Circle of Titles II

Post by JonPorobil »

EDIT: The songs (some of them, anyway) are up! Check out http://www.jon-eric.com/Circle2.html

Hey, last year I did a little sidefight that people seemed to enjoy, so let's do it again!

Here's the idea.

1.) Everyone who wants in announces their intention to participate (or not, I guess. If you'd rather your participation be a last-minute surprise, be my guest).
2.) Each participant thinks up a title and submits it to me. I'll give you two weeks, so if you want in, PM me a title by July 23rd.
3.) I randomize stuff up so that each person gets someone else's title, and send those back.
4.) Each person records a song for the title they get. Let's say two weeks for that; sound good?
5.) At the end, the songs will be posted, along with the revelation of who submitted what title.
6.) Titles are then up for grabs for whoever wants extra credit. Also, there will be an opportunity to for others to step up and record songs for the "stiffees."
7.) For the record, I'll be participating, too. Yes, that's a little unfair. Get over it.

Who's in?

Participants so far:
Jon Eric
Jan Krueger
Bad Boys at Bat Mitzvahs
Shlimminy Cricket
Noah McLaughlin
Billy's Little Trip
Paco del Stinko
The Real Sign
Who Izzy
Caravan Ray
Ranger Den
Mike Lamb
Suckweasel
Sockpuppet
King Arthur

I don't want to turn this into one of those sidefights that gets talked about for months and never done, but the dates are somewhat negotiable.

I would like to, but I'm going to be out of the country from July 27th through August 8th, so I can't.

By the way, here's how to make it a real circle this time. ;)

Shuffle the list of participants. In the resulting order, give the title of #1 to #2, the title of #2 to #3, and so on... and the title of the last participant to #1.

I'll mention this on Spintown in a couple days. Hopefully someone from SpinTunes will decide to join up.

Choosing a title is tough... I don't want to make it too specific as to pigeonhole someone into a specific topic, but at the same time, I don't want a lame random word mash title either. At least I can dwell on it.

Yes, that was part of the new plan. I threw in too many different randomization methods last time, and two of them cancelled each other out. D'oh!

Hey, I appreciate the thought, but I'm concerned about the low ratio of participation to commitment over there. Of the 60 people who signed up for Spintunes #3, only 37 even got as far as turning in Round 1 entries (for comparison, out of the 11 entrants who have ever completed a Songfight or Nur Ein entry, there were only 2 deadline eliminations).

If I were trying to turn Circle of Titles into a big high-traffic event with merchandise sales and all that jazz, it would have its own website by now and I'd be grateful for the cross-promotion. But as it is, Circle of Titles is more of a fun thing among friends; I don't mind if it never reaches a large audience. My music website you can cross-promote the heck out of if you want, but I'd prefer it if Circle of Titles stayed just among Songfight folks and anyone else who happened to find it on their own. I'd rather not overtly try to direct traffic here specifically for it. Thanks.

Oh hey, last time there was no process to determine a "winner." Do people think it would be better if there were votes and a clear winner this time?

I'm not very interested in votes but wouldn't terribly mind them, either. My preference is to do it the same way as last time, i.e. no official voting.

Yes. And do we win a big trophy with our name engraved on a shiny brass plate? Because I'm going to put it on my mantel.

....when I get a mantel.

Votes or not, this should be fun. I was doing songs to titles for years before I ever found SongFight! which is part of what made this place so thrilling to dscover. I'm tempted to use a fave from years past, but I'll make up a new one. Promise! (Not that anyone would ever know but, ya know? :) )

A winner would be cool, because it is a "fight" but you can switch it up somehow... Like where we vote on the song, but the unknown author of the title is the winner... Gives more insentive for awesome titles... Or not. A winner would be cool, but not necessary.

Winning should be insentive to be awesome, or have others be awesome, not to try and out do someone else.

RE: Cross-marketing. If it brings more interesting people here to SF! - why the hell not? I understand the logistics problem it could cause with this sidefight, though.

RE: Voting. Are sidefights usually competitions? It's usually just a cool optional way to challenge yourself as a songwriter. Everyone wins (which is the same as no one does, of course.) I'm ambivalent; I'll give it my best regardless.
