Ha, Ken. I had that exact pic, except I changed the hat band red and put SONG FIGHT! on it. I started the art yesterday, then a friend stopped over with a case of an IPA he got up north and that's all she wrote, lol.

Please note that the AntBut entry has been updated to include the entire entry, not just the first few second. My fault, not theirs.

Seriously, almost none of these songs sound like crap, like they were recorded with a laptop built-in microphone or through a paper cup attached to a string. Thank you GarageBand? ;)

i hope i can offer some constructive criticism. please know if i joke, i’m not poking fun at your music, just having a wank...

antbut
relaxed and mellow, yet accusing. unique voice! abrupt ending, but better than a fade-out. 4 out 5 wanks

the berkeley social scene
starts out mellow, bloody marys imply you’ve been drinking and you’re going to do some more, that’s worth a wank right there. then it turns out this is really a punk song. i’m pretty sure punk music and wanking go hand in hand. think the solo should have drawn on that punk like energy more... 4 out of 5 wanks

billy and the psychotics
it starts... oh no what is this!? wait... it works... verse builds in energy as do i. chorus! cool. this song is great. great dynamics building up and and dropping it down to build it up again, just like a good wank. good production too. 5 out of 5 wanks

the chadderandom abyss
1 wank for being brave and experimenting, and 1 for making this only 2:23 long, even though it seemed like 5:00. 2 out of 5 wanks, but don’t give up, i never do.

glennny
this is a tough one. i can tell there was a good effort made. in some ways it makes me want to have a romantic wank, and so it’s a little confusing in that sense. i feel the vocals are hiding a bit, kinda like the guilt experienced in the early wanking years when you’re not sure if it’s something you should be doing but knowing you can’t talk about it or you will become a social pariah. tmi? perhaps. but the truth is, i can’t find any problems with the song, but it’s leaving me with wanting more. 3 out of 5 wanks

the hate noise
hmm... what’s this... oh pure awesome?! cool! filled with attitude and determination. love the energy in this one! i usually feel it’s tough, but not impossible, to build up this kind of energy with acoustics or clean electrics, but you pull it off... just like i’m doing now. gonna need to see a doc for these friction burns... 6 out of 5 wanks! (ouch)

hoglen & wages
it sounds like real trumpet, so that’s cool, but i was hoping to hear more horn blowing so i could do likewise. especially in the solo anyway. the song is well put together, but maybe a little long. something still seems to fully grab my, uh..., attention though... gonna have to give 3 and a half out of 5 wanks.

james owen f. tony dunn
not sure who’s doing what. that sax playing is great. whoever is singing, i think i understand the vibe you’re going for, but it lacks a little passion, i think. don’t want to come off (well yes i do), but i don’t want to come off as insulting, i am hoping to provide constructive criticism. 3 and a half out of 5 wanks for this one.

the lip
you’re just playing sexy music to get me in the mood. that organ, unlike mine, seems very digital. but works, sounds kind of chip-tune like. this is like full on sexy pop song. wait, what’s this part at the end where you’re crying in a dungeon? hmm that’s kinda weird. like when you’re going strong with a sexy image and then you scroll down and find out she’s not quite what she was advertising, but it’s too late... but then you decide it’s okay after all... actually kind of nice. 5 out of 5 wanks.

paco del stinko
mentioning dragons is worth a wank right there. whoever you’re blaming, sounds like they’re kicking your ass. it’s all good, your lyrics help pull me (yes) into the song more. some good guitar tones and a clean production. kinda has a cool quirkiness to it. 4 out of 5 wanks.

schizophonics
very angry! but that’s okay, who hasn’t had an angry wank or two these days? okay so you guys do a good job with this, but here are my comments. I think the vocals are too loud in the first verse... kinda feel like the angry comes out better if it sounds like it’s fighting to just beat out rest of the music. i kinda feel like you guys drop the ball when you drop the f bomb... not that it doesn’t have its place in lyrics... it’s just that you were pulling of this great lyrical bombardment of why this person sucks, and so saying “fuck you” kind of feels like you’re giving up on it a little. but this is just one wanker’s opinion. also, the fade out... fade outs are my new pet peeve, so not a fan. would have loved to hear a high energy ending. 4 out of 5 wanks.

sell crazy
i like the melody, would have love to had a strong vocal sound, push more air through those pipes! the song is good, can’t really give any other criticisms. 4 and a half out of 5 wanks.

sober
i read on the forum you said you were confident you wouldn’t win this fight. sir, lying does not make one want for a wank. that being said, i need to invest in some bandages. this is a great song, great performance, great production. 6 out of 5 wanks (the burning...)
state shirt
i find this interesting. a little lacking in lyrics though... i’d like to hear more to tie them together... sounds like it’s a message to someone who’s retreated from life, but i can’t get more of out of it. the audio chopping at the end does through of one’s wanking rhythm though. 4 out of 5 wanks

the wankers
what a bunch of idiots. just a bunch of drunks at a party... but, i’m contractually obligated to give this 5 out of 5 wanks. (and you should too!)

wreckdom
love the lyrics and the vocal performance. but the music is a bit weird. kinda like if the phone rings while you’re wanking away and you answer it, no one is gonna see what you’re doing, but if you don’t stop if makes you feel bad. this is why i never answer my phone. 3 out of 5 wanks.

This my first post, just reviewing the songs and sometime soon I'll put in one of my own songs to get laughed at.

I thought The Hate Noise was the best of these, followed by The Lip. But I voted for 6 songs in total.

ANTBUT - I quite like this - it's delicate and odd. The voice won't be to everyone's taste, but I think its idiosyncrasies help to stop the song sounding blandly competent and cheesy. The lyrics are weak - nothing dramatic or interesting happens, just different ways of saying the same thing. (VOTE)

BERKELEY SOCIAL SCENE - Lovely atmospheric intro. Vocals a bit rough but never boring. Like the inquiry/diary line. I like this song. It could do with more polish, but pretty good. (VOTE)

BILLIE AND THE PSYCHOTICS - Nice guitar playing. The mix is too muddy - it sounds like there's reverb on the bass or something. Too much sludge down there, can't really make out what's being played. I prefer the way I imagine this band could sound rather than the way it's actually been recorded. The singer and song have this sort of lazy, local band averageness that I don't care for.

THE CHADDERANDOM ABYSS - This kind of stuff is fun to make I guess but not to listen to. You need to be a genius to pull it off really.

GLENNY - Really pretty stuff. I can hardly hear a word you're singing though. Some of the percussion is distracting - how much is being played live and how much is on a loop? It's sort of overwhelming. Would listen to more from this person/people. (VOTE)

THE HATE NOISE - Really like this, a great groove. So much going on, and the vocals are exciting as hell. The best song of the bunch, just ahead of The Lip. (VOTE)

HOGLEN + WAGES - I like a lot of elements of this, but the song isn't very strong. It was hard to pay attention for the full length of it - about twice the length it needs to be. I would've liked some melodic excitement.

JAMES OWENS - Straight-ahead Bowie/Eno homage. This is right up my street, but maybe a bit too close to the source. The vocals fit the style, but a little wobbly, too far front in the mix. Use a touch of compression to let them sit further back or something. I like the hooky way the BVs come in at 1:08. (VOTE)

THE LIP - Thought this was gonna go through the whole song sounding like the intro, but thank God no. Can't make out a word of the vocals they're so distorted, but at least some serious energy. Love the clashing rhythms and general atmosphere. I would listen to this at home for fun. (VOTE)

PACO DEL STINKO - Competent and someone would like this, just not me. Sounds very 90s. The "I blame you entirely" is much less catchy than the section running from about 1:34-1:52, which is the liveliest part of the song. I want more of that.

SCHIZOPHONICS - Can't understand the words, the vocals aren't clear. The music doesn't grab me - the synth sounds seem a bit too default.

SELL CRAZY - Too cute and mild-mannered for me really, but genuinely catchy and well put together.

SOBER - Bit of a genre pastiche. Well put together, I can hear there's solid musicianship behind this, but it's kind of boring. The melody always goes where you expect it to.

STATE SHIRT - I tried to think of things to say about this, but nothing really sticks out. It's not much of a song.

THE WANKERS - boring.

WRECKDOM - "Who broke Mommy's favorite face?" is a funny opening line. But I'd rather the song went somewhere different rather than just this straight goofy comedy. It's the same joke over and over, and it gets less and less funny as you go on. In the end I really hated it.

Yeah, I like percussion when it's adding delicate accents or whatever, but it felt in parts like sleighbells constantly rattling - just this distracting jangle in my ears (I listened on headphones). Still a cool song though. :)

Hello all. Gareth from Sell Crazy here. Thanks for the reviews, in hindsight I think I picked the wrong key for our song. It's at the top of my vocal range, if it was a bit lower I could have roughed it up a bit and made it more rock. Here are my reviews.

Top 3

Billy

This has a menacing feel that I like. The guitar work is cool and the mix is good too. I like this and that's all I have to say.

Hate noise

This song has plenty of style and emotion but the content is hidden. I like the aggression in the vocal and the overall style but I can't make out the lyrics and as there's very not much in the way of melody or musical variation the song rests on your lyrics. If the vocals were clearer this might have got my vote.

State Shirt

I like this. It's got a good feel to it and the bits where it drops back to just the vocal and the swirly noises are a great contrast to the industrial sounding chorus. This one gets my vote.

Honourable Mentions

Berkley

Bit of a weird mix, the singer and distorted guitar sound like they're in a different room to the rest of the band. It gives is a an ethereal quality though which I kind of like. The lack of variation in the song means it gets a bit boring by the end. Still a good effort though.

Lip

Cool sounding and that goes a long way to covering up that their isn't much to the song musically. Almost makes my top 3 but there's not quite enough here to keep me interested.

Paco Del Stinko

Nice chorus, I like the overlapping vocals and harmonies. The vocal's a little out of tune but I don't mind that as I'm enjoying the song. Good work.

The rest

Antbut

Sounds a bit like something the Beautiful South would do. A bit cheesy and laid back for my tastes but well put together.

Chadder

This has Trout Mask Replica written all over it. I suffered through that album because I like Captain Beefheart's other songs. I didn't enjoy the experience though and I feel the same about your song. It's cleverly done, the bit where the vocal goes to the right made me jump, but I wouldn't listen to it again.

Glenny

The vocals on this need some work as they're very pitchy. I'm not digging the bossa nova backing either. Not bad but not for me.

Hoglen

I like the trumpet playing in this and the parts where the harmonies come in but other than that I'm not keen. I'm not sure why though, it just doesn’t do it for me.

James Owen

Your vocal style reminds me a bit of Bowie. It needs some work on the volume and pitch control though. This song's OK but it's let down a little by the vocal.

Schizo

This is well put together and the verse rapping is cool. The chorus hook needs to be catchier though, to offset the lack of melody in the rest of the song. I'd probably re-structure the song too, having verse-verse-verse-chorus means there's a long unbroken period with little change, which gets a bit boring.

Sober

The 1st 4 bars of the melody remind me of "Food Glorious Food" from Oliver, but then you take it somewhere different. I like the brushed drums and the instrumentation. Overall this is nicely done song, apart from the length, I'm just not digging the crooner style.

Wankers

I'm finding the lyrics as amusing as your reviews. You get points for bringing the comedy.

Wreckdom

I'm not sure about this one. I don't think the joke's strong enough to pull this through. Get effort though.

Whittled down comments after I lost the original ones. Grr! Ask for clarification and I'll be glad to offer it up.

AntBut Pleasant and smooth. My attention drifts a little by the end.

Berkeley Social Scene DIg the verse bass line, the guitar is a little choppy but appropriate. Good band sound, could use a backing vocal on chorus maybe.

Billy and the Psychotics Great, great riff. I'dve added a harmony if I could figure the riff out. Slinky vocals don't get overdone. Hooky, head banging.

The Chadderandom Abyss I saw your name on the playlist and couldn't remember what you did. Now I do. Glad you persue your own thing, sorta, but don't be afraid to try a different path.

glennny The chorus would be heavenly if tightened up. Good progressions if crammed in at times. Digging the Django attack and sound if maybe too frenetic.

The HATE Noise Nice energy and urgency. I like the lo-fi sound and the militant beat. Vocals could be tighter vs. clearer but the backing ones are great. This would work huge as well.

Hoglen & Wages Horns are good but when and where they come in could be better. And the vocals that accompany them on the chorus could be much better. Easy going tune, sounds good if a bit sloppy.

James Owens f. Tony Dunn I dig the Bowie sound as well. Sax is excellent and the keys fit nicely. I wonder if a slightly higher key might've added just a little extra psuh in your voice, might be a plus.

The Lip A nowadays song that could work with that Maroon 5 guy or similar, but better than that shit. The distorto voice fits nicely, if too unclear. NIce builds as song progresses.

Paco del Stinko Cheap progression, I re-did the left guitar after an acoustic fail. I hear what someome said about vocal being off. Yeah. This is about my mom.

Schizophonics Aggressive and driving. I like the rhythm and flow of this but am not a fan of those keyboard jolts/stabs or whatever they are called. Never liked them. Atmospherics are nice. Good vocal deliveries and nice to hear several voices.

Sell Crazy This is a fave this week despite some of its weaknesses. Whiffs of Ted Leo, to me. This'd be great with a whip-crack tight band to add some extra pow. Great bass tone.

Sober I like this but feel it could be shortened. Not too short or it'd be gimicky. I think the melody is nice coming full circle, if somewhat predictable as someone said. I don't like the delay on the voice though, sounds more like an error than effect. Nice playing.

State Shirt Great atmospherics and use of distorted tones. Soaring time lapse sunset clouds and all that. Either nightclub music or in a soundtrack. Expertly crafted, as usual.

The Wankers This is better than last week's tune by a lot, but the wanking joke is already growing weak. This shows that you have an understanding of music and some theory. You don't need to be all serious, but kick ass without the same joke.

WreckdoM I dunno. I laughed at these lines. I appreciate their absurdity. The who did it lists are great and the minimal music is nice and disturbing on a subconscious level. Not me! (Porn actor Paul Thomas line in Jesus Christ Superstar movie)

Okay, my reviews. I like to review songs based on the song and intended genre, even though I'm into the lazy local band sound with my muddy knob turned to 11. :P
I try to hold back on engineering and production tips, because who the fuck am I? But it's hard for me not to, so sorry in advance. Plus I personally have gotten to the point I'm at because of it, so if I can help, I like to pay it forward.

AntBut - Right away I like the sonic feel of this. At first I thought this was a jb side gig, lol. I like this song. I listen to and play more raw, organic and non synth, but that doesn't change the fact that this song is done well. Nice kick back music with a cup of hot cocoa, watching the rain out the window.

Berkeley Social Scene - Cool, nice mellow groove right out of the gate. I like the use of reverb on vocals to give the mood here and a nice 60s vibe, but the rhythm guitar and highs on the drums (snare, cymbals) need to follow the same ambiance. Not as much, just a wetness to gel them together better. But that can be chalked up as artistic expression and there are no rules "in the studio". That would be like Michelangelo telling Leonardo to use more white in his painting. Which is silly because what the hell do turtles know about painting. Over all, I like this song. The mood is there as you intended, I believe.

Billy and the Psychotics - we bang on things and strum stuff, then form our mouths in shapes to string together phonemes. It's fun! Image

The Chadderandom Abyss - Who says there is only one way to skin a cat? I've never believed in following rules by the man! I ain't part of the f**king system, man. I throw shit on the ground! When I hear your music, it always reminds me of that youtube guy named shreds, but without video, lol.

glennny - I like that you started doing solo stuff again. It gives one more genre comeback to the community. I like your Zappa'esque stuff a lot. I like this song and the "individual" tracks. The combined mix needs some ear training, but it's all there, so who am I to decide? The vocals are only lacking practice, but with daily crooning you can smooth them out in no time. Also, now that you are taking the bull by the horns, you will step by step move from one plateau to the next and know what you need when you get there. I speak from experience because that's where I'm at. Keep it up, man. Good song.

The HATE Noise - I like simplistic instrumentation and I love when the guitar riff takes on a new life when the bass comes in. It's like ear magic and I do it often because it's a cool illusion. The song is cool and has that same energy and crowd chant of the song Tongue Tied by Group Love. Because of that, it's a song that lifts the spirit, and I like that. I've seen your lo-fi love and I'm all for it. My garage days are behind me but never forgotten. It was re-opened when I saw Sex Bob Omb in Scott Pilgrim and it brought back great memories. Good song, keep'um coming.

Hoglen & Wages - Phil, I like your passion. Every time you come around you're more refined. The chord progression in parts makes me want to sing Lay Lady Lay, lol. I like it.

James Owens f. Tony Dunn - Ok, nice intro with the horns, cool. Hey, you sound like David Bowie a bit, cool! This is a good song, and has a great groove. If I had to give one bit of advice, it would be to get the vocal ambiance matching the music to get them on the same stage. But that's about it. Good song.

The Lip - Percussions and a Hammond, how can it be anything but cool? Ok, vocal distortion for the raw edgy drive. I get the distorted vocals, but I'd like to hear them too. It goes on a bit for having little change, but a pretty cool song for your intended audience.

Paco del Stinko - Charlie first thing first. I haven't reviewed much, but over the past couple months I've noticed a complete different mixing and production style. One of those plateaus we all move up step by step. The stereo field has opened up a lot and you're using your left and right fields much more interestingly. Ok, the song. I really like your cross over chorus vocals. I'm surprised that you didn't pan each off left and right with your new found pan knobs, lol But cool sing-a-longy style sells it. The song is good, I like it.

Schizophonics - How do I review a song like this when it's just sequenced sample? Give me a second, I can find the good in everything, still listening. The words sound serious! You are mad at someone, right? Which makes sense in a song about blame. OH, it has a good beat? Yes, a good beat! I like it. For this genre, serious lyrics and a good beat make this a good song.

Sell Crazy - Ok, I like this right out of the gate. It's rock! The vocals sound a bit on your tippy toes, but you're holding it great so far. I like the drum tom break part and the lower register backup vox with the higher, cool. Nice change ups to keep the song out of samey land. Cool come back around outro. Cool. Good song.

Sober - Food glorious foooood, lol. This is great! I'm not sure what is played or sampled, not that it matters, but I hate to tell a person I love how they play the double bass and they get a sad face as they read because they didn't, so I try to focus on the song in general as much as I can. But I do know you play guitar, so I'll pay attention to that and the vocals. First off, your vocals are always superb and well recorded. The guitar has a nice groove and the solo is shweet. The double played panned solo would be tighter if single tracked (played once) up the center with a wide chorus, but I'm not the producer on this one, so who the fuck am I to make suggestions? But I do like it on the rhythm guitar. I'm not going to lie, I kept waiting for the Richard Cheese innuendos to start any second, but it stayed as clean as a sober Irishman, lol. I like it. Well done.

State Shirt - You always make cool music with a ton of cool elements carefully placed like landmines for the ears. This fills the stereo field really well, almost too much at times. Very cool groove. If I had to say anything, it would be to make the bottom punch and bump more defined. But other than that, I like it.

The Wankers - I personally think ALL barbershop should be about penises, vaginas and boobs. But I'm not the king of earth...yet! But you did the vocals pretty damn good. Nice harmonies. Keep on Image

WreckdoM - I love funny list songs. Is that Cloris Leachman? lol. How do you decide on your background music? So random, yet arranged. I've always said you are the Dr Demento house band and this fits the bill. I like it!

AntBut - Tuneful, with a gentle mellow quality. The arrangement shows a lot of thought. The guitar(ish thing) and piano weave together nicely, especially in the instrumental portion, where a nicely crafted synth sound really brings it together. The subdued strings often add richness, but when they emerge as rhythmic accents they distract. The brass punctuations seem outside the sonic space. You have a good voice that suits this song. The ending has some nice moves, but maybe a few more than strictly necessary.

Berkeley Social Scene - Interesting contrast between the verse and chorus, like an abrupt awakening. The singing in the chorus strikes some artfully tense notes. Refreshing bridge. Apart from the chorus, the song seems to lack focus. Maybe more dynamic contrast?

Billy and the Psychotics -- Good production, vibrant vocals. The tangled guitar gives the verse excitement. The serpentine bass in the chorus is most excellent. The chorus is good, not quite a hook. They say rising tones help a hook. In this case it would add contrary motion, which is also a theoretically good thing. A solid entry and a sure vote-getter.

The Chadderandom Abyss - Charmingly dissolute. Whenever I hear something like this on Song Fight, I expect and dread that it will last at least five minutes, because that just seems to go with the attitude, so thanks for keeping it short. At this length, and with the distinct phases, it's actually pretty OK.

glennny - The Latin rhythm is refreshing, we don't hear that often. The different sections are all interesting and distinct, and go together well. Colourful, intricate instrumentation, if a little loose rhythmically here and there; nice acoustic bass sound.

The HATE Noise - This song grows very well, with the unexpected harmonic setting at 00:18 and then the abrupt intensity at 00:36. Very inventive and interesting, always well-paced. Could be a vote.

Hoglen & Wages - The horns and slightly rough backing vocals give this an appealing sound. The occasional jumps to unexpected chords keep things fresh. The song runs a little long and the ending could be tightened up.

James Owens f. Tony Dunn - That's Tony on the sax. He also volunteered the backing vocals at 1:08, which makes him responsible for all the good parts. I recorded everything in the wrong key for my voice, as some have observed; you'd think I'd learn.

The Lip - Eccentric combinations of sounds and rhythms. Well-timed, striking textural changes. The distorted vocals add the right colouration, but they're pretty hard to make out, not that I usually register lyrics anyway. Nice variant around 3:41. I trust the ensuing cave of horrors has something to do with the lyrics.

Paco del Stinko - Catchy rhythm, tight presentation. Nice to hear a different kind of guitar solo, you do it well. Well put together, the right length. Listening to this makes me smile for some reason.

Schizophonics - The backing music successfully evokes the simple power and drama one sometimes finds in the genre. At the start, the vocal rhythms feel a little hesitant for what they need to do, but they grow on me. The warm, natural intonations introduced at 1:43 bring in a vulnerability that seems out of place for the inexorable advance that this type of music seems designed to suggest. The closing section doesn't add a lot, so the fade could be sooner. For what I know about the style, which is not much, this entry seems to be doing a good job overall.

Sell Crazy - Nice grunge-pop feel, with an unusually sweet vocal sound. Somewhere in the Kinks - Ramones continuum, but with a truly distinctive quality. Where I notice the lyrics, they are endearingly frank. Nice rhythmic variants on "You don't care." After about 1:50 you seem to be padding for extra time. It works for a bit, but after 2:02 I'd prefer a frantic solo and a fast wrap-up.

Sober - Good tune, strong performance, quality recording. The soft strumming and brushes go together naturally for this more or less traditional sound. The vocals are similarly upbeat and they are performed well, but perhaps because of their low register or their solidity and edge they feel a bit strident in the context. The line "I blame you entirely" starts to wear out its welcome near the end.

State Shirt - Overwhelming; I have to turn down the volume. The washes of echo and long soaring pure tones are sensually beautiful, and the thick urgent bass adds drive. The harsh percussive passages provide welcome contrast. It is as if one dreamed intensely, but on waking had only the vague sense that something had happened.

The Wankers - Excellent barbershop harmonies, clever lyrics. It sounds terribly ragged and reckless, but that works. Mind you, it might work as well or better if it were awesomely tight. Still, how could anyone not like this? The arrangement shows care and skill, and it might earn a vote.

WreckdoM - I like the playfulness. The music is kind of "phoned in," if you know what I mean; you could have done any random thing, it hardly matters. The performance is campy, which has its risks. But in the end this entry is entertaining.
