I just broke my guitar

Links and other hanky panky that doesn't have to do with anything in particular.

I just broke my guitar

Post by Caravan Ray »

That really sucks

The strap slipped came off the knob on the bottom of the guitar and it dropped and hit the table leg. The side of it cracked and part of the back broke away.

Very uncool.

My luthier thinks he can glue it back together and it should be OK. I hope so. I prefer my guitar to all of the others I tried in the shop this morning.

Luckily it is one of these:

Image

with the fake wood back and sides - and it is only the fake wood bits that are damaged. The top is still fine.

I have had it for almost 10 years - and my initial thought was...Yeah! - Excuse to splash out on a new axe!!!

But I tried out a few guitars this morning - mainly Taylors, Martins and Matons all around the $2000-$3000 - and I really didn't like any of them as much as my old guitar. I do tend to get set in my ways.

That sucks, but taken to the right shop, it might come back better than new. If you were in the States, I'd recommend good 'ol Pat Diburro. I've known him for 30 years, had him do set-ups/frets and the like, but he specializes in major wrecks. Check out his work in the Ouch!!! link under the picture of the smashed acoustic. http://www.diburro.com/ Those pictures should give you hope! Anyway, good luck and let us know how it turns out, please.

EDIT: Oh yeah! And get some kind of straplocks, Maestro!

Oh man, I feel for you. It is a punch in the gut feeling when your guitar gets messed up. I'm sure your luthier will fix it right, if not better, if he's worth a grain.
I have a guy that seems to have been put on earth by aliens just to keep classic guitars pristine.
I had a top strap pop off the knob on my SG and the head hit the floor. It cracked off the tip and fucked up my neck. He fixed it like new. You could not see the repair even with a magnifying glass and the neck was BETTER than I ever had it.

Aye. I had a guitar do a headstock first Karate chop into the floor once, busting off tuning pegs and, luckily, not the headstock. Lesson learned and on went the locks. Definitely worth it. Not all of my guitars have them, but from that lesson, I never take both hands off the guitar when standing.

Are you gonna play Bach pieces with your Baroque guitar?

No - but I get the chance I will try to bend you over and ram the broken pieces up your Rimsky-Korsakov

Same to you. With knobs on.

For some reason that just reminded me of the time back when I was about 18-19 and the bass player/lead singer of my first band - The Mess. One memorable drunken night at the South Newcastle Bowling Club (that is lawn bowls - not 10-pin) I played all of "Wipeout" while being suspended upside down by the ankles by two audience members. Ahhh....performance art, youthful exhibitionism and adolescent alcohol abuse all formed a magic combination that night!

Ha! Very nice. Good luck finding audience members willing to do that again. No offense!

SUCK IT UP AND TAPE IT UP, PUSSY. I brought my custom shop Martin out here to goddamn Afghanistan with the express intent on having it full of sand and holes by the time I'm out of here. We're armed at all times, and I'm lucky enough to have been issued a pistol. This means, however, that I'm developing some nasty pistol-butt gouges on the bottom-back of the guitar. If that's not goddamn country-punk rockstar, I don't know what is.

PS. Hi, everyone.

It's more humane than making them watch Barney, at least.
