this is Kirk Covington. Tonight he played at a coffee shop some of us are kind of based around and where a friend of mine runs sound as well. This place (Ruta Maya) has a drum clinic on first Mondays every month, which is nice for me.
Also this guy plays at a jazz club here in town a lot so that's neat :)

I almost didn't go because I have been feeling personally low and awfully weird and anxious lately. I'm glad I talked myself into being social. It was hard but really worthwhile. It always is.

I ran into some old friends so that was outstanding and a real inspiring pick-me-up to hear some real exemplary musicianship. :)

apparently he also writes songs, mostly in the jazz idiom; and is a singer. He plays keys as well! I can believe it because he had eight arms and six feet and was like a blur !!!

Well, lacking a specific QotD, I'll just mention that the past six months ago, I've been going fairly regularly to the Xtra Ticket shows in Tempe. Grateful Dead cover band that has been around for years, a friend and I used to go see their previous incarnation as the No Hobo band back in the early '90's. Recordings at http://www.thenoodles.us/otheraudio.html (the Noodles are another Dead cover band that also plays here regularly, every Sunday afternoon at 4:20). The "Jerry" in Xtra Ticket, Dave Hebert, is now the official "Jerry" in the JGB, which is what the old Jerry Garcia Band started calling themselves after Jerry died. Which is cool 'cause that's how good Dave is, but is also a little sad 'cause it means XT will be taking weeks off while Dave is on the road...

Anyway, so how 'bout QotD: who is your local band / musician that you go see to get inspired?

Charlottesville, va likes to think of itself as a town of awesome musicians ever since Dave Matthews went global... But truth is, a lot of it is the same crap... But there are exceptions. Aside from yours truly, another local band I get really excited for is called The Mysterious Concoction. A good friend of mine plays drums, so I decided to go see them and have been hooked ever since. The frontman is local rocker/metalworking artist/madman Christian breeden who has a super cool deep voice, and a vivid imagination, and their sets often take musical side strolls into long stories about unicorns and headless old ladies. Always a good time.

Plus he obviously has a following that doesn't hurt the eyes
