Re: Testing
I thought MG's sfbase.net was going to be the wiki now...?

Re: Testing
I certainly don't mind other people taking on parts of the SF world. My concerns:
1. The article for latest title redirects to "Has Been For Years" (which was the title posted in early October) and SFBase.net has no updates of content in the last 30 days. http://sfbase.net/wiki/index.php?title= ... es&days=30
2. MG's tenure is relatively short. People go away. I (and songfight.net) am unlikely to do so, even though my participation is a roller coaster. You, Lunkhead, are seemingly also unlikely to go away, judging by your tenure.
3. MG's wiki is like, the third or fourth attempt at a SF wiki, all having languished-- including the one on sf.net that I set up but didn't promote or push enough to keep going or get enough interest in for it to take on a life of its own. I think if it's going to gain any traction it will need to be fostered by the community as part of the sf.net family and integrated where possible into the other sites-- the sf.org main page and the sf.net/forums.
I like the idea of being able to link to the wiki easily from the boards, but I'm more comfortable having the wiki on sf.net if I'm going to link to it from the SFBB, so any problems with it are my fault/responsibility.
I would support moving any existing content from sfbase to the sf.net wiki. I would also be happy to make anyone interested in maintaining it seriously an admin.
I am also open to arguments in any productive direction.

Oh, also, I think Billy's post above is telling. He basically keeps a window open to the SFBB all day long, but was seemingly unaware of the existence of any previously existing wikis, like sfbase.net.

Re: Testing
Plus, MG is a cyber terrorist in my imagination. He probably has megabyte-you-in-the-ass clusters and terabombs planted all over this place just waiting for someone to disagree with him about something relating to Star Wars or if anyone says anything bad about Lord of the Rings. He'll get all worked up, throw up, then push the big red button.

Re: Testing
Clearly we should be using BLT's posts as indicators of all sorts of things.
Now that you mention it, I just noticed that the links to MG's wiki and my jukebox that Spud once put on the songfight.org page seem to be gone. Perhaps they got lost in the design changes that happened to the homepage?

Re: Testing
Yeah I dunno. Were you getting a lot of traffic from those links before they disappeared? (I suspect not-- I don't think a lot of people hit the links on the front page except the regulars...)

Re: Testing
I have no idea. Clearly I wasn't using them much because I didn't notice for a while that they were gone.
Anyway, good luck with the wiki thing. I think what's most telling is when you point out that it's been tried a bunch of times and never taken off. I think people here are into either shooting the shit on the boards or songfighting. It doesn't seem like it's easy to get any traction on any other activities.

Re: Testing
Yeah. I'll give it one more go, and try to add some stuff to the boards to make it simple to access and enticing to participate in. I may try to install one of those things that links the userbases together, though that seems like somewhat of a bucketful of work. Not sure whether I'm up for that, but maybe.

They were consolidated here, Sam: http://www.songfight.net/ and that was linked to the front page. Clearly, too obtuse for the average user.

I think this is wonderful. Anything that helps Songfight archive its history gets a thumbs up from me.

Re: Testing
Who said my tenure is short? I've been keeping it in sync with the archive and keeping spam off of it. Not to mention, there have been plenty of artists who have leveraged it to add information about their songs and musical career.
Your point #3 makes sense, but I recall making that point a few months ago and getting a not-so-warm response.
If you don't set up the wiki infrastructure correctly it's going to receive the same fate as you expect. Someone's got to make templates, placeholder pages, install extensions, and keep the wiki software up-to-date. Good luck to you, sir.
By the way, it would have been respectable to give me the heads-up before blindsiding me on this.

If I had a dollar for every one of my songs j$ has called a 90s pastiche, I'd have $1 for every song I've written.

Re: Testing
Hey man, no offense meant. You should know that songfight.net has been up for a long time, and the wiki has been on there for much of that time. I didn't just set this up now, I only started linking to it. I have been keeping the software up to date, but have NOT been doing the other things beyond my initial spurt of activity.
It's easy to modify the BBCODE to point to sfbase.net, but I didn't do that since it seemed to be languishing. And, point #3. In retrospect I should have pinged you to say "hey, is this languishing?" But hell, it's been weeks since anybody had a good dust-up on the boards. So with that in mind, fuck you Manhattan Glutton!
(Oh wait, never mind, I totally ragged on your song a couple weeks ago didn't I? I don't want to fight again!)
You my G, dawg, and as a fellow community member I certainly appreciate your efforts. I'm not aware of your arguments for keeping a wiki on sf.net, I'd like to think that if I were awake I would have supported you.
Not to dispute, but if there have been updates to sfbase.net, why does the recent changes list not reflect them? The "current fight" not having been updated since October and no changes to content in the last 30 days?
If you're still awake and on top of this, MG, are you interested in merging the few docs I have on sf.net with what you have on sfbase.net? And are you willing to keep managing it, with the addition of some other admin people to spread the load?
JB

Re: Testing
Ha, in looking at the main page history, I set that damn wiki up 5 years ago! Almost 6! And then the next update is 2012. So talk about languishing! I have no room to talk.
I'm having a spurt of updates and upgrades here on the boards and songfight.net, so this is part of that. I have something else I'm working on too that should be pretty cool. But it involves me learning a lot more about javascript than I ever have before, so it's taking a couple days.

Re: Testing
I update it with a bot. Bot edits are not shown by default when you go to look at changes. You are clearly unfamiliar with the workings of a wiki. That said, like Spud always says, I'm perfectly fine dumping the load on whomever wants to deal with it.jb wrote:Not to dispute, but if there have been updates to sfbase.net, why does the recent changes list not reflect them? Feel free to become acquainted with all of the drama my suggestion brought up here. I went through a lot of shit and put a lot of hard work into bootstrapping the damn thing. That said, people haven't seemed all that enamored with adding their own material. And yes, I already had a few admins, such as irwin and jast. It's like you just woke up or something... comb your damn hair!

Re: Testing
It only imports the latest finished fight, but yes, I never made the redirect from "current fight" automatic, which has caused some confusion.
Anyway, we're on the same team here, dickface. I think if it's going to be official, we should figure out how to make tighter integration with the archive so bots aren't necessary. What do you say?

Re: Testing
I would be so excited to produce heaps of content for this. I already do lots of Song Fight research because I want to know who played with who when and where and how it all came about and what the songs mean and all of that.
For me the trouble is that I am afraid of Wiki Technology and computers in general. I made an account and I went in to start Doing things and went "oh crap...this is written in Minbari!" and though I can deal with production and Songs and Fighting and the reasonable expectation that I not suck in these areas; I can't get my head around the Computery business that seems to come so easily to everyone in these zippy threads. It turns to white noise and I begin to drool. I think it is some odd primal fear. I am willing to deal with it in order to Help... but I am afraid I shall perhaps be annoying to those seasoned in Wiki Lore.
But I have lots of ideas and sometimes I like to switch tasks because I'm listening to y'all and would write about it because that's just what I do
