vocal harmonies? Well, I can't say that I was expecting that. (The guy singing in the background does not need to sing). I feel like I'm trapped in a pool of 90's angst...soft piano bit and all. I'm stuck in a downward spiral of resting peace.

Who Izzy - Man, that's some sharp attack on that synth! OH MY GOD CLIPPING. Makes it kind of hard to understand the vocals...then again, I can't criticize people on fuzz. Very...lo-fi though. (You need to work on the flow some...or I just don't like your voice...listen to Mos Def and get some tips, sounds like you're trying to really hard to be Snoop Dogg). The beat is pretty rad though, in all of its distorted glory.

Mister Mann - That delay effect on the guitar is kind of distracting. This sounds like something I would hear a guy play at a coffee shop or a christian summer camp. (This reminds me of that teacher in Beavis and Butthead...that hippie guy! Let's sit indian style and talk about peace on Earth!). Well, I definitely feel loved. (Let's go read the Bible!)

New Result - Oh shit, I'm dancin'! Hmm. The title placement might be a little bit arbitrary. Very...housey. It doesn't really go anywhere though. No particular build...(90's electronic that just kind of repeats itself...if the ghostbusters went to a rave, this is what they would listen to). Okay, I'm two minutes into this and I'm just really, really bored. Tired of dancin'. Well, everything dropped out for a bit. (That background eh sounds like somebody getting poked...this is the techno equivalent of water torture)

Queef McBeef - (THIS IS AWESOME!) Yeah, I know. Whoever wrote this is the greatest musical genius this side of Merzbow. Sounds like they'd been listening to some negative land or something. And like wobbly bass. (It's like a fly hitting the mirror...I got two words for it: scrambled eggs). FRIDAAAAAAAY NIGHTTTTTTTTTS. FUNKYYY WEEEEEKKKKEEEEENNNNNNDDDDDDD.

Shitload of Dolphins - Hmm. What an intriguing guitar tone! And time signature and stuff. I feel like I'm listening to that college radio indie station I work at. (I don't like this...not even sure what to say about it). I guess the beat's kinda cool. I don't know, everything seems a bit dissonant. (What? Stuff?). I'm vaguely reminded of Broken Social Scene. Very vaguely. Actually, my roommate would probably like this.

State Shirt - This sounds like Deftones. (This sounds like Team Sleep). Wait, that's not that much different. And I like both quite a bit. (I dig that echo effect) It's so spacious, I'm floating in a pool of epic right now. Oh man, that reverb came in and the pads and the build in intensity. Wait, she was right, this is more Team Sleep-ish. Good backing vocals. Now I'm sad. VOTE

Ukeleke Train and the Man - (I'M IN HAWAII. YAAAAAAAYYYY. I'M IN HAWAAAIIIIII.) Except we're both in Alaska. Whatever, same ocean. My friend Madeline would love this. Maybe it's because she's a travelling uke player who writes happy upbeat songs like this. Except hers are more Kimya Dawson sounding, which this definitely isn't. I feel like sitting outside and grinning. (It's a campsong...IN HAWAII. CAMP HAWAII!)...the resort hired you because you were the cheapest. That said, it's not terrible. Makes me wanna get laid).

Young Stroke aka Young Muscle - First off, you named your album Alpha Male Rap. That's just enough to make me happy. (Long siggggghhhhhhhhhhhh...fat albert trying to rap) That said, North Carolina is one of my favorite states. Florida sucks. Never been to China. My other roommate is from California. (Are you white?) That said, swimming in the ocean off of the coast of N.C. is pretty rad. Florida sucks. If you wanna smell rain, come to Juneau.

Chopped Liver Meat God - (initial thoughts on the beat: Tricky Meets Gorillaz). Man, this is a very, strange song. The vocals are just a little bit off key. Wait...the entire song is slightly off key. (The rock part sounds like the guy in the background got kicked in the balls). Ugh...work on stuff being in tune. It makes it hard to listen to. The guitar solo is way too loud (yeah...). Whabam!

Just bcz - Your flow isn't unnecessarily on the beat, which is guess is kind of the point. It's very...dissy. The beat is a bit...underproduced. Man, music means a lot to me too. This actually reminds me a lot of Arrested Development. Only without the feel good vibes and the spiritualism and the african. You say crap alot. Some of these rhymes are a little bit lame though...if you just work on your delivery a little bit, I think I'd like this a lot more. It's actually not that dissy...it's just very YOU ALL SUCK.

I like the range of styles in this week's fight... I'm terrible at reviews so I'll just say that The Hate Noise and The Idiot Kings got my votes this week!

p.s. The background singer(s) on the 2nd verse are there because I wrecked the shit out of my voice by that point in the song.
If I had a dollar for every one of my songs j$ has called a 90s pastiche, I'd have $1 for every song I've written.

O.K., after seeing (and hearing) State Shirt's video I am convinced. I don't need drugs to appreciate this song. "I can't wait to die to see you again" is genius. As is the backup vocalist appearing. And disappearing. I hope I'm not kissing ass too much when I say you guys are awesome (please note lower case). That is extreme basement.

After having so many deadlines pass me by, I am compelled to review the late ones, too.

Chopped Liver Meat God: I love the lyric. It's so absolute. And true. I like the solo, even though it sounds like a cheap pedal. Very heartfelt song. But it's cheap felt. The kind that rolls up and falls off and makes a mess all over the floor. You have to go back and pick it up with your handy vac. God forbid you got it on the furniture. What a pain. But I feel your pain. It's not painful to listen to, though. It's good.

Just bcz: I appeciate the negation of what you're talking about, but you're doing the same thing. Irony? I think not. More like taking advantage of a genre. There's a word for that, but I can't think of it right now. I don't like the fact that lazy ryhmes spoken to a beat count as music, but oh well -- that's my problem. Give me something more. Something that I can pretend to live in my mind. That's what music is.

Question for Dunce, I really like your story and vocal styling and felt what you were saying was conveyed well but did you ever say "peace is rest"? Closest I heard was "Rest Peacefully" You were my favorite tune but so far I think you didn't meet the song topic. Peace is Rest is a LOT harder to do than Rest Peacefully and that was part of the challenge by my definition at least.

So far my favorite 3 are Dunce / Manhattan Glutton and Just in Case. I will probably vote for Manhattan and Just in Case. Still undecided on whether I disqualify Dunce or Not.

Chopped Liver was close to the top 3. Overall I wasn't as excited about entries this week. Many had good parts but were also dragged down by various shortcomings. Hopefully I will get time to review everything later this week but with so many entries and few songs I really want to keep it is hard to make time to review everything.
