Here is something that everybody else seemingly likes (to do), but I don't get the appeal of: Complaining when there is any discrepancy between the nominees for the Golden Globes and the nominees for the Academy Awards. Also, when people complain that the nominees for Best Director are not the same people who directed the films being nominated for Best Picture.A thread for listing things that everybody else (seemingly) likes, but that you just don't get the appeal of.
People complain about that stuff? How lame.15-16 puzzle wrote:Here is something that everybody else seemingly likes (to do), but I don't get the appeal of: Complaining when there is any discrepancy between the nominees for the Golden Globes and the nominees for the Academy Awards. i don't get people expecting everyone to fit into particular stereotypes...

I don't get people who don't realize that stereotypes are often true and actually embraced by the stereotypee. (Not that Poor June is doing that. I'm just contrasting this "don't get" with his.)Poor June wrote:i don't get people expecting everyone to fit into particular stereotypes...
I fit within a certain group. Lots of things I do and attitudes I have will fit within that stereotype. I like Postal Service, for example. You can figure out a lot of stuff about me based on that preference. Other things won't fit. My affection for System of a Down, for example, crossed with a similar taste for The Mountaingoats and let's not even discuss how many ABBA songs are on my hard drive. Nobody is a perfect stereotype, but it only reflects an inability to self-examine when you insist that there are no stereotypes or that you don't have any traits that fit within one.
Advertisers stick you into groups all the time, and they do that because it's empirically proven to sell products. Even the individuals among us are marketed to based upon that very insistence upon our individualism. Ad companies that handle automobiles are always telling us that buying a particular automobile will display our uniqueness to the world, at the same time that the design of that automobile is preying on our need for sameness, security, and safety.

so true. I'm can honestly say I have no clue what I would be stereotyped as...
I do think that stereotyping is contextual...
i'm not saying i don't fit in anywhere... i just don't like the whole catagorizing people into certain areas... like cattle...15-16 puzzle wrote:The more adamantly people insist that they do not adhere to stereotypes, the more likely they are to confirm to a stereotype that they refuse to accept as real.
to me it's degrading
but jb does have some good points...
i'm not saying that not everyone fits in... to there stereotype...
God knows a lot of people try to fit into a particular group
it's all cool... i just don't like the whole idea...
i don't like pre-judgement...
people see me... and they expect me to be things i'm not...
and it's all just cause i 'look' a certain way... or 'act' a certain way
supposed to make me 'these' people... or somethin'...
just something that gets on my nerves...
but i get what you mean... i wasn't really talking about the advertising/corporate motives behind it...
which i can completely understand why they'd do it...
cause it works...

I always maintained that I do not fit any stereotypes, but then I realized I've been an eskimo-ski-ninja all this time.15-16 puzzle wrote:The more adamantly people insist that they do not adhere to stereotypes, the more likely they are to confirm [sic] to a stereotype that they refuse to accept as real.
Actually I've embraced the "angry nerd" stereotype with open arms.
I don't get: Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

I don't get Chardonnay. Can't stand the taste of that grape.
