The BSS mp3 has tags on my side. Maybe sending it through Gmail caused them to get stripped out somehow?

1) Generic: send it along anyway, not that the Fightmasters have created the "late entries" section. Or you know, at least post here on somesongs

2) Crap. Why do I always submit to the big fights? This one isn't huge, but it definitely has 10 ft. by 10 ft. space with reach.

3) Om nom nom nom, new Billy and the Psychotics </drool>

Coming soon to this space: Reviews!

No, it was my player that didn't recognize it for some reason. It has ID3v1 (but not ID3v2). Oddly, when I load the file individually, I see the tags. It's only when I load it from the playlist (.m3u) that I don't see the tags.

All of the other files I mentioned are tagless no matter how I load them.

Interesting. I mixed the song this time, and I just used Cubase's tagging on export. Maybe if I tagged in iTunes instead it would use ID3v2? I'll try that next time.

Wow, posted the tunes so early! I am delighted.

Some really sweet stuff. Some really weird stuff. Some awful stuff too. I’m going to chime in with Spud – tag the mp3’s. It’s hard to review or vote when we aren’t sure who the heck you are.

Alrighty then, here are reviews, with input from King Colon:

Acapella Annie – I see where it’s going, there’s just nothing holding it together.

Berkeley Social Scene –Sounds like Morrissey, but guitar riff is cooler. Cool prog-y breakdown

Billy and the Psychotics – Really cool music. However I really dislike the schmaltzy vocals.

Blake and I – Sounds pretty good. Could be tighter. Like Jack White and Cake had sex and this was the resulting offspring. Very cool.

Brown Word and the Big Whine – This was a water decision. P.S. I’m reading Dune right now. It freakin’ rules.

Greggers Inc. – heavy guitar, driving intro good. Could be sweet 80’s power ballad but the vox aren’t right for that style. Alas, because the music is amazing. Kudos for the geets solo. I appreciate your extensive use of guitars.

Grid – BITE DOWN HARD! I like the yell. Men Without Hats-sounding vox. + a bit of wah funky guitar solo. Cute and fun!

Guiterrorists – Terrorize me!!!!!! That’s what I’m fuckin’ talkin’ about! Absolutely sick, best song King Colon has heard in the fight so far. He hopes there’s no vocals. He is pleased. Epic guitar goodness.

G.U.N.S. – Singer sounds like Joel from Mystery Science Theatre 3000 (not sure what Colon means by that, but I’ma roll with it). When the harmonies hit, I really hate the high voice.

Infinity Point Buck – Devo rap. Can’t understand the vocals – but I want to. Drums sound dry, you could stand to program some rap beats. The distort instrumental solo works really well.

Kenzie Chickens - Prince up in the house yall (??). Go chickens! Cheesy, canned 80’s sound – which rocks. The vocals are just bizarre. This is madness!

Lonbobby – Thank you for autotuning the vox, too often a beautiful song is ruined by awful vox and that was not the case here. Autotune has its own appeal, though could’ve been tuned still more. The intro music is neat, I really like the instrumentation throughout. Lyrics iffy. Well mixed.

Lookouts – Guessing there is a Led Zeppelin fan among you and this was mixed by the person who sings. Nice vocal take, but the effect is overload and sounds strained. The guitars are almost covered up.

Meister Matt – Yeah, this is tough! Hardcore is so rare in the ‘Fight. This is great! Great energy! Throw some beer bottles and bite off a guys ear. And stomp on it with your boots. No idea what you’re saying but I like it. Does your guitar player like Greg Ginn? Stunningly terribly in the best possible way, thumbs up!

Mickey Skylark – V A G I N A! Love your style Mickey. Great sounding instrumentation, clever lyrics, and I like your voice. (Can I still say voice??? Oh no). Damn fine harp-playing, very professional sounding.

Milton – I like your piano sound, though it is a bit loud (too much attack). Vox much better this time around, sounds like a more comfortable range for you to sing in. Your voice is a bit warbly but that is endearing. Whimsical. Like something from a musical.

Nickey Nylark – Nice play on words. Now Mickey, did you just happen to have an extra song hanging around and wanted to submit it? Fine by me. I like this one too. A little more folksy and less-old-timey than the Mickey tracks I’ve heard thus far. Catchy.

Noah McLaughlin – Gothy. Vox get buried by noise in the verse. Cymbals are too loud. You have a very strong, clear voice, very emotive. Late 80’s vampire feel.

Paco Del Stinko – Punchy, well mixed. Great, clean guitar sound. Wacky music, very tight, very awesome. Nice key/rhythm changes. Climby bass riff in the middle is totally sick. I like your voice too. World According to Garp?? Kudos for saying “cock”.

Pigfarmer Jr. – Very real. Short and no nonsense. Nice sounding guitar solo. Well put-together song, the right amount of energy in the vocals.

Rev. P. Wayne – Detuned, asynchronous vocal harmonies range from dreamy/nicely-disturbing to painfully off. Effects overload. Reminds me of Bongwater a bit. I don’t like the maraca/shaker percussion.

Sonfosupercar – Could be on a TV montage (whaaa?). Opening or verse part really indie sounding, off on purpose. Then the trademark noisy wall of sound with husky dirty vox. Man I like this dude’s voice, it’s up front. Grunge quality to the production, but more musical and better singing.

tntYOW – Strange. I kind of wish I could understand the vox better. I appreciate the bizarre-ness and the crazy-toy electronic sounds. Makes me think of Danny Elfman in Forbidden Zone. Xylophone disproportionately loud but I like this.

WreckdoM – Get out the special sauce for this week’s WreckdoM entry! Taste the waves of flavors let loose.

It totally is Garp, the book! Inspired by, anyway. Good catch there, miss! I must've used the word cock in a song somewhere, but I can't remember when. Thanks for the comments. :)

I will listen and post reviews...tomorrow. Out the door right now.

Well, it's kind of a song about a silly girl lusting after a vampire a lot cooler than her. I wasn't running for Congress. :)
Thanks for the review though. I quite like the music as well :)

Acapella Annie It sounds like you're trying not to get caught while singing this. I think I would like it better if I could understand all that you are saying. Better than your last entry, pitch and melody-wise.

Berkeley Social Scene I like the heavy-ish intro. The chord and mobile guitar lines are very good as is their crunchy texture. Some lush backing vocals on the bridge would be sweet, and overlapping vocal lines on the extended outro chorus as well. Pleasant tune.

Billy And The Psychotics Just enough cowbell. I like the vocals here and surprisingly, never thought of a vampire angle as subject. (File under:Duh!) Thick production manages to balance itself out. Old school attitude with fresh flavor.

Blake And I Great start, great simple layering that packs a punch. Not a fan of the boxy guitar tone, but it works for what it does. Uriah Heep meets White Stripes. I keep waiting for it to drop down a few keys and open up, bashing, but that uncertainty helps maintain the wonderful tension and drive.

Brown Word and the Big Whine Nice. Dynamics, atmosphere, melody. The verse sections are kind of cold, but the crunch of the 'attitude' sections blow that apart. Your voice sits just right in the mix, part of the music. I am not as smart as you to be able to guess the source material, if it is something other than personal. Menacing. I like this a lot.

Greggers Inc. Very good production. Your voice is smooth and you sing well, nice trills. I like the melody and how you utilize the main groove as base for verse and chorus without getting numb. Dense atmosphere but not crowded, good layering. Nice work and hope you continue to submit songs.

Grid I'm glad this didn't persue the Jackson 5 threat at the start. Militant Soul Coughing. Love the bridge breakdown, that's the nuts. Great groove and playing. Trim and lean production. The lyrics don't offer a lot, I suppose, but the song does a lot in a short time, without feeling crowded.

Guiterrorists Skanktown US of A. Or is that Canadia? Asia? Anyway, this monster theme music is beautifully ugly. It kind of wanders around, stomping on things just to stomp on them. Obligatory mention of lack of lyrics equals...whatever. Use as a background for ESPN:The Broken Bones Special.

G.U.N.S. I like the poppy approach here. Glad I can't think of who it reminds me of, but has an 80's scent. Very compressed sounding. It loses some focus during the pre-lead bridge section, feels good when the verse comes back. Simple, honest and direct lyrics. The guitarmonies at the end could've gone another round, tasty. Good tune.

Infinity Point Buck Swirly, manicy, I can't understand most of the vocals. They either blend in the mix or aren't both tight together. Interesting synth tones and blurples, but this comes and goes berfore it makes much sense.

The Kenzie Chickens Ha! I knew this was you before I looked to see. Meanwhile, back at the nightclub... :) I'm waiting for one of Prince's female proteges to start cooing. It works without a, constant, I suppose, lead vocal, surprisingly. Bite down and get on the floor, though? Ha! Whatever. Good work, fun.

Lonbobby I'm not an auto-tune fan, but do appreciate it when pushed this far, occasionally. The hooks allow me to accept it, I suppose. Great mood and structure, I like the late night hipster vibe and atmosphere. Fun headphone experience. What a great mix.

the lookouts Something too bright going on here for me, it borders on harsh. I keep waiting for a 5-string bass/synth line to rumble up from down below, but am left hanging. I like some of the 70's vibe here, summer tune. But it hangs around on that high vocal note for too long. And that vocal effect is too much here, I think. This could whittle out a verse to keep it from dragging.

Meister Matt Skanky guitar tone works, bottom end could be more bottomy. Pass the throat lozenges, please. Sloppy the further it goes until the bizzarro lead section which somehow saves it. This needs a lot of work, but has a fun feel to it, mostly. But yeah, sloppy.

Mickey Skylark Ha! Very well done, sir. I saw this story when it went by, although I'm sure it's not done yet. And great V word verse. The key changes and supporting instruments are wonderful. The melody is weak or sometimes lacking, but the commentary more than makes up for it. Excellent.

Milton Creepy carousel. The progreesion is very good and the chorus spooky and strong. Your pitch could be tightened up some, but your voice is fine. Yeah, I'm one to talk. The song feels long, even as it starts. I don't know how you could get around this except maybe adding some different little touches here and there.

Nickey Nylark Dylan Bowie. I love the progression. Guitars sound great as well. The subject matter is so lite after your, uh, cousins' entry. Fun, the uh-oh's are the hook.

noah mclaughlin Extra big production this time, yikes! I saw your Reznor reference somewhere, I get it. I'd like to hear your voice jump an octave during the chorus, almost screaming. I think that'd make a nice threat. I hear a backing voice there, but the main one getting scary would be cool. What is your lyrical source? One of the mystical fantasy games you play? Great atmosphere all around, sound great.

Paco del Stinko As pointed out by WreckdoMelle, I used the World According to Garp as inspiration for this. Read the book, it's great. Three different guitars, two different amps. Extended lead so Glennny won't yell at me.

Pigfarmer Jr I like this a lot. Nice ryhthm, strong condemning lyrics. Your pitch is a little questionaable at times, but doesn't matter here, really. The length of the song is perfeect, it makes it all the stronger. Tasty lead section, a warning of bad things to come. Excellent work, my fave of yours right off.

Rev. P. Wayne Stuttery start, but nice vocal work, if loaded with effects. I like the vocals transforming into the keys and back, nice touch. I am not sure that I can understand the lyrics that well, and I see Rev. in your band tag. Is this a Jesusy thing? With words like eternity going by, that seems like a good guess. It's pleasant and well done, I like the trippy ending.

sonofsupercar Bigger production this week, I love the near poppy, cozy start to the stomp on the gas pedal opening up as it gets going. Drums sound the nuts, I love drums that sound like drums and not cannons. Well, unless it's some dumb monster cock rock song, or whatever, rare as they are that I like. ANYWAY, put this at the top of your catalog of great songs. The pause works best when the song ends, clever.

tntYOW A scientist huffing laboratory fumes here, I think. Farty synth and manic drums under hard to understand vocal geekage. I appreciate the manic everywhere of this song, but that everywhere-ness of it is also its undoing. Too kooky. Good work putting it all together, I suppose, this could've said all it needed to say in 2:20.

WreckdoMHa! Put this on the Destroy All Humans theme album you guys are apparently working on this summer. Happy music to eat your friends, and self, to. Jimi Hendrix comes in for a nibble at the bridge. Bite me Jimi! This almost goes on too long, but the dense groove won't let go. You guys need never leave.

Thanks, elle. It was a fun jam for us. Paco really seasons this steak well with his spicy licks and Dee poured her sweet sauciness all over it. Then I grilled it hot and smokey nice and rare so we can give the world a bite.

Reznor's always been one of my big inspirations, so it's a personal accomplishment to finally be able to produce a song that sounds as if it may have come off a NIN album.

I thought about doing something more for the chorus, but it wasn't quite working. Maybe I'll go back to it, though and really hammer it out. This tune could use a little more change-up.

Lyrical sources: Dante, Ancient Greek myths, Breillat's La belle endormie, Carné and Prévert's The Devil's Envoys, and the Medieval troubadour tradition.

Hello. I am a GUITERRORIST and will try to follow in the footsteps of the Great Master Malmsteen to UNLEASH THE FUCKING FURY

Acapella Annie
Like the great Yngwie Johann Malmsteen once said about, well, everyone who isn't him, this is just really out of tune. The lyrics might be good, but I can't tell, because I don't want to listen to it. And there is a distinct lack of METAL RIFFAGE.

Berkeley Social Scene
You know if you did this as a Helmet song it would RAWK. Some lack of commitment on the vocal phrasing now and again (e.g. "all your friends turned against you"). The solo is ok but sort of stays in the same place through the whole thing and too much echo hides the guitar, let it BITE DOWN!

Billy And The Psychotics
Ah, white people funk. Nice breakdown before the solo. Turning down the tone control a little more for "woman tone" would've made that solo more awesome. RAWK! (And maybe if the song itself was a few beats slower to swing harder?)

Blake And I
I suppose this is competent enough, but it didn't move me. No strong hook. Sort of predictable. RAWKS alright, but where's the FURY???!!!

Brown Word and the Big Whine
Are you familiar with STARDOOM? They have been planning to do an album called MUAD'DIB RIDES THE WORM for years now. Needs more layers OF GIANT GUITARS to change up on each cycle through the song. I will play CRYSKNIFE GUITAR SOLOS for your next venture if you want.

Greggers Inc.
Harmonized guitars! Boston!

Grid
Groovy! Funky! Danceable! Nice attack on the guitar. Could use a big chorus or bridge or something to go someplace else for a bit.

Guiterrorists
Needs more MULLET!!!! And just because Paco mentioned how many guitars he used on his, I used FOUR...TEEN....MILLION GUITARS ON THIS AND FIVE!...TY...AMPS! And ripped off Tool riffs and licks from the Beat It solo. Because those two things should always go together. Along with the EBow and like a thousand artificial harmonics.

G.U.N.S.
I am overwhelmed with bland. And if you're going to do the big harmonized guitars thing, going for "out" note choices don't work too well.

Infinity Point Buck
Bubbly. Distinct lack of RAW DISTORTED GUITARS LEAPING down your THROAT. Other than that, I like the sounds but there's a lack of a journey, the song has good ideas but doesn't really go anywhere. ALSO NO METAL.

The Kenzie Chickens
Envelope filters are like wah for double leg amputees. Danceable, funky, Prince-y. Could use about SEVEN MORE GUITAR SOLOS all playing at the same time, reaching 12th DIMENSIONAL HARMONIC BLISS. Or just one ring-modulated guitar solo, which is sort of the same thing.

Lonbobby
Belongs in an indie movie montage sequence. I am not listening to this song loud enough to really comment on it usefully because I think, like the GUITERRORISTS track, you lose all the sonic detail at lower volumes. Next time instead of Auto-tune, modulate with a SCREAMING GUITAR SOLO as the oscillation input! But has a cool mellow vibe. I could've used some more fucking around with the rhythm to break things up a little (says the guy who hates programming drums so much that he just reuses whatever loops are sitting around).

the lookouts
I don't hear LZ with this at all. It's more American styled. YOU HAVE A GUITAR PLAYER YET YOU DO NOT LET HIM RAWK. MENOS YOWLING MAS WAILING, POR FAVOR

Meister Matt
I like the Dropkick Murphys as much as the next guy, but WHY NO LET GUITAR PLAYER GO ALL SICK ALL OVER AN 8-MINUTE SOLO SECTION? Seriously though, was waiting for something to take the song to the next level. This is happening a lot in this fight, where a song starts out good but then just stays there and doesn't make the leap.

Mickey Skylark
Is funny. You know what would make it funnier A CHROMATIC SCALE GUITAR SOLO PLAYED WITH THE VAGINA.

Milton
Fell asleep. Sorry. Needs more sections or at least variation on the theme and of course...wait for it...MASSIVE CRUNCHY GUITAR SOLOS. Or at least a washy tremolo one. I'm not asking for much.

Nickey Nylark
I could see a time and place for this song. BUT IT'S NOT NOW OR ANYTIME SOON. NOW I PUT ON MASTER OF PUPPETS. I HAVE MADE A COMPILATION OF ONLY THE GUITAR SOLOS and NONE OF THE REST OF IT.

noah mclaughlin
This is one of those songs where I want to say something nice about it. It seems like a bunch of influences I should like. But actually it just sounds like a hodge-podge of stuff and the rhythms are all off each other. It's like it's all rushing, but at different speeds--the groove never settles, and if there's one thing to take away from NIN and Reznor production, the groove is always paramount, even in the odd time signature songs or the ones where they're screwing around with time. ALSO IT LACKS SEARING GUITAR SOLOS IN EVERY ORIFICE, BURNING AWAY THE SKIN.

Paco del Stinko
The GUITAR TONE IS RIGHTEOUS so it's too bad I hate the drums and the song just gets messy in the middle with those, chords that are just sorting clashing around. But at least it has RIGHTEOUS GUITAR TONE!!!

Pigfarmer Jr
This song again should be slower to groove harder. Practice a few more times to get the vox intonation. I'm not condemning, there's a reason I don't sing! Mostly it has to do with having no balls. BUT I MAKE UP FOR IT WITH MY GIANT METAL COCK RAWK GUITARZ

Rev. P. Wayne
Outside of more vocal pitch issues which really detract (sadly, off-intonation bothers me enough on vocals that D wrote a lyric about it in a DT song--ER NOT ME MUST'VE BEEN SOME OTHER LAME-O), it would really help in my opinion for your vocal to sound more committed, full-voiced. OR JUST COVER IT ALL UP WITH A JACKSON SOLOIST PLUGGED INTO THREE MESA MARK V FULL STACKS. It could just play feedback

sonofsupercar
GROOVE! COMMITMENT! But this song really lacks like some WHAMMY AND WAH-LACED FEEDBACK OOZING with TAPE ECHO. AND MORE MO I HEAR HE'S NOT DREAMY ANYMORE THOUGH

tntYOW
I have literally listened to this song 5 times in a row trying to find something to say about it. But nothing's coming. OF COURSE A FEW THOUSAND SWEEP ARPEGGIOS WOULD MAKE IT BILLIONS OF TIMES BETTER. JUST DO THE MATH, IT'S TOTALLY WORTH IT. THOUSANDS=>BILLIONS!

WreckdoM
Behind the beat but well in the groove! This is a great groove. AND YOU HAVE A WHAMMY BAR, THOUGH I PREFER TO CALL IT A WIGGLESTICK. Wish there were some pauses/breaks in the flow OR JUST MORE WAILING DUDE.

Okay you don't like it that's fine. What do you mean by "out" note choices? I think you mean playing "outside" which is the jazz term for playing notes outside of the key. However I stayed within G major on both the guitars in the guitarmonies. So you clearly didn't like it, which is a bummer, but fair. I don't think it's for the reason you stated. You probably didn't like the note choices, but I didn't play outside on this one. (I love to play outside, but it's usually a jazz or fusion setting, not so much in a rock setting)

thanks for the review!

I am overwhelmed with bland. And if you're going to do the big harmonized guitars thing, going for "out" note choices don't work too well.

No, sorry for being unclear. I meant mostly out of tune, especially on bends. Examples: listen again to 2:54 or so (to my ears there are some outside harmonies even starting from 2:45). It's the backing track with the "guitarmonies", they are moving in and out of dissonance, and while I'm not sitting down with a guitar to figure it out exactly at the moment, I'm pretty sure G major doesn't do that particular dissonant harmony (you're playing a C and it bends sharp, not quite to C# (b5!), then a few seconds later you want to bend to E but it's still too flat) . I have a pretty good ear and I like chromatic, whole tone, symmetrical diminished, etc. etc. as well as combining them on the fly, so it's not a question of familiarity with scales or unusual harmonies.

In terms of blandness, I almost always find that's more of a production/performance/arrangement issue than a writing one. In this case, I personally found the arrangement just really stereotypical of the "indie rock song" and not very rhythmically interesting yet. Have you considered making the song a bit faster, push the tempo a bit, singing a bit more staccato?

Okay I hear what you're talking about. yeah those could have been a lot tighter, especially in arrival time at the notes. By definition a bend will be out of tune between the start and end of the bend. I was trying for that Duane Allman lazy sour long bend kind of thing. It'd drive Yngwie nuts. Those leads were the last thing tracked and probably warranted a few more takes.

Thanks for the clarification! As for this song, I like it the way it is (written that is, there are performance issues). Maybe next time I'll write something you like, maybe not, but I appreciate the feedback!

Harmonized guitars! Boston!
Thanks for the review!
I appreciate someone who knows what he likes. I look forward to hearing what you think of my entry for next week's fight, which will probably contain significantly lower quantities of METAL, but probably be good anyway. :ugeek:
