OK, I'll go first since I've been gone awhile. These were written based on one listen each.

Grilton’s Castle - I want to like this - but I actually don’t really get the lyrics, partly I can’t make out the words and I guess I am missing why the person needs directions for each of these journeys. Also, I am feeling slightly yelled at. There is a catchiness, but it doesn’t quite catch.

glennny - Love the groove - like the overall lyrical approach - fun songs about banal topics - reminds me a little of Geggy Tah in a good way. Super fun guitar interplay! Drums are adding a lot here, too - who did that for you? or is it electronic? I do feel like it is a bit too long for what it is - but I like the ending.

Gregg Boethin - Nice sounding track. Something about the lyrics feels a bit image thick to me, although I’m sure upon repeated listens it would clarify. My main complaint is that the arrangement is so steady throughout, and the guitar seems busy and a little distracting. I think I would drop out the electric licks for the first verse at least and bring it in later to add color - harmonies could also beef up the arrangement a bit - but overall a pretty nice song.

The Wankers - yeah - eponymous. There is an late 80s indy vibe to this that I love. Should have ended after the first two verses, I think. and I guess I’m not all intot he porn angle - you could have broadened it to beer and stuff and had a more three dimensional portrait of your protagonist.

DJ Ranger Den - I didn’t get it. Not sure what else I should say. If I had “got it” I mihgt have a totally different feel.

BSS - I love the patience this track has. I also love how you broke the line across the verse into the chorus. The major seven or whatever you land on on the word “wall” is a little jarring the first time, but lays very nicely as the song plays out. Good guitar and arrangement work - another nice BSS tune.

Kasper - wow - we’re all coming out of the woodwork this week. Great track -really focussed -sounds like a great follow through on a vision. If I had one comlaint it would be that I’m not sure about the actual use of the title line - but that would be quibbling in an already symbolic song.

The Lookouts - The lyrics just feel very cliche to me. And I don’t really get how the map gives you places to call. The spoken word part really drags this down for me.

Odilon Green - I could not engage in the lyrics here - I found this track quite boring. - sorry.

Foobar - There are a few nice things here - some of the lyrical stuff, especially in the first verse are interesting - the chorus plods a little bit to me, but I think there is a nugget underlying this if it had been developed a little different.

Chadderandom abbys - There are some things I like about ht e instrumental backing track texture - I wish it sounded like there was a relationship between that and the vocals. Also I really couldn’t make out any of the words, so it was hard for me to assess the overall meaning of the piece.

[edit]I accidentally missed chocolate chip cookies the first time around. Pretty well done little piece, but I don't really think of it as a "song" per se. You did a nice job with the build - good little exercise, but the words might as well have been "two spades and three hearts," if you know what I mean.

I will for sure vote for Kasper. Other likely votes are Glennny, BSS, and Gregg. I am also likely to vote for me, because I like my song :-)

Listed in a particular order! Top Three Get Votes/Green Faces:

:mrgreen: Berkeley Social Scene: I dig the laid back open sound that starts the song off. Has a Weezer-esque vibe. Vocals could be stronger, but they aren't too bad and have some personality to them. They're probably OK for this style. Pretty decent melody but it doesn't quite pull me in as much as I would like. Not a bad solo ... interesting choice mixing the lead guitar to the right ... not sure about that (or the synth sounds which seem a bit thin) ... This is a good song/production.

:mrgreen: Kasper: Nice. My favorite section of the song starts at 0:25 seconds in (again at 1:09 & 2:13) that bit is real nice. The guitar leads are groovy, they remind me of Crosby, Stills, & Nash.

:mrgreen: Ross Durand: I like the percussion (although it may be a bit too loose?) ... the lyrics draw me in and are probably the best at actually tying the title in (it doesn't hurt that I'm quite anti-NRA myself) The guitar and vocals are solid if not overly thrilling.

Gregg Boethin: Overlooking my own personal distaste for country flavored tunes, this is pretty good. I think the vocals could stand-out in the track a bit more, guitars are taking up a lot of space. The panning around on the lead guitar is a bit weird/distracting with this type of track.

Glennny: This is good except I find the instrumental track too busy and the vocals a bit weak/thin. The instrumental breaks are nice if maybe a bit too random sounding at times (and I am a fan of Beck...) I do find that the song grows on me a bit as I listen which is a good sign as I usually find Song Fight songs wearing thin as they play on. But still I have to say it does seem too long.

The Lookouts: Reminds me of late '80s Flaming Lips, but unfortunately I'm more of a fan of 'late 90s Flaming Lips. Just a bit too messy for me ... I mean it's not bad and there's a lot of personality in the track but I find the overall effect a bit abrasive (the guitars are all a bit brittle sounding.) The song needs more low end/warmth.

Odilon Green: Sounds pretty good and the robot voice isn't too bad... but there's nothing that's really hooking me so that I want to really go into this world. The production is good but none of the musical elements seem interesting enough to really pull me in.

DJ Ranger Den: Pretty creepy, could possibly be on a soundtrack to a horror movie. I dig the idea and the sounds but I am feeling myself craving a bit more structure within the madness ... something to hold onto.

Grilton's Castle: OK but unremarkable for this style. I do like that it's short!

Foobar: I have a hard time getting past the generic midi sounding backing track and the badly recorded vocals, but that's production stuff... what about the song itself? I'm not a fan of this style of instrumentation (even if played on real instruments) but there seems to be some decent ideas in the vocal melody and lyrics. At it's best, it vaguely reminds me of Leonard Cohen.

The Wankers: You guys sound like you have a lot of fun recording your stuff. The intro bit is a bit long but kind of amusing. The song itself is kind of good but really sloppy.

Chadderandom: Too cacophonous to get into. I think... if you really want to present this sort of experience to someone, it's best to slide them into it. You got to hook their interest first, right?

~~~
The Chocolate Chips: This is my first Song Fight entry that I wouldn't really classify as a song (no real melody and no lyrics beyond the title.) It's a bit of an experiment with the whole tone scale. The idea is that it's slowly building up within this back and forth thing ... I'm hoping there's some seeds in this idea that are worth more fully exploring later, but more likely it's a one off failed experiment.
Hey Mr. chips - after reading your comments on your own track I scanned up to see what I had said about it and discovered I had not reviewed it. Total mistake, not an intentional omission. Heading out for errands, butnI'll fix that later.
Cool! No biggie - Like I said, it's not really much of a song in the traditional sense.
Berkeley Social Scene
We barely made it this week. Sam and I came up with most of this song, needing Glen's help to finish all the solos and vocals. I'm glad everything came together as well as it did.
The Chadderandom Abyss
Whoah, this song starts off crazy and doesn't let up. It is hard to hear the vocals, so this comes across more as a tape collage than a song.
The Chocolate Chips
Right away I like the interplay between the bass and guitars. Vocal harmonies are interesting.
DJ Ranger Den
Wow, no one told me it was experimental soundscape week. It feels like there is a song trying to break through here, but isn't successful.
Foobar
I'm enjoying this simple GnP song. Do I hear drums faintly in the background? I feel like this is just a little too loose to be really good. Overall, I like it. They lyrics are interesting and piano is good. Maybe it also needs a stronger melody or vocal performance. Seems to need an actual ending. Keep writing!
glennny
Love the Paul's Boutique cowbell! Lots of interesting parts that flow pretty well from one to the next. I think song could also use a better ending. It just seems to cut off.
Gregg Boethin
This sounds pretty good. I like the lead guitar work and the drums/bass are good too. Probably would sound even better with some high harmony vocals on the chorus. Well done.
Grilton's Castle
Great energy. Reminds me a bit of 15-16 Puzzle. It was a little hard to understand your lyrics and I'm not sure from where to where you were saying.
Kasper
Is it the guitar tone that makes this sound like a dated recording? Sounds a little 80s or 90s, I can't quite figure it out. Like a 90s song recorded in the 80s... So I like the groove of it.
The Lookouts
Again another pretty good song. Lots of good ideas, but a little rough. Not sure you need that shaker going through the entire song. Maybe just the guitars would have been enough. You might also look into some kind of drum VSTi, unless you are totally analog or something. I like the spoken word part. Very cool.
Odilon Green
Domo Arigato Mr. Roboto. I'm not sure how I feel about the robot voice. Should you just rap instead? Should you have more of a melody instead of the monotone robot voice? I dunno... the rest of the instruments sound good.
Ross Durand
This is a pretty upbeat song for such serious lyrics. Seems like you run out of breath trying to cram in too many lyrics or play the song too fast. Bongos are a fun touch. Did you get them for the holidays?
The Wankers
I don't really appreciate the quiet fake song at the beginning. The second song is pretty good though. I like the group vocals on the chorus but the out of tuneness of it, which seems on purpose, is hard to listen to.
I am not really sure what I was trying to do. Everyone's reviews have been very kind. I was experimenting with several concepts at the same time while there were visiting children who wanted to be part of my Idea. So I took the Swishy Stuff* out of the poem I'd written and let that happen. In the beginning, it was structured with more lyrics and a patterned piano part. The sing-song-y hook still began the song, but a capella and then everything was meant to layer in. I do not think my brother thought it was a song, and a few family members looked at me like I was rather odd - though they really should know by now, I would think, that almost anything could go on in this room.
*swishy stuff means that yes, the lyrics were more vroom-vroom before I dropped them and let my niece participate Improvasatorily. It's good that I didn't start the year off exhaling into the microphone. it was nice to do something off-path and into the forest quite a bit.
Berkeley Social Scene
sounds a little out of tune, and I'm afraid a bit boring. improved with the additional synths after the solo, but not for me.
The Chadderandom Abyss
Very small parts remind me of Ramshackle Glory, but not good. Like that you're trying something different but it isn't really working.
The Chocolate Chips
Liked the mysterious vibe to the song, belongs in a depressing murder mysery. but again just not quite doing it for me, just nothing that interesting.
DJ Ranger Den
Good god, i know I've been off a bit, but when did songfight turn into "the latest in college art film ambient sountrack fight - seemed amazing when we were high as hell".
Again, no, like your doing something different but theres no substance and it's toooo long.
Foobar
well you win most typically song like song so far. and its a miserable song with a happy melody, like the idea. vocals are a little poor, but I'm kinda into it. sir, you win a vote.
glennny
not enjoying this I'm afraid. Sounds a bit too much like a generic 'pick the parts out of garageband' songs my friends like to show me they proudly created in 36 minutes. not saying it is, just not working for me. I also have just no idea what the vocals are about, they disappear in a blur into the instruments. Do quite like the bridge/solo acoustic guitar parts, and some of the guitar layering is nice.
Gregg Boethin
well, it's alright. i just have almost no comments, very generic sounding, nothing standing out. all i can think of is the line dancing scene in League of Gentlemen. man I love that show.
Grilton's Castle
I kinda like it, it's quirky, but the lyrics are hugely generic, that offtime bongo sounding thing won you a vote though sir.
Kasper
I was with you until the boring electric guitar riffs came in at around 47secs. sounds too 90s rock ballad now.
The Lookouts
over a minute in and I feel like I'm waiting for the intro to finish still. just over half way now. almost sounding like Daniel Johnstone, but you can't write songs like ole Danny boy.
Odilon Green
I was really close to really liking this. Not sure why. I got even closer to voting for it but it's just a bit too long, good effort though.
Ross Durand
Really liked it to start with. Then got a bit annoyed with the.. i dunno, relevance and bandwagon-ness of the song. but then, harmonica solo, vote.
The Wankers
Intro was too long. Song was alright, just sounded really unenthusiastic. almost voted for the rap type breakdown towards the end, but then it went on for the rest of my life.
so there we go, am hoping to make a thoroughly disappointing and poor return to songfight, but time is kicking my ass at the moment! anyway, well done everyone, you are all gentle(wo)men and scholars and I applaud you.
In an attempt to get more fights reviewed, I'm going to go the cheap route of only reviewing songs I have something to say about. So if you're not in here it's not because I liked your song, or because I didn't like it, it's just that you didn't get my attention. Most unreviewed songs are perfectly fine but unremarkable. If you aren't reviewed here it's because I didn't have anything to say really. But I heard everything twice, including the unreviewed songs.
Chadderandom Abyss
Probably seems strange to hear this, but the only thing really problematic with this is the vocals. If I heard this without the vocals I would think it was frankly great. Reminded of Renaldo and the Loaf. The vocals make the instrumentals work less well, because it lends the whole thing an air of goofing off.
Chocolate Chips
I like this. It doesn't go far anough by a long shot, but what's here is terrific.
DJ Ranger Den
I lose interest halfway through when I can't get sense of a shape or anything. It doesn't go anywhere, and if I didn't know you better I'd say you were just playing around
Glennny
This is delightfully strange. It's not terrific, because the vocals don't have enough energy or character, but I like it when lots of different things are happening but they all seem part of the whole
Ross Durand
Have you seen this: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=b47_1357 ... comments=1
Wankers
When this started I was positive it was going to suck. I was very surprised. You're hiding behind the wanker personas, but I can tell you have some chops. A rare instance where the lousy vocals come across as a feature. Feels like true rock and roll. This song made me go back and hear your other entries. And well, they weren't that great. But I like this one a whole lot.
Berkeley Social Scene
+ like the way the guitar arpeggiation plays in
+ nice solo work
- felt the outtro piano chord held unusually long
- doubled vocals or vocal effect was a little distracting. I wonder if a cleaner vocal effect would have sounded better?
The Chadderandom Abyss
- With "noise" tracks like this, I can't ever tell if this is a legitimate attempt at art, or a sonic troll.
The Chocolate Chips
+ i like the dirty synth tone
+ i like the guitar riff over the synth
- just repeats the title over and over
DJ Ranger Den
-/+ part horror movie soundtrack, part kid banging on piano? there are parts interspersed through this that are cool, and others that sound like someone banging randomly on the keys.
- had a hard time listening all the way through, but I didn't spot much in the way of lyrics referring to the title
Foobar
+ i enjoyed this track, nice arrangement, nice piano riffs, lead bits, good lyrics
- there was some clipping maybe on the vocal, plus an effect or EQ setting that made it sound a little hollow
glennny
+ love the whole groove on this, reminds me a bit of old school Boltoph from back in the day, tight production
? not sure about the weird Run DMC Peter Piper breakdown in the middle
- wish you'd put the lyrics up on the forum, found some of them hard to understand
- ending seemed.. i'm not sure how to explain it, forced maybe? I didn't expect the bass to be the last thing I heard.
vote
Gregg Boethin
+/- very straightforward creedence-style rock
- could have used some instrumental breaks, more lead guitar/solos maybe. I was expecting some big slide guitar solo towards the end
Grilton's Castle
- i hoped that the bass drum in the very beginning wasn't going to continue in that same pattern the whole song, I was glad when the percussion sorted itself out. tempo was pretty loose throughout, which I found a little distracting
The Lookouts
+ love the arrangement/progression
- the doubled vocal sounds muddy and distracting in places
- the shaker seems to have trouble finding the beat when it starts, but i like it as the sole percussion
+ love the acoustic/clean breakdown during the spoken part, very nice job
vote
Odilon Green
+ subbass!
+/- wish you'd gone more full on with multipart/polyphonic vocoders instead of the straight drone
- at 4:00 there's not enough variation in the riffs to support a track this long
- with all that subbass I was expecting a monster wub wub breakdown someplace...
Ross Durand
+ it's clear you're passionate about this issue, and you put a lot of emotion into the song
+ i like how you used the title in the song
+/- went back and forth on this, it's a great interpretation of the title, and presented in typical Ross quality, but I found the message a little preachy and over the top; there's some political bias on my part, but I don't think it's fair to let my feelings on the topic cloud the overall vote-worthiness of the song
vote
The Wankers
- could have done without the 50 seconds of you talking to your cat
+ once the song finally shows up, the music is cool, nice and driving
+ funny lyrics, and I like the raucous out of tune drunken chorus singers. it sets the tone for the song very well
+ nice flow in the rap section
vote, mostly because it made me laugh
Thanks for the reviews guys, sorry I didn't post my lyrics until just now. They were never written or typed until just now. I hope to get some reviews done soon. If I don't get to it, Ross has my favorite of the week! I predict he'll take the win too. Good eclectic fight everyone! I never though Chocolate Chips would be bringing the King Crimson to the fight.
Hopefully I'll have more time later, I'm busy fighting Caravan Ray and Frankie Big Face at Song Pop.
cheers!
Speaking of community re-invigoration, the IRC channel is still around, although it's mostly just me and Irwin these days, and usually at odd hours. I can't find the link to the how-to instructions, but it's #SongFight! on irc.euirc.net.
I'm so grateful for all of the comments so far. I'm completely new at this- this is my very first time sharing music with anyone else, let alone the whole internet. Thanks to everyone who's chimed in. I have a lot of things to work on for next time, especially around recording vocals, which clearly sucked on this track. I'll also try and find something less generic for rhythm, too. I honestly didn't expect to get any votes at all, so I'm pretty psyched.
The Chocolate Chips
Sinister groove to start, definitely like the mood that's set. Hard to understand the vocals. Song ended just when I thought it'd get started.
Berkeley Social Scene
Liked the guitar riff, thought it worked well with the other instruments. Liked the guitar solo & outtro but not the "space boing" synth. I liked the mix on my ipod headphones, but played through monitors I found the bass too heavy and had to turn it down. In terms of the song itself, found the chorus catchy but was not really sure what the song was about in the end. Big thumbs up overall.
The Chadderandom Abyss
Ouch. Dystopian and hard to listen to. I tried to get through the whole track but just could not.
Gregg Boethin
I listened to this when right the contest was first posted, and was immediately intimidated. I like this track a lot, and it's catchy and memorable several days later. I enjoy humming the chorus in the shower. especially like the chord change on "evening" to "darkness." Perfect length, too. My favorite by far.
DJ Ranger Den
You're creeping me out man. How am I supposed to sleep after listening to this?
glennny
Cowbell = excellent. Overall really like the rhythm and guitar. I find the vocals a little too sour for me to enjoy. Could not really focus on the lyrics. Also felt it was a bit too long. By the time the guitar solo kicks in around 2:45, I was longing for something more directly in key. But definitely a distinctive sound overall.
Grilton's Castle
I was laughing through this one. Something about "Munsie" was just funny. But I absolutely love the nerdy Azeroth references. Not a big fan of the "map for your wall" part of the chorus, though. Overall, funny and silly, made me smile.
Ross Durand
I liked this a lot, and obviously topical. Agree with the other comments about running out of breath. I actually found myself feeling short of breath a little while listening, which actually is kind of a cool effect. Harmonica solo = win. I think this one could even be another verse longer, I was right with you when the track ended. A real pleasure to listen to. Given current events, I think this could do well as a political YouTube music video.
Kasper
Another one I found intimidatingly professional, especially early in the track. "follow with the flow" & "feelings in a jar" chords definitely very 90's. And then the bass/guitar read Police to me. Did not find the guitar solo had as much energy as I expected. I'm not one to talk, since I can't sing to save my life, but I thought the vocal tone strayed from pitch over the course of the track. I liked the ending, although not a fan of that piano sample. Overall, I liked this one but did not find it as memorable as I thought I would at the beginning.
The Lookouts
Liking the stereo interactions on the guitars. Unlike the other commenter, I like the shakers. The chorus is my favorite part of this song, verses will a little slow for me. Spoken word part is just brilliant, and I'm not even sure why. Just fits and the kayak details made me smile.
The Wankers
Don't get the weird pulp fiction-esque dialog at the beginning. Liking the energy right at the start of the music. Agree with others on the out-of-tune chorus, not my favorite but I think I get the vibe you're going for. Laughed at the apple maps joke, I admit it. Other than that, not really sure what's going on lyrically. Chorus is growing on me as I listen. the rapping part has great energy, if I mostly ignore the lyrics.
Odilon Green
Liked the 8-bit vibe. Could see this (sans vocals) as a great video game level track. I wanted to like the robot voice, but it just grated on me. Bass was too loud for me when played through monitors, although sounded good on the iphone headphones. I liked the "built for a different age" part of the lyrics. There was a little double-time motif in the solo that I found especially charming. I think there may have been one or two too many choruses for my taste. All that said, I found the song moving by the end. Something about that sad robot being washed away in the outro got to me.
---
Anyway, I had more fun doing this than I've had in ages, so thanks for giving me such a warm welcome into the community (if it needs re-invigorating, that's news to me). If anyone ever wants to collaborate on a track, drop me a line. Thanks everyone!
The last fight we were in, I Blame You Entirely, had a lot of good entries. I kind of feel this one is more mediocre, although it does have a few gems.
Berkeley Social Scene
Good production on this... A few times the vocals kind of stretch up to note. The song is solid in my opinion, but it leaves other parts of me the opposite... Just not into it so much, but it’s a good entry.
The Chadderandom Abyss
This is great. I’ll put this on repeat for the girls trapped in my basement, thanks.
The Chocolate Chips
I hope you give out cookies at your shows, and none of that store bought stuff either. I’m listening to the stream, and after the previous disaster, this is kinda quiet... Something like this you kinda want to fill the listener’s head with... so I recommend boosting it. I like that it’s kinda dark and droning on though... however it doesn’t quite make the wank bank, more could have been done with it.
DJ Ranger Den
This scared me. Did you play this back for those children to make them cry?
Foobar
“this is my very first time sharing music with anyone else” well that’s an automatic wank right there. Virgins are hot. Welcome to songfight, and all that, now let me tear apart your song. Just kidding, it’s not so bad, I like how it changes up and your melodies. The classical guitar is obviously MIDI, but maybe it’s what you’re going for. Also the singing could be improved a bit “hole through the whole of Tennessee” part is a little awkward, and the drums could be louder. Otherwise I think it’s a pretty solid entry.
glennny
To be honest I’m having a little trouble with this one. There’s good musicianship here, but I’m having a little trouble following the song. I guess verse doesn’t quite work for me. Are those percussion loops, sometimes I think yes, others no. Maybe there’s too much going on... I don’t know... Maybe I’m just being picky this time around... It’s performed well, but like the other entries so far, not really my thing. It’s not happening, so I’ll just roll over and go to sleep...
Gregg Boethin
Ain’t nothin’ wrong with a little soul searchin’ country music. And you pulled it off (pun intended) well! I think you are on the mark for what you’re going for and that’s worth a wank, no? It could use a little more polish in spots, but it’s good.
Grilton's Castle
WoW! I’d probably need directions in Azeroth too, it’s been many years. I’m guessing this is just a live recording since it fell apart at the end and you just said fuck it and kept going... The song is catchy, could use a little more comedy... Well there’s one thing I don’t need directions for... and this song makes me want to do that!
Kasper
Singer 1, your first line started out great but then it lost just a little energy, you have a real good voice, just keep up your original projection (don’t take my advice, I can’t sing at all). Overall it’s a good song, guys... good job. A little sad, and I’d be crying if I weren’t wankin’
The Lookouts
This isn’t bad, a few out of tune vocals, though. Personally I’d like to hear more percussion, probably a kit. Not into the whole talking part, sorry.
Odilon Green
The robot voice is a plus for sure, but you can play other notes on your vocoder. I really like this, I just wish there was a melody to it, I’d probably be wanking.
Ross Durand
Right on Ross! By far the best entry* in this fight! Love the message, lyrics aren’t forced and flow perfectly. I’m sorry I don’t have any constructive criticism or any suggestions, but I just can’t think of any. I hope everyone else is wanking as much as I am over this one! It’s the only kind of shooting I approve of!
The Wankers
As part of my legal obligations, I’d like to say this is the best song ever. Aside from that, maybe I can help shed some light on the mysterious wankers that all the kids are listening to today. Occasionally there are parties, who ever is at these parties is welcome to participate in our drunken songfighting. Then those jerks expect me to edit and mix it, or as they say “make it sound good!” and so I spend many hours editing, mixing, and turd polishing all while they take all the credit and get all the women and all the yen! I’d like to take this moment to apologize for the 48 second introduction of this song, but let me explain what it is. One of our co-conspirators passed out as the song was being written, we were able to stretch a mic over to him to record his snoring while our unnamed rapper interviewed him. You might recognize that snoring as the lead vocals from our first entry, Should Be Fun, but likely you don’t.
Some of you have mentioned that the wanking thing is getting old... well we’ll stop writing about wanking when you actually stop wanking. Fair enough, no? Simple as that, wanking never dies. You can’t kill rock and roll, and you can’t kill wanking.
