Re: Nur Ein VII: Round Three
My collab is a tad weird, which makes sense I guess. And by weird, I mean just a little - as opposed to a lot - which is sort of an improvement that I honestly hope continues (with me!) into future rounds. Nur EIN!!

Ha! Amazing. I was trying to squeeze in a Cock bassline too but couldn't make it work sadly.Generic wrote:Then you got a two-fer. They're up. Niv just hasn't posted yet. Check out the wiki: Unexpected Guest (Nur Ein VII)
If I had a dollar for every one of my songs j$ has called a 90s pastiche, I'd have $1 for every song I've written.

Best to leave the personal stuff of the boards. Or maybe post it in "Monkey Business."

Re: Nur Ein VII: Round Three
All I was saying is that I felt like I could squeeze something good out of Cock. You know, something juicy. But no matter which way I rubbed up the thing I just couldn't get it to come right. It was a very disappointing experience on the whole.Billy's Little Trip wrote:hurrr i emRoss wrote:Where is BLT when you need him?adamadamant wrote: I was trying to squeeze in a Cock ... but couldn't make it work sadly.
On a more serious note, all the songs are pretty good this week. I'm not sure if me and Oats will make it. Hopefully there's some secret nerdcore lovers on the panel

Re: Nur Ein VII: Round Three
Reviews!
Adam Adamant - The mix is a sucker here, the first rapper is way too loud yet still hard to make out the lyrics. It's kind of short and all over the place. The first chorus comes in before you expect it. The backing track, especially the guitars is super dope though.
Add - You have good flow. The lyrics are interesting. I like the encyclopedia salesman more than the devil stuff. That bass line is weird and sounds out of tune. I like the gameboy drums and scratching. The beatboxing is a bit meh.
Chocolate Chips - I don't like the filter on your voice. Sounds like your calling the song in. The whole thing is quite slow, it doesn't feel like it should be though. I like the guitar solo. Sudden ending.
Chris Cogott - I like the skit at the start. Nice guitars. Harmonies are good. The verse kind of ticks along, the chorus is nice, picks it up. I liked the ending too.
DJ Ranger Den - Your production is great. The 'parts' are awesome, like the harmonies, the way the guitars come in, the filtered drums. Your songs in the past have lacked a decent overarching structure, this does better but still feels like it could be better on that front. Pretty damn good though still.
Frankie Big Face - Good groove. I like the bridge part "battery of tests" etc, really nice to listen too, although it sounds like you do a key change when that bit comes in. I don't know, sounds a little weird, but I don't like key changes very much. Great production, singing, playing, etc, as usual. I only got the lyrical theme near the end, nice, seems well handled and fairly funny.
Genevieve Johnson - Nice skit. Nice guitars. Ooh, vocals start to let it down a little. Not too bad but not great. The change up, what's going on? Slightly crazy, not necessarily in a good way. It's like a second song, which is not a bad song. Is that MC Eric B? Props. It sounds like him. Rabid Garfunkel cheers me up again at the end.
Gooey Caramel Centaur - Pretty competent country. I prefer the second singer (that's Gooey right?) just because it's a more interesting delivery. It's nice, not bad, but doesn't knock my socks off.
Jon Eric - Kind of quiet mix. I like the piano, nice and jumpy. Not a super fan of the vocals, kind of thin, perhaps too high? Not really too bad though. The chorus is nice, I prefer it to the verse. Kind of long.
Manhattan Glutton - Full of energy. Great delivery too, especially the vocals. I like this one, not much to criticise
Merisian - Really rich sound you have. Great harmonies, great vocals in general. Both singers. Guitar solo is nice and weepy. Nice tune, chords etc, interesting. Sounds pretty sad. But sounds very pretty.
Oystercatcher - The start is bad, very messy, especially with the baby screaming. The deep voice comes in and kind of reinforces the kind of rushed novelty vibe I'm feeling. The more it goes the more I like it though. Some pretty funny lyrics. The tune and performance are actually deceptively good. A lot of fun once it's got going and I've gotten used to it. Sidenote: I liked the LWA version a lot (possibly more, sorry
)
Ross Durand - I feel like you should get disqualified for being able to collaborate with your own brother
Seriously though, nice song. Trumpets are cool. ooh, the prmup-prump bit, kind of nice, breaks it up interestingly. Guitar solo is cool. I like interesting arrangements, this is a bit hard to keep up with at times. Good production, recording etc possibly not the best I've heard from you though, a little shaky in places.
WSA - The vocals sound a little uncertain, like your not exactly sure which notes your going for at the beginning. There's a few surprisingly low notes chucked in which sound a bit odd. The filtered drums, I'm not a big fan of. The more up-beat bits (chorus?) is better, the singing is more confident and the guitars pick it all up. Generally my thumb is middle to up. There's a bit about 2:40 where the bass is doing a bit more in the quiet bit, I like that more than the other quiet bits, feels like we're going somewhere more.
Wreckdom - Holy funk batman! I don't really like the vocal delivery. The high-low bits even less. The bass is super-funk. The trumpet is cool. Wah guitar is nice, but maybe overdone? The yo-yo's are pretty jarring / annoying. Feels like there is some potential but the vocals and lyrics ruin it for me.
If I had to pick a winner I'd give Merisian the medal. FBF, DJ Ranger Den and Manhattan Glutton get honourable mentions.
EDIT: After a few more listens WSA and Genevieve have grown on me a bit more. I feel like I was a bit harsh above.

Several fine folks are posting their Nur Ein entries over on somesongs.org which is awesome. We could use a few more folks coming over there to rate the songs and maybe comment on them too. somesongs.org is way cool, check it out!
We would like to thank 15-16 puzzle for helping us out with some awesome lyrics this week. This is actually our second collaboration with him. He wrote the lyrics for our only winning Song Fight! entry, "Credible Threat".

Re: Nur Ein VII: Round Three
My 2 cents:
Adam Adamant – I do like rap with an English accent.
ADD – Fun.
Chocolate chips – You have a pleasant voice.
Chris Gogott – Good one. Yikes! My own personal worst unexpected guest nightmare.
Dj Ranger Den – I like your voice with this power pop, but it gets a bit wild.
Frankie Big Face – You don’t sound at all as if you were hurt. Catchy, cool key change.
Genevieve Johnson and the Chiefs –Raunchy, very raunchy! Kind of goes too deep into creepy-land.
Gooey Caramel Centuar – I like this spare style and the lyrical delivery.
Jon Eric – I really like this one. Mainly for piano and round/catch(?) chorus.
Manhattan Glutton – Awesome guitars!
Merisan – Very nice! A winner in my book.
Oystercatcher – Totally off the rails crazy. Not sure about all that screaming though.
Ross Durand – Go trumpets and guitar wah. Some sour notes in there, however.
WreckdoM – Funkin’ around on this one. Garfunkel scratches.
WSA – A class act once again.
