Naked Philosophy - fade in at the beginning is neat. Chorus has a nice REM sort of feel.
The full stops ("hits"?) are a nice contract to the straight-ahead feel the rest of the song.
There's some good imagery in the chorus and bride, fat getting fatter, thin wasting away,
playing games, laying tracks. Throw some of that goodness into the verses. Who/what is the "they"
in the second verse?

Paco - can't help but think of Primus with the cool bass line and unusual vocal attack in the verse.
I mean that in a nice way, in case it was unclear. :) Then the chorus comes in with the organ and takes it
in a different direction that's jarring a little. The bridge is a neat diversion. Quality guitar work as always.
Lyrics are good from an imagery perspective, and those images are well placed.
To me (and I'm just one asshole on the internet) it didn't seem like the end result (Once upon a time
I was just like you) followed from the rest of the song, which was the narrator giving a fat guy a hard time.

BSS - Your guitar tone is pretty great throughout here. I like the chorus with the harmonies,
and the "never according to plan, another day, fat man" is a nice turn.
That said, it takes a lot of energy (and multiple relistens) to make out a bunch of your lyrics. Good options
are posting your lyrics and/or adding some EQ/compression to make the lead vocals stand out.

Kenzie - Oh I dig me some ZZTop. Heh heh. Right down to the "howl howl." Attitude.
Gock block (small cowbell?) is a nice touch.
Harmonica solo fits perfectly. Lyrics are sparse, but that fits the style. Dig it.
If a blues band busted this out at a dive bar I might not even know it wasn't an old cover of something.

Cody - I also dig me some stripped down folk-country. Great song. Arrangement just what it needed. Djembe?
The chorus progression and the harmonies were a great changeup from the already good verse prog.
Lyrics are evocative and all flow logically but without being dull. Nice nice nice.

Supercar - Nice drums. I like how the riff reminds me of the BatMan theme. The arrangement is heavy and solid.
While the groove changes, it never stops being a groove. The lyrics are a bit of an enigma, I can't tell what
you're singing about. A car, a mechanic, reading a fable, fable not ending well.
The "let's just footnote everything" is kind of a neat phrase to throw in there. Appeals to my nerdy background.
I'm missing what ties it all together, and what it has to do with Fat Man.
But then I'm just some idiot on the internet. Despite the lack of undersanding I like the tune.

Radio Show - You have a great voice. Good blues tune to showcase it, too.
Neat song about your father, kind of cool that we know the backstory. Food imagery making me hungry.
I don't know a ton about the blues form, but I wouldn't have minded if arrangement on the chorus was
a little more different from the verses than it is. I bet some vocal harmonies would sound killer to fill it out there.
Well done.

Sausage - rockin the piezo acoustic (in parallel with a mic?), and though I usually don't care for that,
it fits with the rest of the tune. The syncopated groove is tight and lends itself well to the feel you're going for.
The chord progressions throughout are engaging and fit with the booze-hazy, TGIF cantina-by-the-sea.
Harmonies on the chorus are nice too. It all sort of reminds me of a vacation in Key Largo I took in college.
Lyrics don't demand too much from the listener (unless I'm missing some sort of deconstructionist undercurrent),
but that suits. The song gives energy rather than takes it away. Bet you could sell beer with this. :)

ADD - batman theme, nice. The low-fi angle grates on me (but that's just me). Feels sort of repetitive.
I got a rich/overconsumption is going to kill us sort of vibe from the lyrics (which I don't necessarily disagree
with) but just didn't get drawn in.
Probably not your fault.

TunersUnion - Most of what I love about all your songs is here - the consistent harmony, interesting chord
progressions, rhythmic as hell. I would have liked the vocals more forward in the mix -
the harmonies are so nice and lyrics good. I'd like it to be front and center with the rest of the song serving that.
I like the beginning and the end better than the fleshed-out middle part, I'm not sure why. Acoustic guitar solo is nice.
The lyrics make good pictures, of a disconnect with the world.

Pigfarmer - Kind of a downer song, but believable. Arrangement is pretty stripped down, not much to comment on.
Words are not terribly poetic but good images and it works since we've all teased the fat guy and then (most of us
at least) felt bad about it.

AdamDachis - And the flip side of that, playing the fat guy for laughs. Your imagery and detail is spot on.
Good voice, nice melancholy piano and pads arrangement.

GUNS - There's a lot going on in this arrangement. I like all the different textures,
contrast between classical acoustic, fuzzy bass synth, slap bass, piano bits, drum samples
I like how it opens up in the chorus.
Vocals are hard to listen to, the pitch is off.
Lyrics are straightforward, class warfare take on Fat Man. Starves under the poverty line is nice.

Johnny Cashpoint - Not sure if it's your accent or the arrangement but I get a total Pink Floyd
feel from this. Which is kind of cool. It builds nicely to the end.
Props for using "dysmorphia" and not making it sound strange. I like the lyrical approach,
as it's got a dark take on the psychology of being overweight and dieting.

Nobody, et al - Mine - wish I would have had more time to clean it up. Thanks for the kind words.

G.U.N.S. got a vote for the last 30 sec. of their entry. paco got one for his wacky ska style that i can never get enough of. Cody got a vote because it was unexpected, and had some impressive guitar work. the rest of you did well, but not well enough in comparison. i hope to have time to not only write full reviews in the near future, but possibly record a new submission one of these days. good work all.

I am fat. I am a man. I got a new car. The new car is old. Dennis wrote a song about it. Tada!

Thanks for the reviews, everyone. Keep 'em coming. I should be able to get some reviews written on Sunday. Or maybe Tuesday. Something like that.

I just want to state publicly and for the record that I only peripherally pay attention to Nur Ein...I did not know what Round 2's challenge was until I had finished working on this song. Therefore, it is only by complete coincidence that I satisfied the Nur Ein challenge with my main fight entry.

@nobodyetal: Throughout the song "they" = the modern Republican Party.

@j$: You're probably right about the BVs. I recorded them with the idea that they would just be there to fatten up the lead vocal track, which is how I tried to mix it, but the more I listen to it, the more convinced I am that they should be more prominent...

Sausage – I like the rhythm, melody and vocals. I don’t like the reverb and what sounds like a bit too hot vocal in places.

The Kenzie Chickens – I like this take in the vein of ‘300 pounds of heavenly joy.’ Blues with a touch of Tenderloin. A bit repetitive though, I wanted something more lyrically even though the break down at the end was cool. Yeah, I know. The song doesn’t call for it. I think this would be better live down at Mojo’s than streaming over the ‘net.

Pigfarmer Jr – The guitar sound is worse than I thought. After taking a week off and listening with fresh ears I like the song more than the recording, but it ain’t as bad as some of my entries.

Paco del Stinko – Cool bass line. Cool as hell arrangement.

Nobody, et al – I like the guitar playing and tone. I like the harmonies. +

Naked Philosophy – I like the chorus quite a bit. That’s a good line fat man vs thin.

Add – I like the contour of the melody in the chorus. The leap wise motion and the resolution of the melody at the end works well for me.

J$ - I like the vocal tone and the background vocals when they come in. The more I listen the more I like it. +

Cody Walker Jr. – I like the guitars. And the vox. Right from the start this sounds like an alt country rock band doing a song. Which I happen to like. Good vox on the chorus. +

Berkeley Social Scene – Vox not very clear compared to the simple arrangement of Cody’s entry which is unfair. Should I listen after a slight break? Umm… Naw, you’re stuck with my tired ears. I like the guitars. I like the arrangement, how you build instruments in small ways and then at the end it’s all busy and stuff. (Busy and stuff is technical jargon, but I think you get what I’m aiming for.)

RadioShow – I like the vox right off. And the guitars. And the simple, but effective, rhythm shaker. +

Adam Dachis – Slow solo piano hits me the way G&G hit some others. Immediate turn off. You, however, keep me interested with the interesting melody and the nice clear vocals and an unexpected chord or nice inversion here and there. The synth/string pad is a nice touch. Nice and low not to bring attention to itself but adding texture. I’ve not heard such a heartfelt delivery on lines about a penis or masturbation. Add it all together and damn it, I like it. +

G.U.N.S. – Competing bass sounds/lines? I’m not sure I like it to start but it certainly clears up and gives emphasis. I like the post chorus instrumental lines. I think there is too much going on for me, but I would have made it boring and not been nearly as creative, so you get props for making it interesting.

Sonsofsupercar – The vocal tone is cool. I didn’t think I’d like this at the beginning, but once you got going I was tapping along. +

Tuners Union – Layered/doubled vox works well. Another song that I liked more the more I listened. +

+ = vote.

Yeah...Me and Cody listened to Sausage's Fat Man a million times last night...I think this one is my favorite. It makes me happy...I feel like I am driving down A1A going to the fish Camp across from the beach to eat some oysters on the water. After listening to the song more I can hear the words better...I didn't even realize you were talking about a restaurant!!! Yeah...I am going back to give this a vote. I hope this one wins.

I listened to all of these just now, some good stuff. I won't give full reviews because I'm about to go to sleep and I broke my streak and didn't enter a song this week. But I thought the Cody Walker Jr song was really good... and I have to give big ups to Sausage because his production seems to be improving and I think this may be the best song I've heard from him yet. I also thought the Adam Dachis song was really creepy. ... but I also get the feeling that maybe it's creepy on purpose? ... if not... hmm.. maybe I'm just misinterpreting it. It's really well done either way (which kind of adds to the creepyness somehow.)

This Tuners Union guy is really good... if Cody doesn't win once again, I figure it'll be him.

This is one of the stronger fights I've listened to in a while. I voted for almost half of the songs.

Mostly useless reviews, written in the random order songfight.org threw them at me, alphabetized for your convenience:

Adam Dachis - The melody is haunting. The lyrics are too straightforward. I want there to be some mystery in there.

add - Fun song. I love the little flourishes in the instrumental outro.

Berkeley Social Scene - Nice lead guitar work, as usual. The rhythm of the guitars in the choruses seems to clash with the rest of the instrumentation.

Cody Walker, Jr. - The lyrics feel a bit simplistic. I love the choruses and the buildup in the end. Overall, this is a really nice piece - not my cup of tea stylistically, but done quite well.

G.U.N.S. - I'm glad the lyrics are posted, because I can't understand a word of this. I think you're trying too hard to sing this in a key that just doesn't suit your voice. It's too bad, because I really love the music here, and the vocals are taking so much away from it for me.

Johnny Cashpoint - I want to call this a gimmick song, but that's not quite right. I'm not sure what else to say about it.

The Kenzie Chickens - Well done, but formulaic. And too long.

Paco del Stinko - Like all of your entries, I'm impressed with the musicianship and production values, I just wish you would write a serious song!

Naked Philosophy - After 21 years of songwriting, I have finally learned that elusive fifth chord. You're all in trouble, now.

Nobody, et al. - A good G&G song - that's a rarity around here, but you've managed to pull it off. This would have been a huge hit at the open mic I used to frequent.

Pigfarmer, Jr. - You're stretching to hit those notes, and not always getting there. I think you could've nailed this in a few more takes. It goes on a bit too long without any good change-ups...throw a bridge in there or something.

RadioShow - Very strong vocals. I listened to this right after the Kenzie Chickens, and I got the same formulaic vibe off of it.

sonofsupercar
- I kind of like this in an odd way. Call it positive genre bias.

Sausage - This is pretty good, but that bridge should've been in a different key or something in order to break the song up a little more.

Tuners Union - Nice 70's AM radio vibe. Well performed and produced. It's now stuck in my head, so I guess that's a good thing, but it didn't quite feel adventurous enough for my tastes.

j$ - That's what I meant, but that's also why I said that's not quite right. The song has some elements of novelty to it, but the overall impact is different. There's something that bothers me about the song, and I wish I could put my finger on it so that I could offer some constructive criticism instead of this pointless rambling, but I'm just not getting there.

SOS: energy-check. Raunch-check. Sex-check. Money-check. Rock and Roll-check. Vote-check.

GdotEtc: speakers distorting due to massive bass input. Clever, tenor delivered lyrics. Cool synth work, good structure w/ bridge. No reason not to give it a vote.

AD: Lyrics delivered nicely. Lounge piano work matches the vocals. Nice. R-rated lyrics are meant as a dichotomy to music/vocals. I get that. Weird Al would do it this way but without the penis inferences.

TU: Taken by itself, the song is too sparse. It needs a bottom at the start. After the lack thereof is taken care of, it gets good. This should make those who like non-commercial material happy.

Pjr: sing songy fun right from the start. But it wont make it to the campfire because you want to apologize to the fatty, when most kids would want to make fun of fatty.

+: Apolgies aside to Neil Hefty, the farfisa sounding instrumental is goofy enough to make up for the shortness.

BSS: Vocals are too buried in the beginning to understand clearly. It is well-produced and I can follow the structure well enough, which is ok. But I failed to get into it. I don’t know, maybe each section is too short to fully develop before cycling on.

PdS: I cant help but hear Furnier. After getting thru that though this is easy to like. I really do. Except for the telephone voice bits, it really is one of your standouts so I push a vote out.

NeA: After the intro it needs drums and bass behind the vocals. For what it is its good, but it sounds like you forcefit the fat man reference into an otherwise poignant story. I would think this would have been better if referencing a sad soul who lost the love of his life instead of fatty. However, in my mind I substitute “sad” for “fat” and it goes over well, as well as the vote that goes out too.

KRS: There’s no doubt the voice is pro. I realize the story is lame, clever as it is, but I’m not listening to the words only the delivery. Simple is good in the backing instrumental so as to keep the vocals up front. How bout some backing vocals in the 8-12th bars of some of the later progressions? 2 votes for the vocals, negative one for the lyrics, neutral for the instrumental as it just isn’t there. Adds up to a vote.

NP: Sync up the drums and instruments. If it wasn’t for that distraction, this is a cool tune. IMO the duration of the stops is too long.

KC: I’ve come to expect a bar band feel from this bunch. Good production too. Vote.

CW: I realize the story was fit to the tune, hard as that may have been, but that’s not their fault. The tune itself and vocal delivery is good though. Vote for the agony of having to write these lyrics to an otherwise great song.

J$: The intro is begging the tempo to crank up after the first verse. The background instruments fit the tedious nature of the storyline and tie the song together. Even though I wish it had become more jaunty rather than staying pedantic, the fact that so few songs are successfully bundled lyrically and musically in the same bag, vote.

SSg: I pictured myself on a Friday afternoon leaving LA on the 101 driving into the sunset. I just didn’t want to do another “fat man” eats too much song. So I made up a place off the highway near Ventura on the rocks near the beach.

The consensus seems to be that I got a little too abstract on the fat man in a box car thing.
And that's fair. I appreciate the feedback. :)

I went down the Fat Man / Little Boy / Manhattan Project route for the lyrical content.
It started with Fat Man (the second bomb) in a box car ("Bock's Car" was the name of the plane that dropped it).
Then I got so far into the suicide bomber metaphor that the original image didn't really make sense anymore, except to convey loneliness. Oh well.

The tune is in such good company on this fight. I voted for most of them.

I know *exactly* what you mean. Chalk that up to a) NO TIME. The whole thing was written, recorded and mixed in under three and a half hours, in four seperate sessions (not that that's a badge of honour. Quite the opposite) so I had to keep it rigidly structured and simple and b) I felt uncomfortable writing about someone I know (who doesn't know I have written about them still and may not take it in the spirit it's intended) - going where I normally would into some major key fun (though the tempo shift I hadn't thought of, and is a crackin' idea) just didn't occur to me.

And if it's pedantic, well, so's the lighter life diet that it's all about. and my pedantry hasn't killed anyone yet, to my knowledge? [/reach]
