Who's been to Turkey?

We're planning a trip for mid August (hot hot hot) and so far it's Istanbul, Capadocia and the Turquoise Coast from Ephesus to Kas. We've got 14 full days on the ground.

Anybody been?

Bring a bathing suit.

Make sure you do a Turkish bath (bring lots of cash: you're supposed to tip everybody). Do it towards the end of a hot day of walking around.

I loved Topkapi though it's super touristy. The Grand Bazzar, not so much.

I went to a music shop in Istanbul and played an ud and some other weird instruments and got laughed at because I played everything like a Western guitarist. In general I found I had to be really deferential about being an American---there was a lot of thinly disguised contempt. This was 1995ish.

One night we were at a somewhat rowdy pub sort of place and the power went out. The room was suddenly silent. After a second, some Turkish girl started singing some sweet folk song. It was soft and slow and beautiful and no one said a word. She sang uninterrupted for about a minute in the darkness. When the lights came back, everything went instantly back to normal. I'll never forget that.

Oh and if you're a war buff it might be worth the drive to Gallipoli. That was meaningful.

So yeah, Turkey. TURKEY!

Oh thanks, fluf. and while you are asking her, can you also ask her, if you have a turkey burger in Hamburg, they automatically call it a hamburger? Because I'm having trouble sleeping nights wondering about this and nothing comes up on Google.

My friend says that you've got all the good spots in your itinerary, although he recommends against going to a Turkish bath, as it's something that "no local ever does." I will try to get actual useful stuff from his wife.

Oh, he adds that if you're going to Ephisus that you should go to Sirince, which is "a really amazing mountain town."
