This thread is the place to comment for this round.

The names of the contestants is in the file names eg - my song is:

genevievejonesandthechiefs_bti.mp3. (Don't ask why my name is Genevieve Jones - it is a long story)

But this is just Round Zero. For future rounds Niv will have a website and all will be made clear

Here is last years:

Welcome to Nur Ein. I look forward to destroying you. (This is Nur Ein - trash talk is encouraged. Or at least accepted.... Well - I do it anyway)

Do those destroyed go off with a tail-between-the-legs whimper, or do folks also do shadow songs, like over on Spintunes?

I think a tail-between-the-legs whimper is probably the best look.

Even better - is head over to Songfight proper and extract your revenge by winning there.

My rankings are as follows:

(I will listen to these and rate as I go - rankings will change)

1. Ligers with Attitude - this is awesome. You win.
2. Chocolate Chips: This grew on me the more it went. I like it.
3. Frankie Big Face - cool vox FBF! I have a grumpy curmudgeon surrounding me in my headphones! I like this. Nice crappy guitar sound too. I approve.
4. DJ Ranger Den - excellent Den. This is reminding me of the Triffids for some reason - one of my favourite bands of all time - but they had a deep voiced Perthling singer, not a girlie - whatever accent you have is - but, I like this a lot
5. BGM: Well done. I was entertained.
6. Idiot Kings: THis is pretty cool - I like it. DISCLAIMER: This some how missed making it to my iPod with the other songs - so I have only heard it through the dodgy speakers of my laptop. You are getting some benefit of the doubt
7. Snappy and Floyd: This is pretty damn good. Very entertaining
8. Rabid Garfunkel: You zagged. It got me. A Tom Waite-esqe ice-breaking saga will always get my attention
9. Chris Coggott: Good work and true to form. Let's hear you do better
10. Jon Eric: Very well performed
11. Ross Durand: Adequate
12. Sausage: Likewise, adequate
13. Wreckdom: I expect better
14. ADD - After I solve this Rubik's Cube, I'm gonna watch Family Ties then play some Pacman.
15. Boffyux Dudes: I liked the sound of it - but lost interest in the story pretty quickly
16. Joanne Abbott: Poorly executed (NB. I originally wrote "poorly executed, but I liked your singing - which is of course nonsensical for an a'capella song - but I am not quite sure how else to put that - I did like your singing - but this really didn't work) - but interesting enough for me to rate it higher than it probably deserves and wonder what you will do next.
17. Merisan: Not your best
18. WSA - Disappointing
19. Adamadamant - Welcome back Mr Ant. You can do a lot better than this. Is that a ukulele? WTF is it with ukuleles? Are you Polynesian? If not - put the Uke down. (I'm looking at you too Cashpoint)
20. Oystercatcher: Dull
21. Manhattan Glutton: I liked the bass sound. That is all I liked.
22. Gooey Caramel centaur: The mouth noises put me off. And the singing is pretty dodgy.

Are you just listing your top 3, or have you only listened to three songs so far?

I don't know why you couldn't do shadow songs if that's what you'd like to do. Regardless, ousted contestants are the ones that vote for the final NUR EIN! champion, so stick around... if you get ousted.

It's nice to be back. I know, this song kind of fell apart as it came together. I might have trashed it if we had been a bit further in.

As for the ukulele, you'll have to pry it from my cold dead hands. Actually I was thinking of buying a guitar, but probably not for this competition. I'll try to surprise you in the coming rounds.

Short thoughts:

Add - Great, simple, elctro. Nice screaming.
BGM - This is kind of cool. Slightly too long, or not enough variety, but good. I like the guitar.
Boffyux Dudes - Not a fan. Kind of awkward singing, your timing is not very good, and your rhymes often come in weird spots, the lines don't flow smoothly. Although your pitch is good. The main thing though, I didn't really find it funny :(
Chocolate Chips - This is ok. Nice tune. I like the ahh's. Not a fan of the high pitched vocal effect. Ooh, fade out, cool.
Chris Cogott - Classic Rock. This is well done. Not exactly my thing but I can't criticise it too much.
DJ Danger Den - Slick. Great vocals. Piano is lovely too.
Frankie Big Face - A big, full thing. Really enjoyable.
Genevieve Jones and The Chiefs - I listened to this on the train and I didn't really like it. I like it more now. I'm not a big fan of the lyrics, a bit cheesy maybe. I think without the rumble of public transport the tune and melodies are more appreciable and I must digg them.
Gooey Caramel Centaur - I like this. The recording is a little shoddy, but the singing is great and the tune is nice. Good lyrics, the bass is subtle but nice. The beatboxing is not great. Kind of slow too, takes a while to get going. But yes, good.
Joann Abbott - I'm sorry, I really couldn't listen to this. Perhaps with music it would work but I didn't relate to the lyrics, I found the tune kind of tired and nursery rhyme-ish. Also, unfortuneatly with an acapella the voice is under all scrutiny, and whilst you are better than a lot of people your certainly not flawless.
Jon Eric - Good stuff, as I expected. I like the hi-low singing bits. Some of the wandering organ at the beginning is a little off, distracting, but no major offences.
Ligers With Attitude - I think this is a good song. It suffers from the performance and recording. You've got weird spikes in volume and clipping and the timing of the instruments is a bit off in places. I still think it's a good song though.
Manhattan Glutton - Ok. Yeah ok. Attempting big things with the vocals, I'm not sure you quite pull it off. Playing and recording are good. The song is a little slow maybe, started to lose my interest after a while. You know, but decent, not bad at all.
Merisian - Slick vocals. Slick everything really. One of the best this round I think.
Oyster Catcher - Good signing. Weird tune. Very strange rain / shouting sample.
Rabid Garfunkel - Well, quite. Kind of interesting, I mean, I don't think this is going to be on my birthday playlist or anything.
Ross Durand - Yeah good. Great bellowing.
Sausage - Not what I expected from the name. Nice though, kind of chugs along. Not my favourite, but I haven't got any better criticisms I'm afraid. The singing is a little out of tune in places.
Snappy And Floyd - I like this. Perhaps a little long. You are great rappers, very good timing and the lyrics were pretty good too. I likes the samples, a nice selection and well used.
The Idiot Kings - This is nice. Maybe a bit over processed on the vocals. It does drag on a little, but it's not supposed to be a lively song I suppose. Good production, recording etc.
Wreckdom - This is fun. A little hectic. But good, nice song in there amongst all the skits.
Wordly Self Assurance - Another slick and enjoyable song. You guys are going to be tough competition again this year.

JoAnn.
For a long time, I lurked here on the boards and just watched the fights. But I always wrote to them and I have a ton of songs. Some of them are better than my entered fights.
Those are kind of like shadows. I was thinking of putting out my unreleased material one day - up on my site or something. I was even going to call the album one of the titles - 'Not In This Lifetime;' because I didn't get to do that round and I had an awesome tune.
So there's no law against writing songs and then giving the link :)

Once upon a nur ein Mr Minty Handy started a thread called "Nein". This was functionally the same as shadow songs. I always wanted to hear the judging panel do exhibition songs. I think this years panel would make some particulaly good stuff (and killer solos).

I'm blown away by the quality of stuff in this fight. Only a couple listens in, early faves are ADD, BGM, CC, Merisan, Ross, and (WSA of course). Lots of gems!

It's not my fault your sausage roll fingers are too big to play anything so delicate ... fyi, I haven't played, recorded or performed with a ukulele since December 2010, ever since every wistful indie f**ker in the world suddenly realised you could use it for contrast. I've spent the last eighteen months becoming super-proficient at the jews' harp.

Bill makes a good point - the songfight playa doesn't seem to show ID tags (or none of the mp3s have retained their ID tags in the transfer anyway) - I had to go into the parent folder to figure out who was who. Except Wreckdom. That could only have been Wreckdom.

What are the chances that while I'm listening to the song and as soon as I started listening to DJ's song, we had an earthquake! Dee, you really rock my world. :P

not a pun, we had an earthquake at that very moment for real.
