This morning, immediately after waking up and doing the things that most people do right after waking, I took my dog out for a walk. We jogged around the block for a while, and then returned home. I then downed a glass of water and went back upstairs to my room, where I booted up my computer and loaded up Cubase. In spite of my plans to finish "A Conversation" over the weekend, all I had was a bare piano part and most of a drum track. Since the fight was due in a couple of hours, even though I had a job to get to, I figured I'd give it a shot.

So I plugged in the bass and ran through that part, nailing it on the eighth take or so, then plugged in my microphone and sang it - oh yeah, the lyrics weren't quite done either, so I had to write two more lines of those as well. The last step was to finish out the drum part by filling in the last eight bars or so that had puzzled me last night. Finally, I mixed the whole thing down and set out to e-mail it. At which point I realized that my new router wasn't working properly. After troubleshooting the router and e-mailing in my entry, finally, I left for work. Still managed to be ten minutes early.

To recap: Walked the dog. Recorded bass. Recorded vocals. Finished drums. Fixed router. E-mailed song. Not bad for a morning's work.

Question of the Day: On a good day, what can you get done before starting your job?

qotd: Sometimes I can get a comic or a rough song sketch done before work.

But I'm still sick and still taking time off from work (although I phoned in for a teleconference today at least). The diarrhea is getting worse, or at least not any better, and it's been a week. This is frustrating.

Before starting at my job? You've got me way beat there. Maybe... listen to most of Morning Edition, grab a shower, check email, Facebook, Google+, write a quick email or part of a blog post and get ONE part of a track down (the bass, one guitar part, tweak the final mix). That sounds like a lot, but it's mostly a series of five-to-ten-minute-not-really-paying-close-attention tasks. Often, I run over time and end up rushing to work, which is not how I like to start my day.

However, once I am at work, mornings are my most productive time. I can burn through emails, readings, meetings, lesson plans and grading like nobody's business until about 1:00 in the afternoon. I wrote most of my book during intense morning sessions like like that.

I am not a morning person - never have been, never will be. However, I catch the bus to work at 6:20 every morning. On a good day, I remember to put on pants before going to work.

Well, the No Pants Subway Ride was just a couple of days ago. (Don't worry, the link is SFW.)

I don't work until 4pm, as the restaurant doesnt open until 5, so I get everything I need to do in a day done before work... Currently that consists of Internet surfing, Zelda, lunch, painting, cutting stencils, guitar practice, grocery store, pot, hygiene, driving around, playing with mtg cards pointlessly for hours by myself, occasional Fitzroy band practice, dog walking, laundry, any sort of shopping that needs to be done, oil changes.... Etc. etc. etc. I don't leave work until 11-12pm most nights so there is really nothing I can do after work except drink.

Hmm. Get up, feed kids, shower, dress, try to get out of house and kids to daycare. That's about it. Blah!
I have a lot more success on recording in the nights after my wife goes to bed, as long as I don't crash first.

QotD: Some days I surf, or take my dog Blaze for a run. Then usually cut up and dispose of the dead hooker from the previous evening. Read the paper. Make some French toast and bacon. You know, the usual kinda stuff.

I get lots done. I report for duty at 3PM, gotta get ready (like now!) 2:20ish. I can walk to work and love that. But yeah, music, errands, appointments, etc. I love 2nd shift. You can get up without rushing or sleeping 'til the last second. It sucks if you're a social creature, but I'm not so it's all good.

The question brings to mind an email I received from a friend the other day.

Some may recall when I recently posted a photo of myself meeting the Prime Minister of New Zealand, while I was wearing a comical inflatable sumo wrestler suit. Well, some 3 months after the event - a friend who was with me that night emailed saying:
"OMG!!!!! I just realised we missed the greatest opportunity EVER to tell the Japanese election joke!!!!!!

He was absolutely right. If I had have had my wits about me, my meeting with the NZ PM should have gone this way:

CR: Hello Mr Key, nice to meet you
NZ PM: Hello
CR: Tell me, when did you have your last election?
NZ PM: Hmm.... back in November 2008
CR: Really! I had an election just before blekfast

I am now going to have to stalk world leaders wearing that suit just so I get the opportunity again. And having a female PM here makes thing just that bit more difficult.

I have embarrassed myself at the cafe, reading this thread. I almost spewed tea all over the poor gentleman next to me because of the sumo thing. Ack.

QotD: I almost always start at 8.am. so all I do before work is get ready for it. I set my alarm for 1 hour before my shift starts.
To be fair, I don't get alot done AFTER work either. Unless you count watching anime and playing video games as getting stuff done.

And since I haven't seen a DT for today, I'll just put this here. I came home early by 2 hours today from work because I had another bout of chest pains. This is becoming a regular habit. I REALLY hate missing work. The last time I had it this bad was in August and I went to the ER only for them to tell me I had Acid Reflux and Anxiety attacks before charging me $1400+(bastards). So I take meds for the Acid and I stay mostly acid free (cuz I forget to take it sometimes) but they never gave me a thing or told me where to get anything for the Anxiety. Fluffy said something about meditation on twitter one time when I asked him about it a couple/few months ago. Might be a good time to get into that.
From spoken word to actual singing, I can screw up any style with style. :D

Yeah, anxiety attacks are a bitch. When I have one I just lie down in a dark, quiet room and count my breaths until I lose track of the count. Or if I'm feeling fancy I take a nice hot bath (and do the same breath-counting thing).

Emergency rooms are expensive.

This may sound like I'm joking, but if I think about sex and get an election, it cures my anxiety when I'm out in pubric praces. :?

...also, drinking alcohol. A dry martini works wonders.

Anxiety Attacks are not fun. I had one in New York and was glad that there were people from SongFight-THere with me because I would have gotten lost in the New York subway system. Loud noises are not nice or stress sometimes, with those.
I hope that things get better .....
