Re: Nur Ein VII: Round One
I was going to listen at work today, but I forgot my headphones. Woe is me. You probably won't get timely reviews from me this round. Sorry guys. Did I mention that Monday is typically my day off, and that I had to come in for eight hours of training anyway? Yeah, this is an auspicious start to the week.

I get to be the warm-up for both of you. I need to start listening in a random order. Or change my band name, Zadam Zadamant has a certain ring to itJefff wrote:Man, being bgm's opening act is not kind.

Part of my job here is to keep the judges on their toes, and make Merisan sound even sweeter than they already are.

Some really good songs this round. I HATED all the round zero songs and I still can't believe where I placed in it. I'll keep going but I can't care about the outcome or else I'll have to start shooting up and cutting myself... again.

Re: Nur Ein VII: Round One
Here's where I say something nice about everyone except Frankie. I
ordered the songs in a rough estimate of my preference. (You know,
after 1.5 to 2 listens.)
BGM: Clever and delightful. Also, sounds fantastic.
LWA: Hilarious, but not only that
AA: I'm a fan of your off-kilter arrangements. Nice song too!
Merisan: Beautiful.
FBF: You are a show-off.
CCogott: I'm glad you didn't get the chance to add anything to this because it really works.
CChips: Weirdness is fun. From these two songs, I'm impressed with your chorus-writing ability.
DJRD: Lots of clever turns. The buildup built up my enjoyment.
GJC: I like this kind of music.
MG: The rocking out genuinely rocks out.
WSA: Fantastic round. Leads really well back into the chorus.
IK: Your guitar tones are badass.
GCC: I liked the guitar parts, especially the solo. "There's always a right and wrong" is a good line.
OC: Your song is nice and well-served by the production. Cool ending.
JE: A hell of a foot-tapper.
S+F: Loved the backing track. Also, regarding the part of perceiving what people call weaknesses as strengths: Truth.
JAA: Lovely melodies. The vocals mesh quite well.
BYD: Well-picked synth sounds.
W: Cool guitar parts.
RD: I'm a sucker for that kind of outro.
RG: Creative! (Ok, that's lame, but I honestly do find your backing tracks creative.)
S: I liked the solo.

Re: Nur Ein VII: Round One
I would like to once again invite people to post their entries to SomeSongs:
http://somesongs.org/
For those who don't know, SomeSongs is a site where you can share links to your songs (in this case, you would use the link to your mp3 from the nur ein thread), and people can listen to, rate, and discuss those songs. Back in the early 2000s it was all the rage amongst the "classic" Song Fight!ers.
Nowadays, you can sign in with your Facebook or Twitter account and if you share a link to a song page on Facebook your friends and fans will be able to listen to the song right in Facebook. Fancy!
On another note, I enjoyed many of these songs. I'm very impressed with the ways folks fulfilled the challenge. frankie, your song is really great, and I'm glad to hear somebody give bgm a run for his money this round, but I could see the judges dinging you for lackluster challenge fulfillment. bgm, you are a serious contender, hopefully you won't win every round and make this whole thing painfully boring.
We'll see if you can defeat Puce as most winning-est, he won four rounds in Nur Ein II back in 2007. MG, the dubstep was a great surprise, nice one. Oystercatcher, you and your guitar, man, good combo, for me anything on top of that is gravy. Jeff, I enjoyed your song too and am happy to hear you making music again. (Where is that slacker JB anyway? New songs from you and him and frankie is like the Song Fight! trifecta.) Ross, I was excited to hear a song about the Winchester Mystery House, great idea. Ligers with Attitude, you're a hater, but at least you're a funny hater. I'm almost ashamed to admit, but "bgm should shorten his name to just 'bm'" made me laugh pretty hard. Good job everybody.

Re: Nur Ein VII: Round One
I reject this analysis. (although thank you for complimenting the song!) My song has TWO rounds, one short and subtle (the two-part choir thing that follows each chorus) and the obvious Frére Jacques quote, which I incorporated into the lyric of the song. Even the delivery of the repeated "Hey brother, are you sleeping" line is round-ish.Lunkhead wrote: frankie, your song is really great, and I'm glad to hear somebody give bgm a run for his money this round, but I could see the judges dinging you for lackluster challenge fulfillment.
The challenge states: "Must include a round." Respectfully, I believe you have a tendency to over-think these things.

Frankie, you're a teacher, you know a lot of "ish" and a quote = smart ass. I dig your song too.

Re: Nur Ein VII: Round One
I honestly don't see it that way, but hey, maybe I'm wrong. It just says incorporate a round so I did. And I thought I did it in a clever way. I think that part of the song is pretty cool because I related it to the thesis of the song itself. I could have quoted some obscure round none of you had ever heard and no-one would be raising these questions. I chose this one because it was obvious.glennny wrote:Frankie, you're a teacher, you know a lot of "ish" and a quote = smart ass. I dig your song too.
I had planned to expand the choir vocal part following the chorus to three parts and make it longer, but it seemed unnecessary once I discovered the Frère Jacques angle. Anyway, whatever. I'm a little sensitive to being called an "ass" of any sort--smart, wise, dumb or other.
