Re: In Time of Crisis, review songs

Post by Billy's Little Trip »

It's early for me, myself and I. Sitting here full of tea, good health and pie. In Times of Chrises such as thee. Reviews come easy for us, ourselves and we. :P

Berkeley Social Scene: Easy listening to soothe the soul. But such a long bridge, too empty to know. Musically wonderful, as so often from the Scene. Needs a little more energy, but overall quite keen.

Billy & The Psychotics: Sometimes neurotic in need of narcotics, breathes the voice of an angle and rock so bionic. Lead guitar that sits high on the podium, to create a new genre of metal called heavy Rhodium. ..ugh

hillbilly: Don't need to see your name to know you're from the hills. Just like Jed Clampett or the singer Bob Wills. This song was short and sweet, quite like myself you say. But it is well done, like a mignon of filet.

Jan Krueger: What can be said of a piece so Depeche? Not lacking of voice, but drums don't quite mesh. Although not bad, I'm speaking the truth. This musical martini just needs more vermouth.

Life in Decibels: Dynamically rhythmic with sounds so charismic. I groove as I listen but find no changismic. Not a bad start to this half finished song, but it even finished early, like a pre-ejacing dong.

Micah Sommer: Voices oh so barbershop, that work so well in this song. There is a pitch off here and there, but not enough to be wrong. If the electricity was out and no instruments to play, I'd get a group together and probably do the same.

Monkey Touchers: I like that you like to mic all your psych. It's fun to make noise, like riding a bike. But often I wonder if I'm missing the point, or is this over my head until I smoke a joint?

Monotone Destroyer: Destroyer, destroyer, the food rhyme deployer. Rappin' 'bout a crisis like Diane Sawyer. Pizza and gummy bears, pepperoni and mummies. This song gives me a headache in the pit of my tummy.

Naked Philosophy: What would I do in time of crisis? I'd drive around town and buy all the spices. I'd weigh them all out while enjoying this track. Then sell them in little bags like street corner crack.

Ross Durand: Ross Durand, the folk singin' man. Always a fine story and the skills that can. Do what you've got to do is human nature of course, and for me this song comes through with full G-force.

sonofsupercar: I was told of treble, the phone ripping off kind. But I hear not this claim, only rock that is fine. Sure a little polish can be useful for all. But for all to be polished makes a world full of dull.

Ux Mpuzm: This song scares me I must admit. Trying to put me in a trance like Hypnotoad shit. If I start waking up with blood on my hands, then you succeeded world domination as the Ux Mpuzm band.

The Various Artists: German industrial with no words of region. So just an instrumental with industrial seasons. A pounding beat that makes me pump fist, that makes me smile like I've just been kissed.

Yeah, something is very wrong with the Life in Decibels track. I was really digging it and then it just cut off at 2:06 or so and then there's 2 + minutes of silence. Is there a full version available somewhere Mr Decibels?

On first listen, my prediction is Ross for the win. Fantastic little song.

This is a short enough fight that I should have time to listen again before posting reviews.

I really liked basically all the entries this week, a few things stood out.

1.) I would buy the "DJ Ranger Den's guide to back up vocals" because she has perfect harmony always

2.) Ux is indeed a mad scientist/evil genius and my favorite this week.

Sorry for no entry, or full reviews... Gotz no time round the holly days

Micah Sommer - When it first started playing, I was like ehhhh .. but after the 1st 20 seconds, I realized how brilliant it was. Great barbershop quartet sound .. loved the harmonies. ** Voted**

Monotone Destroyer - Love the organ .. Very Sanford and Sons :) but that's it.

Life in Decibels – Good background music for a Movie Soundtrack. I can see it uses on like Bones, or NCIS (like when Abbey works on something, like a montage) anyway, Good track.

The Various Artists – Nice Instrumental. Again, another Soundtrack tune. LOVED the guitar sounds .. for an instrumental, perfect. **Voted**.

Ux Mpuzm – Is that Throat singing? OMG this was bad ass. LONG, but bad-ass. The voice was haunting, lyrics sweet. Very world sounding , and the key's were perfectly soft at the right times. But I feel like I’m Acid now.... had the same feeling when I watched the Doors for the 1sst time. Auto-tune … I hate .. BUT you made it work well. Cause you were not trying to hide your voice, but make it as an instrument. **Voted**

Billy & The Psychotics - AMAZING guitars and production value! Great vocals …. This hands down is the best song this week! Reminds me of the breeders, a little Stevie nicks and a SPLASH of the Runaways. I am In LOVE with the sound!! Gonna find all their Archives now so I have something to9 jam to in my car. *****VOTED******

sonofsupercar - Again this week, a lot of guitars .. that = Awesome … a lil grungy for me, but still cool. Wasn't thrilled about the vocals .. but still had it's charm.

Naked Philosophy – At first I was … ummm wow. Way out of tune .(but so I am 2/3 of the time), Love the lryics, and the background vocals sold it. But still, not enough for my vote. Need to work on levels a bit. It's a solid song. Can't wait to see what you have next week.

Ross Durand – Lovin' the acoustic and the percussion. A very DRIVING song. Nice Lyrics.

Jan Krueger - The 80's influence is Blinding. LOVE IT!! I am all about the 80's synth sound. Sounds like a bit of talking heads meets Cohen. Like the video game arpeggio in it. Nice Harmonies. **Voted**

Berkeley Social Scene – Nice mellow song. Music was entrancing. I even forgot I was reviewing it, and it was just playing .. I was lost in the song. The vocals were a lil off key at times... but I NEVER hold that against anyone .. I’m lucky to be close to the right key.) **Voted**

hillbilly – The Guitars were nice.

Monkey Touchers – I get the Dr. Demento inspired stuff .. but even the Doctor would cringe on this 9 Minute Disasterpiece.

Reviews! Now with 5% more helpful comments!

BSS - I like the groove in the bridge. I'm not a fan of the muddy vocals. I like the solo, but I think it would have been better placed immediately after the bridge - the chorus isn't strong enough to bear another repeating.

Billy & The Psychotics - Nice, sultry groove. I probably would have really loved this when I was 14. The style really reminds me of a band I think I used to like, but I can't put my finger on it...

hillbilly - Just about the time this song really feels like it knows where it's going, it ends, which is disappointing. It's a good start that could be developed into a decent song someday.

Jan Kruger - I like the music, but the monotony of the vocal melody is killing the verses. I would have let the buildup near the end disintegrate into complete sonic chaos rather than dropping back into another chorus, but I like a little chaos here and there.

Life in Decibels - There are some neat bits in there, but it seems like it ends just when it's about to go somewhere great. Is there really supposed to be 2 and a half minutes of silence attached to this track?

Micah Sommer - Neat idea. Could use a little flushing out and a bit more rehearsal.

Monkey Touchers - Q: What the hell is this? A: Ten minutes of my life I will never get back.

Monotone Destroyer - Just because something rhymes, doesn't mean you have to use it.

Naked Philosophy - Self-review: I recently got over a bout with bronchitis, so my vocal stamina is not what it usually is. I wish I had it in me to do a few more takes on the vocal track, and double it for the choruses. I'd still like to take some time to clean it up, but I'll probably save that for when I'm not working on other projects.

Ross Durand - Perfect. I love these lyrics. Very well done.

Son of Supercar - The intro takes a little too long to build up. You are right about the treble-y mix. Overall, a good effort, but it's not quite getting me there.

Ux Mpuzm - As I mentioned in Jan Kruger's review, I like a little chaos in my music. This, however, goes too far. There should be some semblance of structure to a song. The instruments sound fantastic, though.

The Various Artists - Well written and produced. It sounds more like a song that is waiting for lyrics than a complete instrumental, though. Instrumentals can be great, but I think this needs some lead instruments here and there to keep it moving.

Had to vote for Billy/Dj and Various Artists. Really dug Monotones backing, might try to steal that.

That's because you've never driven to work with me after a bear claw and 2 cups of coffee. I spit the mad rhymes. One time I rhymed "battle my rage" with "rattle my cage". Did I get a politzer? (spelling) NO! but I woke to live another day as an unappreciated musician, mother f***er! (fucker). :P

I like Billy's scheme,
but I don't feel like rhyming,
so I'll do haikus.

Berkeley Social Scene
That bass is the best.
I should have voted for this.
Vox could be crisper.

I wish that lone bass
or that upbeat verse came back
after the solo.

Billy & The Psychotics
You know how to rock!
And also how to produce.
Solid all around.

Hillbilly
Soothing and pleasant.
Doesn't get old on repeat.
Well, not for a while.

Same or similar
tempo as Jan Krueger's song;
makes for good intro.

Jan Krueger
Cool song, cool lyrics.
The frantic parts are funny,
but in a good way.

Better production
(for which see B & The Ps)
might be possible.

The meter changes
and the speed-ups and slow-downs
and that high synth--great!

Life in Decibels
I dig the phat beat
and that sample that cuts in.
Love the second half.

Lyrics would be nice.
Maybe some rap or something.
Good head nodding track.

Micah Sommer
Well thought out, good sir.
It'd be cool to see this as
a live performance.

Monkey Touchers
If not for your ilk,
newcomers would be daunted
by Song Fight!'s high bar.

Can't tell if trolling
or just a tad retarded,
but I am amused.

Monotone Destroyer
Texan mumble rap.
Ya know, it's not all that bad.
The organ's nice, too.

Shout-outs to Song Fight!
don't seem too out of place here;
they mesh with the song.

Naked Philosophy
Chose a good topic.
This could rock a bit harder.
Good tune and lyrics.

Ross Durand
Very slick, indeed.
Acoustic guitar master!
Moves at a good pace.

sonofsupercar
Warm riffs like PUSA,
sludge-filled riffs like sos,
in a funky march.

Sounds a bit muted;
could we turn it up a notch?
Still, this is quite good.

Ux Mpuzm
This song sounds the same
whether you play it forward
or play it backward.

The Various Artists
Clapton you are not,
but you guys made some sweet loops.
I'm stomping my foot.

------------------
I liked ALL the songs!
It's not wheat from chaff. Rather,
it's diamonds from pearls.

Sonofsupercar,
Ross, Jan, MD, and MT
all received my vote.

I cannot explain
why Monkey Touchers' oeuvre
so appeals to me.
